"Friendly" is not the first word I would use to describe them...
But I'd say the group from XY were presented as friendlier, on the whole. Some of them travelled together, and it was clear tht Game Freak did attempt to create a sense of camaraderie between you and them by having you do things with them - exploring that first forest with them around, watching fireworks with Shauna, etc. Lillie and Hau never felt like travelling companions to me...just constant thorns in my side that stopped me from doing anything. Even finising the game, it turned out.
Lillie was guarded at first, but she turned out to be a really nice character and possibly my favourite of all the companions so far. Hau was great, he was consistently friendly throughout and shown up at the right times imo. Overall I'd say yeah, these two were friendly for best part of the adventure! Both miles better than the "rivals" we had in XY..
I don't know...put all the intrusiveness of the XY rivals together and you have one Hau. I'm not sure if that's better or worse, given that he still didn't have much of a personality to speak of. The XY rivals were too much because there were too many of them...Hau was too much because he just wouldn't bugger off.
I think we're confusing friendliness with usefulness, though...Hau was cheery, but he always seemed like more of a rival type to me; he wasn't confrontational or antagonistic, but he WAS out to win. Tierno and Shauna were both far friendlier than Hau, even if they weren't as helpful. That said, Shauna DOES give you a second starter, IIRC...
Either way, if we're going by personality, none of them have enough to really lay much foundation.
I didn't mind Hau, Lillie, or Gladion too much. They never really annoyed me, and I honestly don't attribute the obnoxiously long cut scenes and tutorials to being the fault of their characters, it's the game designers fault for railroading all the cut scenes the way that they did. Lillie, Hau, and Gladion were relatively interesting characters.
Lillie definitely had the deeper and more complex character design and progression. It was fun watching her grow and learn alongside of the player. Considering that her character had to deal with some traumatic experiences that forced her to not trust people, it was heart warming to watch her grow a trusting bond with the player over time.
I genuinely enjoyed Hau's carefree attitude and lifestyle, and that was also reflected in how he battled as well. He always felt to me like a character who is just here for the ride and doesn't worry about where it takes him.
Gladion is probably my favorite Edgelord. I also felt like the game was constantly making fun of Gladion in really round about ways and I laughed quite a few times because of Gladion. One of my favorite moments in playing Moon...
Spoiler:
... was the scene where the player defeats Nanu who then reveals himself as the island's Kahuna, and during Nanu's monologue after being defeated, Gladion just has this hilarious dumbstruck look on his face during the dialogue, like he's thinking to himself, "HE JUST DEFEATED THE KAHUNA! WHO THE **** IS THIS GUY?"
I seriously laughed so freaking hard during this cut scene just because of the look on his face, it was like a moment of Gladion realizing he's not as hardcore as he thinks he is. Gladion overall was a cool rival and definitely had some shining moments in the game.
