Looked back through a month and didn't see a thread, so...

Anyone here read Twilight? Or any of the books? What did you think of them?

I personally disliked them strongly. I thought they weren't written well, and the characters were shallow. =\ And Bella's and Edward's relationship kind of... made me sick. xP

But on the other hand, I actually like some of her fresh ideas when it comes to vampires. Don't know about the sparkling, but the venom and stuff I thought was creative. There were a lot of things in the book that I liked, I just though the way they were executed was poor.

But enough of my review... what do you think? =3

I've seen the movie, and I've read(but still haven't finished the 1st book), and I thinks it mediocre at best and incredibly overrated. I can't believe it outsold and beat The Dark Knight at the MTV Movie awards! It's like most Disney stars: only famous beacuse of brainwashed psycho fangirls. Otherwise it's a good read.

I could not hate something so much if I tried.

I despise Twilight Fan girls. I am sorry, but they just annoy me to the high heavens.
    I can't stand it.

I got dragged to the movie but some female friends who wanted to see it. I had nothing better to do so I went.
    When the main character said:

    "Say it, say it."
    "Vampire."

I just got up and walked out. I could not watch any more of this cringe worthy film.
Also, through out the years of vampire stories, THEY DON'T SPARKLE! [/rant]

WELL. *takes a deep breath to start a long text*

I have read the books, and I liked them, though the story was obvious from the beginning. And kinda weird.
But that hype about the movie...well first, golden rule:

THE BOOK IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN THE MOVIE

And the movie is overrated. It was okay, and they did is as good as they could, but still. And poor robert pattinson. He can not even walk along the street without being bothered by 50 fangirls. Everyone screams: 'edward, I love you' ...um..he just played a roll. Plus, a perfect boy is a boring boy. honestly. That'd be interesting for 2 weeks and then...byeeee! Besides, they wouldn't bother him that much if they really 'loved him'. lol.

I'd rather stick to harry potter. I watched it first in fourth grade and the story is better than that. There are soooo many vampire storys, no one ever cared about them (buffy!). And now everyone is obsessed with vampires, they even beg for getting bitten.

    Its just completely nuts.

OK, so my friends and I were all into the vampire thing BEFORE Twilight came out (thank you Anne(sp) Rice), and I started writing a book about vampires.

    AND THEN TWILIGHT CAME OUT.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE THE BOOKS.
    It's just....everyone thought I was copying Twilight.
Also, then the preppy kids...and my 12 YEAR OLD SISTER became obsessed with vampires and ruined EVERYTHING.

Then the movie came out. I REFUSE TO WATCH AND EVEN PROTEST IT. (My self-protest 1 woman picketline lasted all of 5 minutes TwT).
So when said fangirls only talk about the movie, I nearly hurl on them.

    And last but not least:

AM I THE ONLY RESPECTABLE PERSON ON EARTH WHO THINKS THE GUY THEY CAST FOR EDWARD IS BUTT UGLY? [/rant]

I dislike TWILIGHT with a passion. The story never appealed to me and quite frankly when I went to see the movie it didn't even come close to being good. My sisters love it but not me. Honestly I don't see what the hype is about.

AM I THE ONLY RESPECTABLE PERSON ON EARTH WHO THINKS THE GUY THEY CAST FOR EDWARD IS BUTT UGLY? [/rant]

Oh I know. xDD There's something wrong with his chin. o.o

It's funny how all the posts in the thread so far are anti-Twilight for the most part. xD I guess it's not as popular as one might think.

So, let's find a topic for discussion... hm... let's start with Edward Cullen. What was your opinion of him? Looks-wise, personality-wise?

I can't stand him, really. He's a textbook example of an abusive boyfriend, and he has no developed personality to speak of. Also, in the book it never really tells you what he looks like, other than being cold and hawt. o.o It's like, a head with red hair and yellow eyes, and the rest is all fuzzy.

I agree with you, Akuma. u_u Book > Movie.
Thare is a movie now makes it more appealing to the general public (as I know some people who do not like the read). But it's deffinitally overrated. You won't hear me say that I hate the Twilight Series, since hate is such a strong word. Nor do I dislike them, no in fact, I actually enjoyed reading "Twilight" and "New Moon". "Eclipse" is laying on my bookshelve to be read someday soon, as I have no time to read nowadays.
They are light litterature (if you can call it like that), enjoyable to read, and decently written. It's not a great style, but it's nicely written. (fyi, I've read the Dutch translation. Even though my friend says that the original is better, I like the translation)

The big part of the Twilight Fangirls (Otaku's as in how the japanese originally meant it) think too much of the book and the movie. I don't even think Rober Pattinson is that handsome. *waits for the rotten tomatoes*
I heard stories that made me raise my eyebrows and frown deeply at the same time. Attacking people who say that they don't like the books? Or throwing acid in people's faces because they sad the same? What's that? Where's the option of freedom of speach? It's to be farfetched.
But then there are those who say that they truely hate Twilight and all the things that come with it. As I said, hate is a very strong word. One of my history teachers once said: "to hate, you should love first".

