OOC: I like the title idea. Maybe I'll do it too... I used this title because if you look carefully there's a Lord of the Rings reference there, and as I was just reading part of that book today, it was fresh in my mind I guess...

Ari, on the other hand, preferred to journey alone, as she wasn't much of a social person. Yet, she kept looking around nervously at the other trainers in the program. A tan boy with spiky hair, wearing a hoodie and shorts. A classy-looking girl with glasses and hair in an elaborate bun, wearing a dress and holding a book. A brown-haired boy wearing another hoodie (though short-sleeved) and an otherwise blue and silver outfit. A preppy-looking girl with blond hair, who had already found a boy to talk to. And a tall boy with spiky blue hair and a pair of headphones around his neck. Ari took a long look, frowning a slight bit at the two girls, because she had encountered several rich and preppy and blond and classy girls who turned out to be prissy and stuck-up. She also had doubts about tan boys, having encountered a few of them in school who turned out to be goofballs. Who knows, maybe these people were actually very interesting, but Ari still avoided their gazes generally. However, her eyes passed over the blue-haired boy a few times, and she noticed that he had a Bulbasaur with him. One time when she liiked she saw his eyes, which seemed to sparkle like crystals.
But Ari quickly drew her gaze back to Maverick, who was sitting against a tree and looked to be lost in thought. Apparently the glee of the music she had showed him on the boat had faded.
"Hmm, something bothering you?" Ari asked him, kneeling down beside him.
"Treecko treecko," Maverick replied without looking at her. Of course she could not understand what he was saying. But after a while she thought she had a guess...
"Has it anything to do with that battle from yesterday?"
Maverick nodded.
"You're a bit upset about losing that battle, aren't you?"
Maverick began to nod, but then shook his head a few times. Then he nodded slowly, then bowed his head a bit--though he didn't look too dismayed.
"Treeecko treecko ko." Maverick then held up the stick he was holding as if to examine it. He stroked the stick with his other hand, contemplating it a bit. Then he threw it upwards and it flipped a few times. At once he stood up and jumped clear over Ari's head, caught the stick, and landed in an elegant fashion, moving the stick to the side.
"It's as if you treat that stick as a weapon or something," Ari commented.
"Tree!" Maverick gazed in her direction and gave her a disapproving look.
"What? It's not a weapon?"
"Tree." Maverick shook his head, then twirled the stick around like a baton. "Tree."
"It's... not a stick?" Ari guessed again.
Maverick nodded.
Ari wanted to laugh and say, "Then what is it, a baton?" but she didn't, because she didn't want to insult him.
"Tree tree treecko..." Maverick muttered, though a bit more to himself. He looked up at the canopy of the trees and lay the stick on his lap.
It's not just a stick, it's my... Maverick thought. I'm still not sure what to call it, my soul, my own, my precious... and I am not about to part with it. I feel as if it as moreso a part of me than my own heart is. I feel it shall assist me, like the staff of a mage, the sword of a warrior, the pendulum of a Hypno... Maybe it is, as Ari put it, my "weapon", even. All I know is that somehow it found its way to me, that there's something deeply special about it. I can't let such a treasure, such an appendage, part with me.
"Maverick?" Ari called, calling the Treecko to her attention. "You know what I think might help?"
The Treecko listened intently.
"I think, once we set off on our journey, we should do a bit of training--you know, to practise your attacks and such, maybe even learn new ones like Absorb. If you lose a battle, that's usually a good thing to do. You do like to battle, right?"
"Tree-ko," Maverick answered as he stood up, swinging his stick back and forth like a sword, then flipping it in his hand once again.
It was then that Ari noticed that she was right near where the blue-haired boy and the couple (so she initially thought) were standing (they were on opposite sides of her a short distance away); she wondered if they had seen her Treecko's behaviour. She kept looking from left to right, unsure of who to talk to, if anyone.
