  • I found out about them, and I want one so badly now.

    Goddamn you, history teacher…

You know what I like about them? They just magically seem to play music. Of course, CDs do too, but what makes them so darn magical is that you expect something that's supposed to be hand-cranked, pushed along, and need to press the needle down with all your might. However, what you get is basically a naked CD player. it's just so coooooooooooool

And what makes them even cooler is that you have fullllllll control over the speed - you can reverse, speed up, slow down, scratch, whatever the records, and they follow your commands like a servant. If record and CD players were like people, the record is like a slave, while the CD is like an entitled bratty child. That also makes it so fun, because that's what you expect from a machine. Full submission to the master!!!!! I also may have problems.

  • I feel really old from this. I mean, records were still before my time but my dad listened (and repaired his record player recently, so listens) to vinyl frequently. They don't seem any more mysterious or magical than CDs to me. :P

There's a store here in Monterey called Vinyl Records and the owner has been pestering me and offering me a vinyl record player for some time now. It can even read them into MP3 files. Given the cool stuff he has on vinyl, I'm tempted to take up his offer every single day.

  • My housemate has a turntable. She says vinyl has a "warmer" sound, so even though it's old it's in some ways the best format for some recordings.

  • well, that makes sense, because while CDs can jerk their magnetic plates in the audio parts and not ruin itself, vinyl will make rounder turns because it's grinding away at the sound wave grooves, which makes it rounder.

    and yes it certainly is.