Agressive discussions I read here and there made me wonder multiple times where the "normal" readers were. People who didn't particulary liked or disliked the book. Who just thought it was a book like any other book.
The movie didn't even include some of the greater scenes. E.g.: when Bella was "attacked" by those bullies (that was in it) and she said: "At that time I remembered exactly where my pepperspray was, under my bed, unopened."
    That made me chuckle.

Also, the story isn't that original... but manages to turn it's rather overused theme into something more original. Love Triangles seem to be a must in stories meant for girls. It's the same in most of the "Shoujo manga/anime" as well.
Talking about anime/manga, I heard many people resent Vampire Knight (Guilty) because it resembles Twilight so much.
I beg to differ. I saw Vampire Knight before I read Twilight and didn't think about the anime at all when reading. Except that I envisioned some as the characters as characters. But I do that all the time, just like that I see "Rodolfo" from "Stravaganza:City of Masks" as "Legault" from "Fire Emblem: Blazing sword". Nothing wrong with that, is there?
Of course there are the similarities:
    1) Vampires. Why not?
    2) Love Triangle with two people who truely hate/dislike eachother. Shoujo manga/anime as I said before. It's somewhate of a must. XD
    -stop-
Hm... -sigh- The stories are completely different. Stop comparing the two, they have nothing to do which eachother. >:

    But back on topic.
I enjoyed reading the books, the movie was nice, but it's so overrated. -sigh- There are so many books that are way better. Fanism (?) is nice, but do it moderately.
    Says an half-addicted anime fan
Don't start beating up people because they don't like the same book as you do. Twilight Haters, don't go to war. It is after all, just a book and movie. ._."

AM I THE ONLY RESPECTABLE PERSON ON EARTH WHO THINKS THE GUY THEY CAST FOR EDWARD IS BUTT UGLY? [/rant]
I couldn't agree even more. He's too, how do I put this... hairy to be playing an eternally young 17 year old vampire.

Anyways, the movie and books are to overrated, but actually enjoyable, and I feel bad I still haven't finished the first one. Also, is anyone tired of the annoying 'Team X' and 'Team Y' psycho fangirls?

    You mean the fangirls that take it personally when you suggest their mascot isn't perfect? =P They're alright if they're just having fun with it, but the ones that think you're attacking them are the ones that bother me. They feel like it's their need to "convert" you to whatever sort of following they belong too, and it's just generally unhealthy to devote yourself that fully to a fictional character. It's fine to have a "Team Edward" shirt or "Team Jacob" written on your stuff, that's not bad. But when it becomes the focus of your life... <_<;;

Mudkipblader: I agree on what you said about haters; people who devote themselves fully to hating the books aren't much better than the rabid fans, in my opinion, especially if they haven't even read them. And some of those "Fangirl Encounter" stories, like the one with the acid, are really hard to believe.

I'm positive that everyone, and myself would enjoy the books/movies much more if it wasn't so overrated.

I mainly read the books for the suspense in them. And I appreciated the movie and book much more after the big bloody, screaming scene in the ballet studio scene at the end of the book/movie. I would like the books/movies much more if it had less romance and lovey crap and more of those kinds of scenes.

What irked me in the movie was Kristen Stewart's acting. She was fine in the intense, suspenseful parts, but in every romance scene she was just a little... off. I almost laughed when she told Edward, "Your hand is... so cold." And she wasn't really fantastic in the "I know what you are" scene either. Those were both pretty awful. :l

Overall though, the books/movie are actually pretty good. And I would enjoy them more if I knew they weren't so overrated.

I had a go at reading the first book. However, it didn't take me in =[
That is mainly why I didn't read the rest and maybe why I hate the film so much.

Wait, no, I hate it so much because it is one of the worse films I have ever seen! ><'

The books are okay, and can be enjoyed as long as you know that you're not walking into a masterpiece. But the movie... I've only seen bits and pieces from when my two 15 year old sisters watch it... it's like a dead fly smeared across a live fly...

Agressive discussions I read here and there made me wonder multiple times where the "normal" readers were.

They're staying inconspicuous, trying to keep away from the crazy fans/haters.

I have not read the book, nor seen the movie, but I'm tickled by the amount of attention they're getting because I know it'll all be forgotten in a few years. It's just a fad, but an amusing fad.

The Anti-guys shouldn't care about it that much if they don't like it, I mean, nothing better to do? And screw those fan girls Dx I liked robert pattinson in harry potter, but he changed his looking somehow. I also like his singing. The HP-guys got it. I think he is good. example:

    weird picture o.o

though tom felton is better xD

I wouldve like it if it weren't so overrated.

Really, one of my friends was so obsessed her schedule book was full of Twilight pics. She kept on spamming Youtube videos about Twilight with "Edward x abc" (abc isn't her name, I just replaced it for censority). I don't know (or forgot) what she has also done without my presense, but I think she... IS obsessed.

