What level do you usually train your pokemon to before facing the 1st gym leader? I usually get 2 pokemon and train them to either 16-18 before even stepping foot in the gym. What about you guys?

I do Too. Lol. Im very concerned about winning the gym the first time..
I try to at least get my starter to lv. 18, and others to 14-16
And Normally by the first gym I have at least 3 Pokemon...

    Level 10.
Call me weird, but my Pokemon are always way behind in levels.
They're usually lower levelled than wild Pokemon.
IN fact, all of my pokemon except for 1 were below level 50 when I beat the Elite 4. o.O

Hmm, I only use my starter(evolved) to beat Roark when they are at level 16+, all of my other pokes aren't really needed to beat him.

I'm putting a gym leader down XD

How do you survive in Platinum???

I always catch a flying type pokemon before facing the gym leader.

I capture a Geodude, train my starter to around 13? Then begin.
    For G/S/C, I capture a Gastly and a Dunsparce.

I make sure I evolve my starter before Facing Roark.
    >_>
    Unless it's Turtwig.
Because I do not wish to grind on Geodudes until I reach level 18.

    Depending on the game.
But on diamond, i just run straight at the gym as soon as i can... I always win ;)

For me, it depends on the Starter I choose. Its always Level 14 if I choose Chimchar (so that it evolves and learns Mach Punch) but with the other two, they usually end up on Level 14-16 while fighting in the Gym.

With my Platinum, I ended up catching a Budew to push myself through the Gym a little quicker, but it was only a temporary stand-in for my real team; much like Buizel was, when I used it in Platinum as well. I've never taken on Roark at anything lower than Level 13, though.

As for other aspects, I usually catch a Starly, but I actually broke the mold, so to speak, when I ended up not bothering with a Flying type in my Platinum until after getting to the North part of Route 210 for a Swablu. (which is after getting the SecretPotion from Cynthia) Instead, the only Pokemon I caught that I was actually planning on using around the first couple of towns was a Shinx on Route 202.

Ahh, something that holds true in Platinum; I usually train up to Level 9/10 before taking on the Rival for the first (second, in Platinum) time. I try to keep all my levels even, so whatever Pokemon I plan on using, I train them all up to Level 9/10.

Other than that, I spend something like 10 minutes deciding on what name to use for my character . XD

I'm I usually catch two additional Pokemon along with my starter and level them up quickly. Usually, at the end of the training, my team's about 3 levels higher than the first gym leader's average. x3

my pokemon are usualy at least 5 levels behind the gym leaders/E4 pokemon :S that includes the 1st one.

I train my Pokemon to at least 10+ before the first gym, but I also try to evolve my starter before that as well.

well the cases are differnt in different games...
but in diamond i chose chimchar which is a bad match up for the first gym so i kept on battling caught a starly and wat not. evolved my chimchar in monferno and only used that 1 pokemon 2 destroy the gym leader lolz.

I don't do anything. I get to them at the level I get to them at, and beat them with that level.

I always try to beat the E4 in the shortest amount of time as possible. Then I play.
I always choose Fire starters. My favorites.
