Check everything before you get it. Ask for it's IV's (If it has perfect IV's its prolly a hack), ask for the OT, and like Harumi mentioned, some of them are gender specific. Also Ask for the quip on the second page like arrived at kanto at Lv. 30. Bulbapedia has a decent event listing so even if you do accidentally get fleeced you can usually go on there and look at an exact picture of the actual pokemon's stats and info. :)
