Two people was the death toll, the police officer and the person that people are assuming was the shooter himself.
 
Wow. It's sad to hear how far people can go with this stuff. What do they expect to gain by this, you know?
 
I can't believe to understand why someone would go as far as shooting someone to solve their problems, but I hope this never happens again and everyone at Virginia Tech I hope you can stay safe for now on. :(

Even so, there is literally a vast amount of ways that a person can kill another, even if they do so with their bare hands - if one way sounds unfeasible, they'll look at another way to kill someone. It's the people themselves that result in murders, not guns by themselves.

Yes, but having the power to easily kill someone with a gun may influence a person, making them more likely to do it... and if there are other people near by, or if they're planning to kill more than one person at a time, it makes it so much easier and faster to do it.
 
All I have to say is that this is really upsetting for several reasons.

1) A human was killed. Beyond that a veteran, police office,r and father of five children was killed.

2) There was no apparent motive, or at least a "logical" one. Although it is a bit coincidental that today Virginia Tech Representatives were in Washington, where they were appealing a fine ($50,000) that was placed on them for the 2007 Virginia Tech Shootings. Did the shooter want to make a statement that Virginia Tech needed to pay? If so, he punished the wrong person and took extreme measures; he only encouraged needless violence against those who are trying to protect students.

3) I think this was his statement because he killed himself, as if he was a martyr. Sick people like this represent the ugliest side of humanity - not heroes.

This is all going off the assumption that the second man found dead was the shooter.
 
Well, the other person hasn't been confirmed as the shooter.

Until then, for all we know, the shooter could have killed that person too and left the gun.
 
Yeah, heard it all on the news...really makes me wonder about the direction that humanity is heading today. I mean, a child and one other were killed and that mofo fled the scene... this and so much more. Majority of the killings and crimes that have occurred this year... I'm worried. Seriously worried...

No children were killed. It was the police officer and one other man.
 
Gosh, this is just horrible and for this to happen at a school that's already gone through something similar. It's just a shame and really makes you wonder why people do the things they do.
 
i just wanted to add that there is more transparency, and more media coverage of killings, rapes, and everything in between then ever. Don't let these stories, although they are terribly tragic, convince you that this is a common occurrence or that there are a lot of people out there that are like this. The vast majority of people would never raise a firearm, let alone a fist to someone in order to solve a conflict. Just keep in mind that the U.S., depending on where you are is either somewhat safe to very safe. People think that our morals and our humanity is going down the tubes after these type of news stories, but i think that compared to any other period of our history, we are the most accepting people that resort to the least amount of violence. Just because we have less violence and prejudice, it doesn't mean that either have completely dissipated, nor should we expect them to ever fully dissipate, but there will always be some room for improvement.

I know it's not the place, but you'll find a lot of people - myself included - don't agree with the death penalty at all. Life sentence - fine. No-one has the right to take life away. That goes both ways, otherwise people are just lowering themselves to the criminals' level.

It most certainly has worked. If my memory serves me correctly, the Port Arthur Massacre was the last high-profile gun-related and that was just before the laws came in.

I certainly feel safe that nearly no-one has guns. To say that guns aren't to blame is a little naive. While technically true, they give people a lot more power than they otherwise would. I'd like to see how successful the perpetrator would have been using his own fists. Hell, even a knife is easy to control in comparison.

I hope no-one on PC is affected by this.

True. Overall, the rates of these events have been going down. Yet media coverage keeps going up.

Just fear mongering on the media's part.
