XD, I posted a simplified explaination a little bit back.

Well, the story behind that is kinda a yes, no answer.
In Movie 9 (not 8, because 8 is the Lucario movie) Manafi hatches and the first person it sees is May, and they develop a close bond because of that. But, at the end of movie 9, Manafi has to leave and they split off with Manafi going back to take care of the water Pokemon kingdom.

So technically Manafi belonged to May for a little while.

There was that random pirate guy who tried to steal Manafi. And the ranger I think wanted Manafi for himself too... Manafi was too rare and too special.
