Hows about once per year, we have a tryout for people willing and able to be mods?
We can ask 'How often are you on PC?' and 'Which part of the forum would you like to moderate?'

The mods can choose the best and MAYBE promote them to Mod IF they do well.

Hows about that for an idea?

We just don't work that way. We just look at the most active members, the ones who make great posts and contributions, and the ones who report quite often and, when we need a mod, we ask them to join us.

We did the tryouts thing like 8 years ago, but, since then, our current system has worked pretty nicely.

And, after all, letting anybody be a moderator for a day could have really bad results, knowing some of our members.

PC tried that system years ago...interviews over AIM predominantly...and they've abandoned it in the interim because one can put up a pleasant facade in an interview and then become a tyrannical moderator.

If you wanna be a mod, just be a valuable, helpful, and active member and wish upon a star and your wish may come true. :D

Yeah, this wouldn't work very well. There would be no way to tell whether the member was truly a good member or whether they were just putting on a facade for the interviewer's sake. The way things are done now has worked for several years and is definitely a superior way of finding staff members.

^The first member modded by tryouts! 8D

    Just kidding don't eat me.

Like said before, this would be kind of pointless since we're... actively paying attention to members that stand out for staff positions anyways. There's not really a point to limit it to a certain time. Plus, we only need so many mods and we only hire when necessary, so having one big influx once a year would be... too much?

    Oh, ok then.
I will abandon the idea, and hopefully never think of it again.
    Wishin' stars, here I come.

Well, yeah... This is just an opinion from a random newb. So, you can ignore it if you want.

The tryout system, although can prove to be successful, also has its downsides like what did Timbjerr and Yuoaman said. However, this loophole can be avoided with constant watching from the upper sides and normal members.

Sometimes I wonder: "How hard it is to pick a Moderator on a Pokemon Forum? Modding Forum can do them in no time". Now all seemed more clear.

The main reason that I wonder about that is maybe because I've wandered on Modding Sites for too long. And I got my answer now:

On a Modding Forum, it's easier to pick a Mod based on what do they excel on (Sometimes you already know what do they excel on because you have already seen him/her in other Forum(s)). And most also fits for other roles such as watching the community. That makes Tryout System (nearly) completely obsolete.

However, on a Community Forum, it's harder to do because of the fact that you can't pick a Mod based on what they excel on (Except Game Development, ROM Hacking, and S&M). That's why Tryout System COULD work, but NOT always on these types of sites.

    Feel free to ignore this.

It's certainly better than wasting $2000 on getting it automatically
I suppose I will get me a wishin' star.

Also, parralelzero, I AM NOT a cannibal.
I would only eat you if you had a chocolate filling and covering(but dark, I am on a diet)
