Hy guys, I'm working on my own Pokémon fan-game for a few years already, and now I'm translating it to English and making some improvements before launching it later this year. It has the Johto, Kanto, Orange Islands, and Hoenn region. My question is, do you think I should create a new Pokédex for each region and make all 898 Pokémon available, or use the original games Pokedex and make just 493 Pokémon available?

This is the original Johto Pokédex:

I really like it, but at the same I miss some newest and different Pokémon appearing in the grass. So before making this change I would like to know your thoughts on this! Use the original dexes or new and expanded ones?

    Thanks!

My opinion (which is probably not what most people think, but I don't know) is: put all the official Pokémon.
As long as the fangame doesn't have a whole new Pokédex (like Solar Light), I have trouble playing without the whole cast of Pokémon. Not sure why, probably because it makes me feel like the fangame is "outdated" (no offence intended to creators who don't like putting the whole Pokédex).

I think the biggest factor should be how do you want the game to be played and how much work do you want to put in. The newer pokemon won't be used as much as earlier gens so while I encourage using newer gens, it becomes a lot more work but one compromise would be shrinking the dex from 898 to 500/any number. Deciding what pokemon to cut (insert Dexit noises) can be hard to decide but would make it easier to manage and make your game more unique.

Also there's too many legendary/mythical/ultra beast to give unique events to all of them and not just "lazily" put them in random places. It's a lot of work to do something unique for every legendary when it can feel like optional content.

Thank you guys! I decided to expand the region dexes a bit more to include more Pokémon from other regions, but not all of them for now so I can be able to spend more time building the maps/events/history - maybe after the game is finished I can spend more time working on the complete national dex
