I agree with the Pidgey, and have it evolve into Pidgeot. Not because Ash has/had one, but because Pidgeot is one of the more majestic-looking bird pokemon and seems like one that'd suit May.

Either that or she catches Articuno while Noland is asleep >.>

Or maybe catch an Oddish and evolve it into Bellossom...

Remember that may is a coordinator so the pokemon must suit to the contest. A normal pokemon?type doesn't matter ,i mean she can use it for cute contest, beside i don't know another cute pokemon
