[Pokémon] The Side Splitting Superstar (twoshot)

Forest and Sunny

in

"Side Spitting Superstar"

Chatter fills the school hallway as a stream of children ranging from kindergarten to the fifth grade makes its way to the auditorium. But one particular third grader is excitedly telling a red haired girl about the performance they are about to see. "...but forget the princesses--while they are funny in their own right, Brock was hilarious as the lord high chamberlain!"

"How hilarious was he?" a few other children ask.

"Just trust me on this one--I don't want to give too much away." the boy replies.

"Aw, just one little hint, Forest?" the girl begs.

"Let's just say he goes through the whole thesaurus describing the king's problem and leave it at that, Sunny." Forest smiles at the girl. The girl nods, satisfied with that answer, and follows her friend into the auditorium, where they take a seat on the left side of the room towards the middle.

Once the entire school is settled, the lights flash the five minute warning. The hostess then walks on the stage, depite the talking and shoving backstage. "Good morning, boys and girls--today we want to tell you about a king with a problem--and the equally clever solution..."

Blah, blah, blah...Forest thinks--having seen this production and others like it before, he knows the community theater's courtesy spiel well.

"...So without any further ado, we proudly present "The Four Elemental Princesses". the hostess concludes. The applause as she exits temporarily drowns out the chatter and bustle behind the curtains.

There are some awkward giggles as the curtains shake and jiggle for a moment. Then, after a few tense seconds, Brock, in character as a royal chamberlain, is unceremoniously shoved onstage.

"You didn't have to push me!" he calls back behind the curtain, to some laughter as he brushes himself off. "After all, as high chamberlain, I'm due more respect!"

Then, something dawns on him. "Due?" he murmurs before glancing up towards stage right, as if a clock is there. "Oh, Arceus, I'm OVERdue!" he melodramatically sighs. "It's already five minutes past eight!" Forest giggles at this.

Brock paces the stage, musing all the while. "Now, I know I was due at eight this morning, but due to do what?" The audience snickers at the pun.

Brock chuckles himself, bemused in the audience's laughter."I'm due to do whatever's my due, but overdue, I know not what to do!" More laughter ensues.

Then, Brock looks offstage, as if someone is prompting him. "What? Oh yes, now I remember what I was to do! I was to tell you all a tale about our fair land!" Sunny stiffles some giggles at this.

"Let's see here..." Brock thinks a moment as to how the story goes."Did it go like this?" he muses, looking off at his left hand. "Or did it go like that?" he wonders as he looks at his other hand. "Or was it..." he starts as he walks off towards stage right. "Or maybe wasn't it." he deadpans as he walks the other way, to some laughter. "Perhaps...possibly...perchance..."

He then stops dead in his tracks at center stage, as if finally remembering his story."Oh, of course!" He clears his throat. "There once was a kingdom--and if there was a kingdom, there was a king, and if there was a king, there was someone very intelligent as his most trusted advisor--the lord high chamberlain!" A "Ta-da!" stinger plays as a spotlight appears on Brock, to some applause.

After acknowledging his applause, he continues. "Now, this king--or Emperor Leowin, as he preferred to be called, was well liked among his people, but was not very bright when it came to ruling. But the lord high chamberlain commanded admiration and respect!" He takes a bow for effect.

He then looks off stage right and grimaces, as if someone offstage is yelling at him. "But I am telling the story!"

Sunny can hardly contain herself laughing as Brock and the imagined prompter argue. "You're right, Forest--this is too funny!"

"Oh, he's just getting warmed up!" Forest replies between giggles.

Onstage, Brock has forgotten about his fight with the imagined prompter and is pacing the stage. "Now, where was I?" he muses. He then looks back at stage right. "No, I know where I am, I'm just trying to figure out where I am in the story." he assures the imagined prompter, to some laughter. "Oh, yes...the Emperor had a real problem. It wasn't taxes, or Durants in the pant--" He then catches himself as the audience laughs. "Durants in the pantRY..." he corrects himself, to more laughter. "or Rattatas in the attic, or gold missing from the royal treasury. It wasn't anything like those at all..." He pauses for a beat, then says "He had FOUR unmarried daughters!" A "dun-dun-duuuuuuuuuun!" plays for effect, making the auditorium explode in laughter.

"Now anyone likes their freedom, including a king." Brock explains as he slowly paces the stage. "He likes a night out every now and again...But with four unmarried daughters, you can see he was in qute the dillema."

He then listens to the imagined prompter. "Worse than a dillema? Between a rock-type and a hard place?" Laughter goes up at this. "I know, I know! I only said he was in a predicament, a bind, a mess, a fix, an emergency..."

"And there goes the thesaurus." Forest comments, stifling laughter himself as Brock's words get increasingly more obscure.

"...a pickle, a CRISIS!" Brock finally finishes rattling off words some minutes later, to thunderous applause.

He sighs and calls offstage "Well, if you don't like how I'm telling it, then I'll just let you see for yourselves!" He then tells the audience "As for you, travelers, I will tell the tale EXACTLY as it happened--because I was there!"

With that, he walks back through the curtains and the lights go down to some applause as the overture begins.

"How is it so far, Ms. Kita?" Forest whispers to his teacher a few seats over.

"Hilarious--your brother has real talent at making people laugh." Ms. Kita smiles as she wipes away tears of laughter.

"Add comedian to his list of talents." Sunny agrees before turning her attention back to the stage.

Back onstage, the actor playing King Leowin and Brock (as the lord high chamberlain) are sitting at a chessboard, with a set of a castle room in the background.

Leowin sighs, and Brock sighs a few seconds later. After doing this a few times, Leowin comments "Alas..."

"Alack..." Brock answers

"Ah me... Leowin sighs again.

"Woe is me..." Brock answers. This continues, getting more and more over the top each time:

"Alack a day!

"Alas, the day!"

"Twiddle twaddle!"

"Fiddle faddle!"

"By the crowns of my ancestors!" Leowin finally announces.

"By my--" Laughter fills the air as Brock thinks of something to top the king. "By my..." he tries again, but no words come. Then, a wry smile crosses his face. "By the Great Lord Arceus in heaven!"

Leowin hangs his head, defeated, to more laughter. "Of course, what would you expect? I never win at anything..." he sighs. "There's no doubt about it, I'm the saddest emperor alive--a king accursed!"

"And I, the Lord High Chamberlain, am filled with gloom myself." Brock deadpans in agreement.

They get up and turn, and after much bumping and sidestepping, Leowin's crown is askew. "You see? No respect for the king--none! Not from the Lord High Chamberlain, not from my court, not even from my subjects! With so many girls in the palace, they've begun calling me Queen Leowin Desmond!" Laughter fills the air at this.

Brock is about to say something, but Leowin wants none of it."Oh I know, and I will not deny it--when a man has four unmarried daughters, he can't call his soul his own!" He impersonates a (really bad, compared to Brock) female voice--"More tea, Daddy? You seem sick, shall I send for the healer, Daddy?, Are your feet dry yet, Daddy?" As himself, he screams "I'm sick of being called Daddy!"

He paces the floor, with Brock right behind him. "But sire..." Brock starts.

Leowin whirls around to face Brock, catching him off guard. "And don't call me Sire! Have I been ever called as such?" The kindergarteners laugh the hardest at this joke.

"Well--" Brock starts.

"I'm the one telling this story, not you!" Leowin retorts, making the audience roar with laughter. "Now, I love my daughters, but they've changed...from sweet princesses to Sandshrews...Sandshrews, I tell you! Even Princess Adana, who "brings solace to all our troubles"!"

"There's no sense in disagreeing with that..." Brock sighs. "Since the people have said they wish the princesses married..."

"The people?" Leowin asks, interested.

"And the emperor." Brock adds.

Leowin nods in agreement. "Every man desires grandchildren...but where is that getting us? Every prince in the land was brought before them and not one will any of them have." He then whispers to Brock "Truthfully, not one of the princes wanted them either."

"Sire!" Brock balks at the revalation.

"We may as well face the truth--the princesses have lost their beautiful ways." Leowin sighs. "Their smiles now frowns, their voices into ranting....alas..."

"Alack." Brock answers again. Some of the first graders laugh when they recognize the joke from before:

"Ah me..."

"Woe is me..."

"Now, don't start THAT again!" Leowin demands, to laughter.

Brock places an arm on Leowin's shoulder. "Now now, we musn't be downhearted in trying times." he begins over some hopeful music. "We must have hearts like Enteis!"

"Entei hearts?" Leowin asks hopefully as the music crescendos.

Brock nods. "Fearless!"

"Fearless?" King Leowin asks over the inspired melody.

"Dauntless!" Brock triumphantly declares over a triumphant stinger.

A trumpet in the distance and a voice calling "Make way for the Princesses!" makes the triumphant song fall apart, much to the audience's delight.

Brock freezes in fear. "Speak of Darkrai, it's THEM!"