AM I THE ONLY RESPECTABLE PERSON ON EARTH WHO THINKS THE GUY THEY CAST FOR EDWARD IS BUTT UGLY?

CONGRATS. You have answered the most important issue in my heart. You deserve something far more better than cookies.

Okay, I can tell you right now that I hate Twilight... The first book, for example... I don't know why, but whenever I read the book, I have to do it in the bathroom, because I nearly threw up... I am not kidding, I nearly threw up reading the book. Heck, right now, as I think back, my stomach is getting upset.

The plot... if you can call it that... is just two people staring at each other, with a small side plot in there. The grammar is horrible, with so many sentences that don't need to be there, dragging it on and making the book look worse. The characters are flat, 2-D cardboard cutouts. And there's a few other things that I don't like, but I really don't want to get into those.

I am actually scared to say 'I hate Twilight' in public. The people here, I don't know if they have gang connections or not, and if they lurve Twilight to a big enough extent, I might end up waking up with a gun in my face. These uber fans are nuts. I mean, I know there are fans of Twilight that are rational, intelligent people, but... where I am, it's either you are an uber fan, you're an anti, or you haven't read it... It's sad, really.

That's all I have to say, really... other than what is below.

In an interview with Robert Pattinson(sp?) he admitted that he doesn't like Twilight, and he is now branded with the name 'Edward Cullen' for the rest of his life. I feel sorry for him, because his fans are slowly killing him. If he were to date anyone, I would expect his girlfriend/boyfriend to be dead in a week.

Seriously. A week, that's how long I would give them. I mean, I'm surprised that RPattz is alive now. He isn't that bad of an actor, and I fear that one day, he will be dead, from either running from his fans, or being cornered by his fans.

Hope I didn't offend anyone, but that might happen sometimes.

The characters are flat, 2-D cardboard cutouts.

I thought I ran into Kristen Stewart at the mall once. Turned out it really was a cardboard cutout. To be fair, the cutout had about the same amount of personality as her character, so...

I've never read the books (the poor trees sacrificed for such a pointless purpose), but I have been forced to suffer through the movie. The only way I could endure was snarking as much as I could throughout (and this was in school, I should note). Inspired by something I read on the web, I started humming the Sonic the Hedgehog theme during the bit where they run up the mountain.

And the baseball scene has ruined Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" for me.

Y'know what really irks me about the series? There's no actual romance between the two characters. As far as I can tell from what I've seen and the accounts I've read, he wants to eat her and she just thinks he's pretty. Yeah, that's true love for sure.

Actually, there's one more thing that bugs me about the series. I'm pale, antisocial, and have a somewhat flat personality. Where are all my fangirls?

OK, so my friends and I were all into the vampire thing BEFORE Twilight came out (thank you Anne(sp) Rice), and I started writing a book about vampires.
    ...lol?
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE THE BOOKS.
    It's just....everyone thought I was copying Twilight.
Also, then the preppy kids...and my 12 YEAR OLD SISTER became obsessed with vampires and ruined EVERYTHING.
Twilight is basically every cliche vampire romance book compacted into one series. It's bland, stupidly overrated, the characters are unlikable, it has absolutely no plot whatsoever. The books are terrible, the movie was terrible, and if people were accusing you of ripping off twilight in your book, they're also accusing you of being bland and unoriginal, seeing as everything portrayed in the twilight series has already been done at one point or another.
So when said fangirls only talk about the movie, I nearly hurl on them.
Average Twilight fangirl=overweight 12 year old cookie-cutter who buys all their clothes at the hot topic, and thinks this makes them look hardcore.

Twilight is rubbish, and before any of you jump on my ass about saying this, yeah, I tried reading the first book in the series to see what my sister was so hyped up about. Got to about page 70 or so before I realized i had absolutely no interest in that generic crap whatsoever.

People have brought up a lot of good points.

Cerebra: He wasn't bad in Harry Potter. The acting didn't seem so forced, and he actually managed to get into the role. In Twilight I think it was a little difficult since he had to act and talk in a convincing American accent, but that still doesn't account for all the fail of the role. It's just awkward to act in a character with no definable personality, in my opinion, because then you don't really have a base to start at except to be OMG HAWT.

Zeta Dimentio: I agree with what you said; the plot and characters need a lot of work. The side thing is that in the hands of a competent writer, the ideas could have been made into something better, but not as popular. I think the 2-D characters and minimal plot are what draw a lot of people in, because they can insert themselves into the vague personality that is Bella and have fantasies about the perfect man, who is also left decidedly undecided.
Also, did you hear about that one Twilight-obsessed girl that was stalking him? Apparently she would stand outside where he was staying, I think while he was shooting for "Little Ashes", and just stare at him. And he, being who he is, decided to take her out to dinner. Then all he did was complain about his life the whole time and she never came back. xDDD

Has anyone else noticed that Meyer seems incapable of writing a healthy romance? It seems like all of her couples are based on looks and fate (imprinting), and those that aren't never display any romantic behavior towards each other at all.
