Ok guys, please stop using metal as a comparison to rap...Especially Screamo, that's even worse than most rap.

Rap is definetely a kind of music, it's just that the rappers themselves, as far as we know, aren't necessarily musicians. Their share of the songs they just talk fast, which is rhythm. Not tones in succession, instead of singing which takes a WHOLE lot more work to do well. (It's just that most musicians today don't do it properly)

Now I will agree that the rapper, Akon actually can sing some. When he sings in his songs they sound good, such as the song "Don't Matter". I have great respect for Usher as a fantastic dancer. But I have much more respect for Steve Perry (former singer of the rock band Journey), as one of the greatest singers ever.

A lot of rappers suck. Simple but true. They think that just because they can throw a bunch of sentences together that rhyme, they can be considered a rapper. Not true. You need to have the voice, the flow, the style and the intelligence to be a good rapper.

Also being able to rap about topics other than sex, drugs and guns is incredibly important to me. I hate all of that generic crap. Which is one of the many reasons why Eminem is the most successful artist of this decade. Most of his songs stick to a subject or storyline and even raps about important things in his life and in his past.

You clearly don't listen to much rap music. If you actually listen, you can understand almost every word unless it's a crazy fast rapper like Twista. And there are heavy metal bands that just just scream down a microphone, how is that any better?
Fail. I Believe I've heard enough Rap music to say what I said. Still trying to figure out where Heavy Metal comes into This though at all =/

For those that are questioning weather or not it is music lets look up that term on the trusty Merriam Webster's Dictionary:

So lets do the breakdown comparing modern rap:
1 a - No
1 b - 1.5 / 3 Yes, No, Maybe
2 a - No, not for me.
2 b - No
3 - Nope
4 - Nope

Now lets average that out...
The Math: .5 /2 = .25 /4 = 0.0625

So rap is 6.25% music. Yes it has music but it's a pretty pathetic amount if I do say so myself. Even if you turned that lone maybe and rounded up we are still only talking about 8.25% here.

Alright so maybe unlike me you find rap agreeable lets recalculate still rounding up:
The Math: .66 /2 = .33 +.5 = 0.2075

Even if you find it agreeable it still end up just under 21%. Again not even a quarter music.

Hmph. I'm not gonna believe some fake statistics you looked up at some site.

Rap is music.

Anything people can listen to and enjoy is music.

Don't bring math into this, it was not needed.

The only reason you people say rap ain't real music is because you don't like it.

I'd bet that if ya'll really liked rap, I'd never see "RAP ISNT REAL MUSICCCC!!!!OENONOEN1e!e!e!e!" posted.

I bet another reason you guys don't like rap is because it's different. It's a change of pace. Not what you're used to.

Get this: You'll never have a legit reason not to like rap unless you actually listen to it. A lot of you listen to a couple words in a song, and assume all the artist's songs are about said words.

What Akon said in "I Wanna Love You" does not mean at all that all his songs are about sex. Most of them on his CD Konvicted happen to NOT be about sex. So shut up about him, you couldn't do better than he can anyway.

Well if it makes you feel better in my History of Music class we actually studied Rap... just none of the stuff anyoneone would ever listen to today. Run DMC, Public Enemym etc. the real innovators.

That certainly says more than the way we treated disco & modern pop. Ohhhhh how my professor loathed disco and the modern so called 'assembily-line' pop music.

lol, you know a thread is about semantics when people quote dictionary definitions to make their point.

Modern popular or mainstream rap IS becoming a new genre and IS characterized by simulated music, explicit lyrical content, lack of technicality and recurring covering of already popular instrumentation. That is why many people generalize rap and don't agree with it. You can't change that. That is what many of us don't consider it real music.

Now, the kind of rap you listen to might not be nearly as mediocre as that, but at least you know my point now. You asked what people have against rap in general; that is.

Problem I have in rap is the theme it employs sex, money, drugs and killing people. You also obviously do not need an talent to be a rap artist either. I can listen to rap all day and my ears would shriek at their monotonous voices.

I don't like pointless rap that has no meaning and is totally superficial. I listen to some rap, Eminem, more meaningful songs. I also listen to rock and alternative, so it s possible to like both.

1: You're an idiot. Why, you ask? Because not all rap is about that. You need to get some ****ing info before you try to stereotype anything.

2: Yes, you do need talent. You don't see record companies picking random people off the street and making them rappers, do you?!

Give me a rhyming dictionary and a computer with some music software, and a crash course in using it and I bet a could churn out a half decent rap song.