"Run for your lives!" Leowin agrees. Forest and Sunny laugh the hardest as Brock and King Leowin run around in circles, to the tune of "Yakety Sax". As they run laps around the stage, a brown haired girl in a red gown, a blonde haired girl in a blue gown, a black haired girl in a yellow gown, and an auburn haired girl in a green gown enter and look on with disapproval.

"DADDY!!!!" the four girls chorus, making "Yakey Sax" fade out. King Leowin comes to a screeching halt in his tracks, with Brock crashing into him a few seconds later.

"Ah, my girls...my lovely, beautiful girls...." King Leowin stammers.

"Lovely? Har har." the princess in red comments.

"Well, weren't you each named for the four powers that make up the world--the most beautiful things of all?" King Leowin asks, tugging his shirt collar nervously as he tensely approaches the princess in red. "Princess Kenna, whose heart of fire ignites my longing for success and rekindles my hope." The red princess yawns as Leowin approaches the girl in blue. "Princess Lana, calm as water, the noblest of the four powers!" Lana yawns as Leowin takes the hand of the girl in yellow. "And you, Taima, who follows where the thunder goes in all you do!" The yellow princess yawns as Leowin address the princess in green. "and finally, my dear Adana, whose power of earth brings solace to all my troubles." The green princess yawns as Leowin confesses "I was going to say that without these four powers, there would be nothing!"

"He means that without the four of you, there would be nothing in his world." Brock deadpans to the princesses, making the audience laugh

"And you mean nothing to our world, Mr. Hoity-pants!" Adana retorts.

"Now see--" Brock starts to shout.

"Stop treating us like Legendary Pokemon on display!" Kenna agrees. "I wouldn't have minded a different name that reflected my power..."

"'Terra' too earthy enough, Haughty-pants?" Adana taunts. Forest hears his sister laughing a few rows over.

"Or 'Thora'...that has a shockingly good ring to it!" Taima smiles, before trying to hug Brock close. The audience laughs as Brock is pushed and shoved around for a moment.

"Enya sounds pretty firey, right?" Kenna asks as she tickles Brock.

"I would rather have been named Talise, or even Undine! That evokes a spirit of the sea!" Lana muses.

"But since we are named after the four elementals that make up the world, we are the chosen ones!" Adana calls to the other princesses, who finally let Brock go. "We should combine our power and summon Lugia!" They then dance around Brock singing a mocking form of Lugia's Song, to some laughter.

"Someone call the guards!" Leowin calls over the noise.

The princesses then abandon their game and crowd around Leowin. "Daddy, no king makes that much noise!" Adana begins.

"Where's your nerves?" Kenna asks.

"And your dignity?" Lana agrees.

"Oh look, Daddy's tired..." Taima notes at the frazzled Leowin. "He should go take a royal nap."

"No, I don't need a royal sap!" Leowin thunders, but the audience's laughter makes him realize what he just said. "I mean a royal nap...sap...nap sap!" He sighs as some sad music cuts on. "By the crowns of my ancestors, I'm a TERRIBLE king!"

"Oh, Daddy..." Adana starts over to Leowin in an attempt to comfort him.

A record scrape interrupts the sad melody as Taima pulls Adana away. "Not yet! You'll ruin our plan!"

"But shouldn't we at least treat Daddy well for a change?" Adana tearfully asks. "I've had enough with your dumb plan!"

"Would you rather spend the rest of your life married to one of those fuddy duddys Sir Stuffington invites over?" Kenna asks, referring to Brock when she says "Sir Stuffington."

"No! ANYONE but one of Haughty-pants' friends..." Adana protests.

Meanwhile, Leowin confers with Brock. "How I longed for the days when we took day trips to Pelunon and visited Meridion! The girls were only babies then..."

"Helpless babes..." Brock agrees as he sighs with nostalgia.

"Flowers, songs, and dancing in those days..." Leowin agrees before noticing the four princesses strutting around the stage. "NOW what are you four plotting?"

"Silly Daddy, we're just practicing looking pretty in case more suitors come." Adana explains.

"Oh boy..." Leowin isn't sure what to make of the reply.

"But princesses, today is the last day set aside for courtship...the people wouldn't like that..." Brock cautions.

"And what's to become of my crown and kingdom?" Leowin agrees.

"Well, it would be easier if you didn't present us to clueless dolts!" Kenna shoots back.

"With eyeglasses..." Lana mimics someone with an eyeglass.

"And canes..." Taima mimics walking with a cane.

"Furthermore, how would you feel if we left you and Mr. Haughty-pants all alone?" Adana asks.

"I can think of nothing better..." Leowin sighs, lost in a daydream. The audience laughing and the princesses' elated looks cause him to reconsider what he said. "Oh no, no, I would be lonesome without you!"

