I named myself Spankz.
My rival was going to be Alfred. Then I noticed an extra letter slot. Hence, he became Alfredo.

I was tempted to call myself Bethanj like I did in the original Silver, and was keen to name my rival ???; I have a friend who did this once.
Instead, I'm now called Bethan, my rival is called Tyrone, my Feraligatr is called Fergo, my Lugia is called Shutter and my various other Pokemon are too numerous to list!

My player name usually varies, what ever name I hear on TV I will tend to use.
Rival I always keep him as Gary, don't know why, great rival name.
As for Pokemon I don't give them nicknames. My only exception on a few games is when I catch two Meowth (one female and one male) - I usually give them nicknames of various cat cartoon characters from movies or TV shows, or online comics. My usual nicknames are Xandra (for the female) and Ch'marr (for the male)
Just remember, the only time I give 80% of Pokemon different names was when I couldn't get the German language ROM to work I gave them all nicknames with their German names - I tried to do same with a French but some names were a little too long to fit.

Askepios is a song title, Kermit is a famous frog, UTurnMeOn is a pun, Petilil is what I would rather have, Ephixa did awesome dubstep Zelda songs, and Casino was something I RNG'd while staying in a casino.
