It must suck liking those kind of settings when all you get is the same bunch of otakubait characters over and over and over again. Light novels pls go.

Well I just usually ignore it now.

I mean western alternatives like GoT or LOTR is just as filled with such exagerrations, but instead of hyper sexualization it's gratuitous violence.

Can't really sell fiction to the masses without such pandering. I mean one could have a critically acclaimed title, but never heard of.

Well, that's true for LotR, but GoT has over-sexualization and general sexual content up the wazoo. And quite a lot of other shows, actually. All in all, it's really not so much different in concept as much as it is in presentation.

Bloody hell. There are plenty of fantasy novels without gracious amounts of sex and violence.

Although I suppose if you want it to have video game like qualities I guess sticking to Japanese children's fiction is best.

Huh, thought we were talking about their television adaptations.

After all, the recommendations from Song of Ice and Fire are starkly different than those for Game of Thrones. Generally, it's the same people recommending them, but for vastly different reasons (well, for a lot of the same reasons but highlighting different qualities).

No, we're talking about Netto's fetish for reading poorly translated, choppy and often incomplete light novel series.

Only real plus to reading most of them is the ability to laugh at filthy secondaries during anime adaptations although he doesn't seem to do that.

Huh.

In that case, I'd disagree about the sex selling in the case of LNs and Fiction (in generally, really; East or West). The idea is a constant, but boobs don't transcend text, and you don't really need to pander to sell a random reader a book- just a good concept or a nice cover (or, in the case of LNs, pictures).

TL;DR No one reads thoughtful analysis and arguments nowadays so just ignore this.

Well it is just a difference in perspectives I guess. I enjoy reading them, hence I read it.
And I don't see why there's any reason to say more than that.

Really, Netto, you don't have to defend your reasons for enjoying LNs. If you like 'em, by all means- it's not like anyone's going to stop you. You like what you like, there isn't anything else to it.

Not that I have anything against the analysis of why people read fan translated Light Novels, but it really is better to just handwave this stuff rather than to go on a full-on defense.

I know that. But its just my personality to go into explaining why I believe the things I do and try to have a meaningful discussion on the topic. When I "get into" the discussion it's hard for me to stop until I've laid out my arguments to the other side. So its kind of saddening for me when people just ignore such points since it feels like a waste.

Though nowadays I do consciously try my best to walk away from arguments or avoid them entirely since its the Internet. This personality trait of mine was certainly much worse back in 2009-2011 where I developed a reputation for being too engaged in things in the old Other Chat section. Hence why I am much more inactive nowadays in PC. There really isn't much to say if you are actively trying to not get into a discussion or will just be ignored.

So in what territory do spoilers of the new DBZ movie belong in? Cause there's something I'd looove to get opinions on.

If you're talking about what I think you are, I don't think it counts as a spoiler, only because it's been publicized in magazines and sites. That said, people here might not know and, honestly, I wish I hadn't found out about it either- I really wish they'd left the surprise for the movie. So I'd spoiler tag it.

And I gotta say, I like it. Love the fantastically ridiculous name name and love the appearance. Surprisingly, fans have been pretty approving of it.

Well it still has a strong-ish following and people eat up everything Dragon Ball.

Spoiler:

I honestly see no reason to watch the movie anymore.

I think its cause of how over the top it is. Toriyama obviously said "screw it" when it came to creativity, and just going with the flow of that mentality makes it work.

I wouldn't say that. Being a Dragon Ball fan, myself, I can say without a doubt that Dragon Ball fans are the absolute worst. GT aside, they're nitpicky as hell and Academy Award Mode Frieza, SSG Goku, Buu, Cell, regular Frieza, you name it- they're up for mass criticism and power level analysis up the wazoo. Especially SSG Goku. ESPECIALLY SSG Goku. It's really for that reason that I can like things like this- I'm just not going to be that critical of something that can very easily be enjoyable with either the shift of mindset or a different perspective.
Spoiler:

But yeah, I really wish they'd left the surprise a surprise, I really don't know why- two days before the movie premiered- they needed to promote something that could have otherwise been a special surprise, as if they needed more to entice people to see the movie. They did something similar with the first movie and Goku's Super Saiyan God form, and I just have to wonder why. It's one of very few canon Dragon Ball Z movies and Dragon Ball features post 2010 aren't exactly common, I don't really think they need the publicity.

I literally cannot breathe, well not really but I feel like it. I have 7 episodes of Gurren Lagann left, and it's severely impacting me on a level of emotions I can't even comprehend.

Be sure to watch the movies afterward (though probably not immediately so, I'd give it time), you'll be happy you did.

And, also, I recommend watching the vastly overlooked Parallel Works. I don't know why they're as obscure as they are, but a good number of them are great and interesting pieces that are worth the watch.
