Today I went to the game store because I wanted to buy Pokémon Ruby version, and they did have it. Hooray! I really wanted to play it on my DS instead of playing it again on my laptop, or borrow it from a friend (I did that YEARS ago, and I really don't want to ask him again).

But then, the owner of the game shop said the evil words: "it's a hundred bucks". A HUNDRED BUCKS. FOR AN OLD AND USED GAME! I didn't buy it, of course. I don't have a hundred bucks. I've tried to find it on eBay a long time ago, but there's only one problem. I was too afraid of buying a fake one, so I started searching on YouTube, trying to find a video explaining how to catch a fake GBA game. How could I forget that? I tried to search something about it AGAIN, because I have completely forgotten how to spot a fake one.

I soon realized that the guy who tried to sell me the game for one hundred bucks was trying to sell me was a fake one. For one. Hundred. Bucks. Thank Groudon I didn't buy it.

UPDATE: I've already bought an original Ruby version for a fair price. A big thanks to a few of you guys who tried to help me find it.

I was wondering... are your Pokémon games original? If not, have you experienced any saving issues or other kind of problems?

I bought one from ebay years ago myself from an overseas seller, I didn't know about fakes back then, well after playing it froze on me, come to find out it was a fake, so now I know to look at the colors of the games, but have you tried looking on craiglist for a ruby game?
And my goodness, that game is not worth $100 ever.

Aw, that sucks. I don't have good experiences with fake games, especially Game Boy Color ones. I still remember the day when I stared blankly at my Game Boy because my save got deleted. I have never tried Game Boy Advanced fake ones, but now I think I'm never going to try them at all. I've tried everything I could, but I couldn't find an original Ruby game. They are pretty hard to find, especially where I live.

I've been lucky enough to not run into any fake games, but that's probably because any used ones that I've gotten have been through EB Games/Gamestop, and I doubt they'd be selling fake games. And it's probably a good idea you didn't spend $100 on Ruby anyways, because even if it were a real copy, most cartridges are running into the problem where the internal battery runs out, and time-based events no longer function.

And since this is a games related thread, I'm going to move this over to Pokemon Gaming Central, as the discussion would be better suited over there.

Definitely not worth $100. A used copy should cost you no more than $20.

All my games are legit. I bought my games in their hay day, so no fakes here. $100 for Ruby is way too much, though. I know legit copies are hard to come by, but they don't run for that much. New, maybe, but definitely not used.

Yes gamestop does take in fakes, I went in to my local store here and they had a fake emerald game that I told them that it was a fake.

I totally agree with you. I feel sorry for those ones who bought old GBA games from that store.

I didn't find the original copy, though, and I had to buy a fake one. Bad decision: my saves got deleted and I almost had a heart attack. Same thing for the Silver version.
As for the Advance Generation, my friend used to lend me his Pokémon games because I couldn't afford a Game Boy Advance at that time. When I got my DS I bought the Diamond version, but I missed the Ruby version. And now here I am, still trying to find an original copy that doesn't cost my entire life.

Used AND fake. I felt like I was being punched in the face.

All the games I have, from R/S/E to B2/W2, are 100% genuine - no fakes.

& my copy of Ruby was used & I had to pay around 30$ for it if I remember correctly. I was still surprised that they had it, as it was pretty tough to come by.

That's unfortunate =/ I feel bad for anyone who actually does buy a game from that store. I've always bought mine while they were still available new in stores so I've never had any problems with fake copies. Good luck in finding a legit, working copy! Maybe you'll be able to find a real one on Craigslist or something. (:

Why would they ever sell a fake DS game at $100? They're really trying to scam you aren't they?
I only had one saving issue, only when the screen freezes while playing the Battle subway in White. Fortunately that doesn't happen very often. I agree with Andr3w's words to get a copy from Craigslist, maybe also try Amazon and Ebay.

I bought Emerald from Amazon for $40 (no luck at local retailers) as it was the only Gen III game I didn't have, thankfully the cartridge was legit as I was able to migrate pokemon safely.

However if you're dumb enough to buy a fake Pokemon game for $100 without checking the cartridge at least, then you deserve to have your money stolen.

If you can't find an original copy I'd say your best bet is Amazon, if you buy from a trusted seller you could probably get a legit one for around $30-35, if you get a bootleg you can return it.

I bought all of my Pokémon games the year they were released. Unfortunately I lost my Emerald, Sapphire, and Platinum versions... I did buy an Emerald version from eBay not too long ago and it turned out to be fake. I wasn't aware of that issue until it was too late :(

All of my Pokemon games were bought new, so I know they're legit. However, I like to collect oddities, so if I see a pirated cartridge for sale at a low price (I don't want to rip off Nintendo), I might pick it up just to own. Half of them I have never played, but some of them are interesting. Notably I have a cartridge called "Pocket Monsters 2" which is a hack of some side scrolling game (I think it's a Sonic game, but I can't be sure), starring Pikachu. It's actually fun and (surprisingly) doesn't have any game breaking bugs, but the controls are a little sloppy.

This is not that big of a deal. things the internal battery effects is Shoal Cave's water level, Evolving Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon. Or Lilycove's lottery.

The only one that would of really effected me would be not being able to grow berries. And to have a Blissey with Seismic Toss, I would pay that kind of money. {XD}

To answer your question. We don't have a problem with "fake games" in Australia. Ive never heard of anyone having this kind of a problem. How are you even certain that it was fake if you didn't buy it..?
