[Theory] Theory on pokemon moves

Personally, I don't buy the whole four move limit stuff in the pokemon franchise. I understand it is for balance and strategy especially when it comes to competitive battling but let's be realistic. Coming from an anime POV or how it should be like, a lot of acts what are classed as moves could be used in everyday rituals or just normal acts in general, particularly physical moves.

The move Tackle is probably the most basic move what every pokemon should be able to learn, I think. Bite is another basic move what is essentially used all the time by all pokemon when they are eating so could be classed as not even a move in theory. All pokemon with hands should be able to use Mega Punch and all pokemon with legs should be able to use Mega Kick. Also with enough training, all pokemon with hands and especially claws should be able to learn attacks like Slash and Metal Claw. The latter requiring extra training. Any physical type move what is situated with a particular part of the body should be able to be learned by any pokemon at all with that body part. All battling pokemon should be able to learn most fighting type moves, particularly those that stand on two legs and have two arms. The ones what include the Steel specialty should be able to be learned by any pokemon with that body part. These are Iron Tail, Steel Wing and Metal Claw.

As for special elemental moves, some moves with different names could be exactly the same move but with different power. For example, Ember, Flamethrower and Fire Blast are different powers but essentially the same move. Same can be said for Thundershock, Thunderbolt and Thunder.

Unlike physical moves, most special moves can only be learned by certain pokemon, particularly in that elemental group and some moves can be learned by only one or a few pokemon such as how only Arceus knows Judgement and only Latios can learn Luster Purge.

If in a fight or trying to defend oneself, there should be no place for four-limit rules and anything goes when it comes to physical attacks. Levels should also not come into it. Any pokemon can learn whatever move their body's limitations can take at any time. It also doesn't matter if they are wild or not.

If we're talking about the animé, then no, the trained 'mons are not limited to only having 4 moves. The episode I can only remember at the moment is when Ash was battling against the Fighting-type Frontier Brain, where Ash commanded Snorlax to a total of five moves.

But my theory on why trained 'mons only have 4 moves is because their trainers want them to perform those 4 moves effectively. Knowing more might make the Pokémon a bit confused, trying to remember how to properly perform the attack. They are wild creatures, after all, so while they should know the basic attacks and defenses, a trained one will be trained to perfect 1 or 4 moves so they can win in trainer battles. /shrugs
