BIG update from my last post. I have done a lot of stuff, but after you get Fly, things go quicker in terms of plot, not to mention that the speed button helps ^_^. Spoiler tags for the details!
So I beat the Saffron Gym pretty easily, Fangor was using Body Slam a lot, and Royal was able to kill pokemon with Thunderbolt as well. Sabrina really took a step down in this game, like several of the Gym Leaders (Lt. Surge as well as Koga later on), when compared to Red and Blue. She has three Pokemon, all at L50 - Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam. Not really anything to worry about. Alakazam was able to put down Royal, but Fagor came in and Body Slammed him for the KO.
Then I was on my way to Fuchsia, even though Koga's badge technically comes before Sabrina's (I was actually pretty underleveled against Sabrina). Cycling Road is always fun, especially since the Bicycle has never really been the same since Gens I and II. It just looks bulky and it rides weird (the turns I guess) in Gens III and IV. I haven't played B/W yet so I don't know about Gen V, but I assume it's the same as Gen IV. Anyway, upon arrival at Fuchsia, I went straight for the Safari Zone, where I got Surf on the second try and then got Strength as well from the Warden. Surf went to Fangor, replacing Bubblebeam, and Strength was taught to Slasher, although I will probably teach Strength to Biff later, as it is more accurate than Mega Punch. Took on the gym with Royal, who crushed everyone with Psychic and Thunderbolt. Koga was, as I said earlier, a disappointment, with 3 Venonats and a Venomoth, all who went down to one Psychic. Hardly indicative of a Gym battle.
Now that I had Surf, I was able to go to Cinnabar, but before that I finished battling the rest of the trainers on the other side of Fuchsia City. Then I surfed from Pallet Town to Cinnabar, taking care of the trainers on the way. Went to the Pokemon Mansion and got the Secret Key, along with several other items, including some vitamins. Crushed the Gym with Fangor, and took down Blaine with Biff for the Volocano Badge and Fire Blast (useless). Then I surfed east and battled all the trainers on the wasy to Seafoam, then Flew to Fuschia and went south for the final trainers in the Kanto region, aside from the Viridian Gym and Victory Road.
The final stop on the Kanto Gym circuit was back in Viridian City. The trainers in there were no match for Fangor and Surf, and they all went down. Fangor learned Hyper Beam just before fighting Giovanni. I had a close call against Giovanni, but was able to pull out the victory with just Fangor left. Here's a play-by-play:
Royal vs Dugtrio: Psychic, dug hole, Nightshade (miss), Dig (critical hit!), Royal fainted!
Biff vs Dugtrio: used Guard Spec., dug hole, sand attack, Dig, Dugtrio fainted!
vs Persian: Double team, Low Kick, Screech, Mega Punch (miss), Screech (fail), Low Kick, Persian fainted!
vs Nidoqueen: Tail Whip (fail), dug hole, Earthquake (miss), Dig, Tail Whip, Mega Punch, Nidoqueen fainted!
vs Nidoking: Earthquake, Biff fainted!
Fangor vs Nidoking: Surf, Nidoking fainted!
vs Rydon: Hyper Beam, Rock Slide, recharge, used Guard Spec., Hydro Pump (critical hit!), Rydon fainted!
I must say that that Guard Spec at the end was one of the dumbest things I have ever seen, as Rock Slide had taken 70% of Fangor's health, even if my stupid Hyper Beam was even dumber :P.
After I got the Earth Badge and Fissure (useless), I healed up and went to the Power Plant to fight the final trainer there and kill all the Voltorbs marsqurading as Pokeballs. Picked up Thunder on the way and a couple vitamins, then killed Zapdos with Biff's Rockslide after Royal was Drill Pecked to death after confusing Zapdos with Confuse Ray and a neutral Thunderbolt. Taught Fangor Ice Beam and Biff Earthquake just to clear out room in my bag for some items lol.
Then I started my way to Victory Road, where I encountered Gary for a "warm-up."
This battle was a bit easier, as his Pokemon were underleveled (I was underleveled against Giovanni's last two Pokemon), and he still hadn't evolved his Exeggcute.
Another play-by-play:
Royal vs Sandslash: Psychic, Swift (uneffective - what, no Ground move?), Psychic, Sandslash fainted!
vs Exeggcute: Night Shade, Stun Spore, took in sunlight, fully paralyzed, Solarbeam, Thunderbolt (critical hit!), Exeggcute fainted
vs Magneton: Thundershock, Psychic, Thundershock, Psychic, Magneton fainted!
vs Ninetales: Ember, Psychic, Ember, Thunderbolt, Ninetales fainted!
vs Kadabra: Reflect, fully paralyzed, Psybeam, Royal fainted!
Fangor vs Kadabra: Surf (critical hit!), Kadabra fainted
vs Vaporeon: Hyper Beam, Hydro Pump (miss), recharge, Acid Armor, Hyper Beam, Vaporeon fainted!
After kicking his butt, moved on to Victory Road and after going through all the annoying checkpoints, saved outside Victory Road and will tackle it and the final stretch against the Elite Four next time!
