It is clear to me, that Jiraiya is the strongest of the three, sanin's for the simple fact Orochimaru worked under pain, way under who went head to head with jiraiya.
If that's not enough do not forget Jiraiya's Sage Mode

Whatever happened to Gaara? I'm only up to about episode 37 on my DVD's at the moment, but on tv they're up to like the 100's and I haven't seen him lately...

He has been out of action for a longest time, but you will see him around Episodes 120ish in Naruto and in Shippuuden...I am not so sure. The latest was Episode 1-7 and 33...I think. But in the latest chapters in the manga...he is there. :3
