Gen one was the first time I made the choice, I choose Squirtle and I would choose him again if given the chance.

Interesting how it's a tie now, 9 votes each.

I was really young when I played Pokémon (I think I had Red first) but I remember not picking Bulbasaur XD I'm pretty sure I picked Squirtle, but these days I prefer Charmander because Charizard is one of my favourites XD

Oh, and yeah, Gen 1 was when I first chose one of these Pokémon.

Who did you choose the first time?
Tim: Squirtle. I was very young when I made the decision but when I saw that Bubble halved Geodude and Onix's HP at level 8, I forever fell in love with Squirtle and is always my choice in whatever version I play the Kanto adventure.

Who would you choose next time you get this choice?
Tim: Squirtle.

In which generation did you first encounter this decision? Gen I,III or IV?
Tim: Generation I in 1999.

Bulbasaur, all my friends had either Squirtle or Charmander. As I was a hipster back in the second grade, I picked the unused one.

Bulbasaur was my choice in LeafGreen, Squirtle in FireRed, and I can't remember who I chose when I played Blue for a short while. The first generation though was the only gen where I originally preferred the grass over water starter.
