Currently I have spotted a virus named NeverEverNoSanity destroying PHPBB forums in an epidemical scale. During a Google search I saw that the virus had over 19 generations now and one of the forums lost all data, including about 11,000 oekaki files.

I understand that this forum is not PHPBB, but anyone that moderates such a forum, please update to PHPBB 2.0.11 ASAP.

Apparently it has hit a heck lot of sites. Below is the search URL I made in Google. Put it in your address bar, and just take a look at this horribly long blacklist. (Any site with the name "This Site is Defaced!")

JK posted this an hour ago.But nice info.My uncle,is a computer virus finder/killer.I'll tell him about this virus.

... O_O i thought that this thread was gonna give me a virus, but i had the balls! (and an anti virus mac XD)

I was just looking at the list,

And some of them are major sites im guessing like Kid Rock's site and Mens Health (A Major Magazine)

This isn't a virus I want to mess with <@_@>

It doesn't infect single systems, rather it goes for forums and wipes them out completely.

man, dose anyone achualy know what this virus dose?

    sounds bad though, real bad...

Not only does it whipe out the forum, but everything that is included in the server.

I urge everyone not to update there phpBB but to delete them and just switch to another type of forum, though like many people have said the hackers can just edit it to target other types of forums.

However i am sure vBulliten is working on a patch as we speak, just in case.

I've passed this on to all the forums that I know of. Your turn. ;)

    Fixen,

Yes, we must all do our part you are completely correct. This is so horrible, because a majority of Webmasters don't rouitenly do backups which can cause devasting effects.

It's good to update phpBB to 2.0.11, but that's not the source of problem. You need to update your PHP to 4.3.10 or PHP 5. PHP has an expliot that the virus uses. Any PHP-based forum, vB, IPB, openBB, phpBB, YaBB, SMF, will expliot this problem. It's only that the writers of the virus did phpBB because it's the most popular forum. The writers of this virus could very well write the samething for vBullitien or any other PHP-based forum.

See my link up there? It goes for pages and pages. Google found 293 victims. I bet that's not all.

Well, it isn't so commercially affecting to be such a spot in the public eye.

It will be once it's rewritten to take out vBulletin, as bigger forums use that.

This should go in Webbies... and there's already a thread dedicated to this. ~_~

Oh, and just to let you know, updating to PHP 4.3.10 won't help. =3~ I found that out personally.

    Uh-oh Spaghettios! This doesn't look good. OO;;; I sure hope we can get some sort of super-ultra force field in case that virus comes to PC. I would hate for PC to crash again. ;-;

The problem we have here is a worm (which means extremely fast spread), and it can affect forums. A lot of them. A worldwide shutdown might be coming if we don't get a fix soon...or physically terminate the sending servers. If that happens, the news will report it.

In essential, this could grow to something similar to the ILoveYou worm, or even CodeRed (but that one failed).

Hehe... the phpBB forum I had on my space got me attacked, and I haven't allowed them to open it back up... >(

You got hit too? According to one of the admins in a forum I went to, it uses Google to search for vulnerable PHPBB forums. I only hope that the new 2.0.11 version fixed whatever hole that was. Otherwise, a recode could destroy the ones that escaped.

    [EDIT UPDATE]
I just found this site. It's a list, named "Defacements on Hold", listing the worm's next targets.
    https://zone-h.org/defacements/onhold

It looked like this is a collaboration of hacking groups, and I don't want to know what size that is.