"Don't worry, Daddy...we'd never leave you alone." Taima assures Leowin.

"Okay, I understand." Leowin laughs as the four princesses smother him in kisses and hugs. "Now, run along, I'm sure you have chores to do...or something!"

"Okay!" With that, the four princesses depart, revealing Brock pacing the floor.

"There has to be a solution to this problem..." Brock sighs before he stops before Leowin's throne. "Hm...an old tale has come to me..."

"Let's hear it, then." Leowin smiles, now in a better mood.

"In a land far from here, there was a kingdom ruled by women much like the Princesses." Brock begins.

"Mm-hm..." Leowin beckons Brock to continue.

"One day, these women traveled to another land, and were smitten by the lads there." Brock continues. "So smitten, in fact, they became sweet and proper ladies overnight!"

"Yes...but where to find a place with princes like that?" Leowin muses.

"It may only be a fairy tale." Brock concedes.

Just then, a trumpet is heard and an offstage herald announces "Lord Meridion of Pelunon!"

Another boy in lordly attire dashes into the room. "My old friend, Leowin!"

"Meridion, my brother!" The two kings embrace as some happy music plays. "How fare ye these days?"

"I come to you with a simple request--that my four sons, that I alone have raised, seek a fair lady's hand." Meridion explains.

"By Arceus, what a coincidence!" Leowin gasps. "While you have rased four sons, I've had to deal with four daughters!" He then notes four boys in ranger's garb in one corner. "And what fine lads they are!"

"His Majesty King Leowin hereby welcomes King Meridion of Pelunon and his sons!" Brock announces.

"Prince Aidan, of fire..." Meridion explains, prompting the boy in red to wave. "Prince Destin, of water..." The boy in blue waves. "Prince Taran, of thunder..." The boy in yellow waves. "and Prince Arden, of earth." The boy in green waves.

"Four elemental princes times four elemental princesses..." Sunny muses. "This is getting interesting!" she muses as the play continues....

Forest and Sunny giggle as an interlude signals the intermission's end, and the lights come up on Leowin studying the four princes. "Are those really the proper garments for courting?"

"We were told to come directly from the hunt..." Prince Aidan explains. So you could say it is open season on princesses." Laughter goes up at this.

Meridion laughs as well. "See how sharp my son's wits are!"

"Besides, we were hunting Deerling, so we came hoping your daughters were just as easy a catch." Prince Destin agrees.

"That's a good one!" Leowin laughs. "My princesses, little 'Deerlings!'"

"If you will just wait a moment, we will fetch the little Deerlings for you." Brock assures the princes before he and Leowin hurry offstage.

"My sons, where are your manners?" Meridion sighs. "The kingdom is in serious debt because of your wild ways..."

"We will not be wed!" Taran proclaims.

"But I say you will be!" Meridion retorts.

"Aw, can't we invade some other land?" Arden asks.

"No more invasions!" Meridion screams before sighing "Alas..."

"Alack..." the princes agree.

At this, Brock peeks out from the curtain at stage left and rattles off more laments at a rapidfire pace: "Ah me-woe is me-alack a day-alas the day-twiddle twaddle-fiddle faddle-pooh, pooh, pooh!" Forest's laughter is the loudest as Brock disappears again.

"A wife would be a burden to a great hunter!" Aidan explains.

"A nuisance to a skilled bird tamer!" Taran adds.

"A handicap to a great hero!" Destin agrees.

"An encumberance to a master Pokemon trainer!" Arden concludes.

"But there comes a time when a man must start a family..." Meridion starts.

"Not until we're old and gray!" Aidan shouts. The other princes cheer in agreement.

"But I say you WILL be wed!" Meridion roars before hopping around in pain from the stomp. The princes rush to his aid as the audience laughs.

Sunny can hardly contain her laughter as both sets of rebellious siblings clash and argue with each other. "The funniest play I've ever seen!"

"Brock really steals the show!" another boy agrees.

In the end, the four princes and princesses are matched with their respective prince, and Brock hurries to the center as the curtains begin to close. "You see? It was exactly as I told it to you! Likewise..." he starts, oblivious to the curtains. "Furthermore...they all quarreled happily ever after!" With that, the curtains close, but not before Brock gets in a final "Oh, bother!" from behind them.

"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!!!!!!!!!" the crowd roars as Brock leads off the bows.

"Oh man, that was funny!" Sunny wipes tears of laughter as the rest of the cast takes a bow.

"Brock needs to act more often!" another girl agrees.

"Oh, he will." Forest assures his friends. "You'll see."
