Spoiler:
I received my first Pokemon from Professor Oak, a Vaporeon, which I named Tigris. My Rival also received his first Pokemon, a Nidoqueen
After receiving my Pokeballs, I encountered my first Pokemon on route 1 a Level 3 Tentacruel, unfortunately due to Tigris landing a critical hit, I was unable to capture it and had to continue on to the next route.
Then on route 22, I found a Level 4 Vileplume. After reducing its accuracy and weakening it, it became confused after a Petal Dance and knocked itself out, costing me yet another Pokemon.
Finally, on Route 2 I was able to capture my first Pokemon, a Level 3 Ditto. It put up quite the fight, so I'm really hoping it proves to be a valuable partner on my journey.
Thankfully, not too long after catching Riku I was able to encounter a level 6 Tangela in Viridian Forest. I had short work of it and Shrub was added to the team!
After a bit of leveling, and a few really close calls, we battled our way out of Viridian Forest and were prepared to face the Pewter City Gym Leader!
Brock was actually pretty tough, with a team of Nidoking and Pinsir, I actually came very close to losing both Riku and Tigris, while poor Shrub was unable to do much when it battled Pinsir. We've not obtained our first badge and, so far, we haven't lost a single member of the team! Now, we're off to Mt. Moon as we make our way to Cerulean City!

Spoiler:
We leave Pewter City and head east toward Mt. Moon, after battling a few trainers we finally came across a new patch of grass where we encountered a level 8 Persian. We captured the Persian after it broke
out of a few Pokeballs and Seven joined our merry band.
After making it into Mt. Moon, we encountered an Exeggutor, but sadly I ran out of Pokeballs before I was able to capture it, so I ended up having to knock it out. Leaving the team with no new addition for Mt. Moon.
Sadly, shortly after failing to catch Exeggutor, I encountered a trainer using a level 14 Hunter. Due to a combination of confusion and many of my Pokemon being unable to damage it, my team was wiped out.
