Hi everyone! I am fairly new to this forum community. I have been working on a little project writing about my experiences with the Pokemon games throughout the years. This was a personal project for me to reminisce about my childhood, but I figured I would share it with a community. I think this is where I would post it (sorry if it isn't!) A lot of us share some awesome experiences with Pokemon, and if you're curious, I plan on sharing mine. All the way from the beginning of my Pokemon journeys in 2008, to now. I hope you will find some enjoyment out of reading my experiences, maybe even laugh but I'm no comedian. You will probably cringe at my lack of experience at the beginning. Any thoughts, comments or criticisms on my writing would be greatly appreciated!
Part One:
It was December 24th, 2008. My family has a tradition of letting me and my brother open one present on Christmas eve. I remember quickly choosing the gift that looked like a DS case. To my excitement, I quickly unwrapped the gift and read the bold letters on the case: Pokemon Diamond. Now, this would be my first journey into the Pokemon games. I would watch reruns of Pokemon Master Quest after school so I knew what Pokemon was. I did not know much though. The only thing eight-year-old me was thinking about was getting a Pikachu. So I took the wrapping off the case, put the cartridge in my DS, and began what would become a passion for years to come.
I reached the part where Starly attacked my character and my buddy Jake (I wasn't exactly creative with choosing names). In about 30 seconds, I knew who would become my first Pokemon partner ever. All of the options looked awesome, but I knew in my heart it was a no-brainer to go with Chimchar. I could not resist what seemed like a monkey with his butt on fire. He was the first Pokemon I ever evolved, and he just got cooler every time. He was also the first Pokemon I had to reach level 100. His final evolution, Infernape, is still my favorite Pokemon to this day. I feel an emotional attachment to my first Chimchar more than any Pokemon I have ever trained. It's hard to explain how I can be attached to a bunch of pixels on a screen, but I just was. He really did feel like a pet; I believe wholeheartedly that pets are family so I guess you could say he was family to me. Anyway enough about my love for my starter.
Like any eight-year-old kid would do, I would only train my starter and use my other Pokemon as sacrifices to revive my starter in battle. The first gym was a pain until I grinded Chimchar's level so he could evolve into Monferno. Crasher Wake was my worst nightmare when I got to him. All of my Infernape's moves were ineffective against his Gyrados. I eventually got a win through luck. Little did I know, my journey was about to become a drag.
A few days after Christmas, my parents were going to a New Years party. Of course, I had to bring my DS along and show all the kids my Monferno. I had no idea the kid I would meet was a Pokemon fanatic. He had Pokemon posters all over his room, a Pokemon bed, Pokemon Cards, Pokemon toys, the Pokemon Ultimate Handbook, I could go on for a while; this dude had it all. While I was on reruns of Master Quest on TV, he had DVDs of all the episodes of Battle Frontier. The kid was a few years older than me so I knew he was a seasoned veteran when it comes to pokemon. Of course, little me had to ask the question that was bugging me as soon as I entered his room: "Do you have a Pikachu?" Not only did he tell me that he had one, but he also said he would trade it to me. I was ecstatic, I also had no idea that I could catch one for myself in the Trophy Garden. He told me to trade him whatever so I gave him a Buneary (your sacrifice will never be forgotten). He also decided to help me out by using an Action Replay on my game. He gave me 999 of every item, but I didn't understand how that was helpful at the time. He also made it so I had the national dex. He used this one cheat that made it so your character could walk through trees and buildings (since I did not know how to fly yet). He walked my character all the way back to Professor Rowan's lab so I could get the national dex dialogue. By that time I had to go home so I saved and turned off my DS. When I got home I was in for a surprise when I realized I could no longer walk through trees, still didn't know how to fly, and had no idea where to go. It stressed me out so I avoided the game for a few days. Eventually, I got back on track, but it took me a few hours to figure out where to go. Also, maybe I didn't know how to use him, but Pikachu sucked in battle. I swear he would get knocked out every time I used him.
A few days after that, I was on my way home from school on the bus. I was telling my friend how I was at some point in the game before the 7th gym and showed him my party. He saw my high leveled Infernape and the rest of my party that was not so high level. He offered to help me out a bit. Eight-year-old me wasn't going to pass on some free help (cause it worked sooo great last time). I let him borrow my cartridge for a few days. I get the game back and I have this high-level party, including a Dialga. Now we didn't explain the terms of what he was going to help me with, but I didn't think he was going to play through the rest of the game for me. He did leave me with a party I fell in love with though: Gengar (which he named Gaspar so I thought for awhile his actual name was Gaspar), Abomasnow, Aerodactyl, Staraptor, Dialga, and my Infernape. A bunch of internet guides later to figure out where the heck I was in the game, I decided to head to the battle tower. I did the quest at Stark Mountain and was excited to battle Heatran since he would technically be the first legendary I got to fight. In my inexperience, I did not save before the battle. I was struggling to catch it; its health was in the red, but I was unaware how giving it a status effect would boost my chances of catching him. Like the amazing trainer I was, I thought of the bright idea to lower his health just a tad bit more. Well, that worked wonders as I heard its cry and watched it faint. So... that sucked. I finished my journey by going against the Elite Four again. It was no easy task, but I was proud to accomplish something on my own (sort of). I had no idea what type matchups were so I would just pray for any move I used to be super effective against Cynthia's Garchomp. That Pokemon still haunts me.
The game definitely took me a while as I checked recently my Pokemon Diamond game was up to 207 hours. For some people that is a normal playthrough for them as they do everything the game has to offer. For me, I do not have a Pokemon game that has that many hours on it so I have no idea how I made it to that point. My journey did take a little longer than the average person since I didn't know what I was doing, but over 200 hours? I did do a ton of trading back and forth with other gen 4 games. Trading wasn't exactly quick back then. I remember having to catch "useless" Pokemon on one game cartridge so I could trade them for the Pokemon I wanted to put on the next game. Luckily my younger brother had his own DS so I could just borrow his to trade back and forth.
Anyway, that was my first Pokemon journey. Looking back, I was so young and inexperienced. I totally sucked at the game; however, the fact I remember all this shows how memorable that first experience was. I am sure most of us have had those "first experiences" with pokemon that changed our lives forever. Pokemon Diamond introduced me to one of the coolest franchises on the planet. Thank God I asked my parents for a Pokemon game (or gods if you believe in all that; if you don't, I won't discriminate). Even though I was a terrible trainer, I would soon get a chance to redeem myself once I snagged a copy of Pokemon Sapphire. Would it be redemption, or would I repeat the same mistakes… I guess we'll never know.
Just kidding, I have more reminiscing to do.
