What do you look for before watching an anime?

    Some people look to see if the art is good. While others prefer a good storyline or if it has good reviews. My question to you is, what do you look for before watching an anime?
     
    The genre. If it's a combination of comedy, romance, and school, I directly download the show and watch. After watching a good amount of episodes, I judge accordingly; either drop the anime or continue it. The storyline in my preferred genres is stale and similar in most of the shows hence why I don't consider it beforehand. The art, while obviously an important aspect to some, does not stop me from watching a show regardless of its standard.
     
    I prefer anime with a good storyline as well as good characterization.
    I also prefer anime which isn't filled to the brim with fanservice (as in half naked characters every episode, or something similar), but still has a moderate amount.
     
    I'm pretty picky.

    I look to see what it's production quality is, who's making it, what genre(s) it fits into, if it's an adaptation, if the character designs and style are appealing, if it has a good reputation (I would look at the plot, but I don't like spoilers), and lastly I look to see if it has a fanservice feel to it. Fanservice vibe + a style I don't like is usually enough to kill a series for me before I even give it a chance.
     
    First thing I look at is the art. If it's really ugly, I can't even start. I also usually check out what my friends tell me to, since they always keep up with everything new. I value their opinions a lot so I'll trust their judgement without much thought. Since I like most genres, or at least one show in each one, I'll give almost any show a fair run.

    If there's any chance I might like it I'll try. But it's not like shows I like are hard to come by. XD

    This, except I don't really care if it's an adaptation or not.

    And number of episodes usually comes into play. I don't want to get myself hooked on something with episodes numbering in the 50s or 100s. :P 13 episodes is just right for me but if something is good enough I'll stick with it until ~26. Plus, I'll be more likely to try out an anime if it has less episodes. Something that only looks mediocre will get a try if it's short whereas the same anime with tons of episodes won't get more than a second glance from me.
     
    I don't really look for anime. I just judge from word of mouth, and give it a shot if others say it's good.
     
    Usually it's just the art I judge, there's just some that aren't the easiest on your eyes..
     
    Genre + art + year.
    Genre - Wouldn't watch genres I hate, would I?
    Art - I want to watch anime with nice animation and not with some crappy one :/
    Year - Yeah I do choose according to year :D I don't like old ones because they have that crappy animation I mentioned =D
    Though I don't like the newest ones as well :D So I need something between :D
     
    It depends what mood I'm in, If I'm awake I'd rather watch something that actually requires some thought whereas if I'm a bit out of it I'd rather watch cute girls doing cute things in cute ways.

    Art/animation/other technical stuff is not that important if there's a good story there but I am a bit of an OST fag so if the music is done by someone I respect I will watch not so good sounding shows.
     
    I check to see if any of my friends have watched it before. Or if the art's good.
     
    Genre and art, followed by plot. If it's not in one of my preferred genres, it's going to take a lot to convince me to watch it. Same with the art - I tend to stay away from shows that I find unattractive. Then there's plot... Unless it's a clear-cut mahou shoujo series, I prefer my shows to be down to earth and without the surreal fantasy element. Again, I make an exception to this rule for series like Pretty Cure and Nanoha, where the genre is clearly "magical girls." I'm not one for the regular school setting series that suddenly start involving undead creatures or suspension of reality.
     
    The first thing I always tend to look at is the genre. If the anime fits into a favorable genre, then I will most probably like what it has to offer. Genre is always important, but I try to mix things up a little sometimes, and of course, there are other things worth looking at. Art; but this could vary according to my mood. And plot is always an important aspect as I try to read a few short reviews before I really start watching the show. I happen to be.. picky. :X
     
    I open MyAnimeList's top anime list. Try out each anime starting from the top one. The first three I like I continue watching them. After finishing them, move on to the next three.
     
    Usually, I find out more about the plot first. Then, I find out about what other people think about it. I usually take recommendations from friends and family (it's usually my older sister and her boyfriend giving me recommendations these days >.<) and then if I like it, I just continue it ^.^
     
    Sometimes I just up and go watch the first episode to see if I like the anime, and if I do I continue watching it.

    But usually I check the genre of the show (I usually don't like horrors and excess fanservice [with the exception of PSG, but that's a different thing altogether]), the art style (whether it's tolerable/excellent or not) and I see what my friends/reviews think about it. Sometimes I end up watching not-so-mainstream series so I don't really mind how popular the anime is.
