I personally feel that a good username comes from your heart. It should be something which, in one word or phrase, sums your self-image up. Therefore I find the use of random numbers (the numbers in the range of 1970-20xx, where xx is the final two digits of the current year, is acceptable) to be nothing short of sloppy and well...not very well thought out. Though I do admit, using a year at the end of your username is fine (since a given year can hold special meaning to a person)
Another thing that gets me is excessive usage of symbols. Rather than converting any of the letters to a look alike unicode equivalent so you can have a name which is already taken is nothing short of rude and well...it shows lack of will to innovate, which is kinda important if you ask me.
Finally, using common sense, Don't load your username full of characters you cant easily type on your preferred keyboard layout. So if you have a US qwerty keyboard...stick with what you see on that please, dont bother trying to hax in your unicode crap with alt+<key value, typed on the number pad>
