Utaite (歌い手) is a Japanese term for people who cover previously released songs and post them on Nico Nico Douga and YouTube under the utattemita category. The term "utaite" is unique to Nico Nico Douga singers, making it different from Kashu (歌手), which means "singer" in general.
Generally, utaite do cover songs for VOCALOID original songs, anime and game related songs
Occasionally, Utaite may collaborate with each other, forming pairs or groups that they collaborate in.
About a couple of months ago I found out my friend had picked up the hobby of becoming a Utaite. She was always a quiet one so I was really glad that she was able to find something that she was incredibly passionate about.
I had no clue about the whole Utaite thing and more or less had no clue how much work and effort utaites really put in too all their songs. Recently my friend grouped together with a couple of other utaites to form a chorus and have started entering chrous battles (battles against other chrous utaite groups) and honestly, the amount of work they placed into every entry, both in mixing, art and animation is pretty inspiring - so I've been supporting them a lot (and while at it learning more about the utaite world).
From what I can recall, a couple of popular seiyuus used to be utaite on Nico Nico before they became voice actors - can't remember who though, but I thought that was pretty cool.
Does anyone listen to any utaite or chorus groups? Have any favourites utaite, songs or even chrous groups?
Posted it at some point, but this the group my friend Odin is in:
Some other groups/ other covered songs I've really enjoyed:
