Here is where you can discuss the upper echelons of Trainer academia in "The School of Hard Knocks."

    My review to come forthwith.

Brock: She can violate my rights anytime

    o.O

This is an odd episode because it's the only one where Ash is attracted to a girl. The little boy uses an arcade style Game Boy XD The thing where the girl's talking to the boy at the end is soo cheesy, I can't rememeber what she says but you could seriously take the cheese off the screen...

That's not the only odd thing, as Levels were actually mentioned here, too. And Ash attracted to a girl? Get out of here. Heh.

Anyway, here's the episode comparison, full of paint edits, along other things: https://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/comparisons/kanto/ep009.html

And Dogasu does mention the cheesy line. Enjoy. More commentary later.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Yes the lines were cheesy, but it was interesting. We see how some trainer choose to enter league on book smarts, which is really cool. This episode also introduces the Generation I type and Level system from the games into the anime (and is quickly retconned out).

I like Gisselle. I think seeing a girl Ash is attracted to made this episode so much better. Out of any of Ash's one time rivals, she deserved to come back. I would love to see her get her butt kicked at the Indigo League to a trainer who earned their badges.

For once I approve of the Paint Edits. They did a good job with everything (except turning the tea cup into the prune juice can).

    Overall a 4.5/5

I was so busy complaining I forgot to mention how much I liked the episode XD Yeah, it was cool, and I liked the battle between him and Ash, Pikachu and Cubone I mean, I thought it was funny how Giselle kept laughing at Ash and how Ash kept going on about his 2 badges (there was a video on YouTube called "ASH HAS 2 BADGES!!11" which got taken down. It's a shame because it was so funny "Pikachu, 2 badges attack!") Haha, I've gone off the point...

Same goes for Jessie and James and their past connection to each other. At the time, I had wondered, "had they met prior to being with Team Rocket?" Of course, that got retconned out, in time. I hate retcons, so much.

Speaking of whom, James was also attracted to Giselle, isn't that weird? Haha. Considering the later gay arguments or the Rocketshipper ones lobbed about, I was surprised at his reaction here. Especially, at the age difference. Heh.

The weirdest part in the episode is how Giselle actually has a surname (in the Japanese version). From Dogasu:

"Yuutou Seiyo..."Yuutou" is her last name), and the katakana on the left is Jun's name. Why Seiyo is one of the only people in the entire series who gets a last name and kanji is a mystery."

That's the one thing that has truly bugged me about this franchise -- why no surnames. Anime is usually good about that, yet not here. Weird, and frustrating.

Jessie and James meeting at Pokemon Tech... "We frolicked the night away!" OMG, this episode is soooo laced with dirty undertones like that. Between that and Brock's "She can violate my rights" speech, this had to be the shippingest episode ever.

I think they gave her a last name because she a higher up in the school. EVERYONE knows her full name. To be honest why isn't any of the main cast given one. Satoshi doesnt have one, Takeshi doesnt have one, Kasumi doent have one, Kenji doesnt have one. Only Shigeru and his grandpa.

The first episode oef the show that I actually liked. It was nice seeing Ash aknowledge a girl. The reason they mention levels is probably for rankings on the skill of those little Pocket Monsters.

Why did they give Ash a last name? No one is going to "Ketchum" all anymore XD. *shot*

Indeed. Lots of double entrandres there. How awesome. Usually, it's gay subtext, so I don't mind the other way. Hehe.

I forgot about Shigeru and the professor having surnames, so good catch. To me, Shigeru is usually an afterthought, so I don't immediate think of him on such things. Anyway, yes, I don't know why Nintendo has opted out of that. Of course, they've always had that problem -- look at Mario or Link (they don't have surnames, their media notwithstanding), then again, we have Samus Aran.

    Ugh. Insanity.

Edit: I can't wait to see what Sbaby would have to say on this one. Heh.

XD As well as that, maybe it was to fit in with "Satoshi"? Sa-to-shi -- Ash-Ketch-um

Actually Mario's last name is Mario (even Nintendo has confirmed this) meaning he's Mario Mario. Link's last name changes from game to game since they are of different family lineage (with the exception of games that feature the same link).

Ok, back on track. Agreed, Ketchum was a bad call on Ash's family name. Th dub gave everyone last names for no reason (Tracey Sketchit, Brock Harrison (unofficial), Misty William (also unofficial) ) it was point less. I think it was to fill the space by excess words in Japanese.

I'm sure Brock's last name was Rock? Brock Rock? Didn't his father say that? I can't remember.

    from bulbapedia:
Most official sources do not give Brock a last name. However, several sources suggest that in the anime, his last name is Harrison. In the July 2006 issue of K-Zone Magazine Eric Stuart was interview and stated that Brock's last name is Harrison.
Umm.. lets get off the names...

I knew of the Mario Mario thing from the live-action movie, but I didn't know if that carried over to the games. Either way, that's the ultimate laziness, so, yeah, I don't acknowledge it much. -_-

And Link's continuity is all over the place, so that's no shock, either.

Then again, I haven't paid attention to either character since the late 90's. Oh, bad Nintendo fan, bad!

Edit: Alright, let's move on. Anyone like the treadmill scene?
