1st Gen Trading using 3DS - help!

Does anyone have any idea how to trade? I've got Pokemon Red and need to trade my Kadabra and Machoke so they can evolve, but how do you use the trade system? It pops up with a screen with two options, either send an invitation or accept one. My girlfriend has Yellow and is currently in another country, can I trade with her? We were trying last night but it wasn't working. Do we have to be right next to each other?

Yeah for the 3DS versions you still need to be right next to each other. Only difference is the trading can be local wi-fi instead of link cables. Sorry this is being an inconvenience for you. D=

Ah bummer. Thanks anyway... my next questions are - when I transfer the Pokemon I've got in Red to Sun/Moon, will they trade..?

And/or can a 3DS trade with a DS? Can the DS access the eShop and buy R/B/Y?

For your first concern, you mean you can trade your Pokemon back from Sun/Moon to Red? Not much info just yet and I could be wrong, but most likely not due to Sun/Moon probably having new features here and there. Kinda similar how there are some restrictions when trading from OR/AS to X/Y.

For your second concern, I believe no you can't buy R/B/Y through the DS due to no more internet maintenance for DS (at least I think that was what happened). It has to be through 3DS's eShop, I'm afraid.

Pokemon transferred to Pokemon Bank on the currently-released games aren't considered traded so no, they don't evolve.
Virtual Console games can only be purchased and played on a 3DS
