It's better to start off with one of the old ones. Platinum is unexpectedly hard and may do trouble with trainers. But if you don't care, Platinum is yours!

Platinum isn't much harder. :B

Really, it's all your opinion.
Platinum has a much better storyline, and it's more indepth than D/P, and the difficulty isn't much more.
And, it's got more legends, which can help if you're trying to ~Catch em All~.

I'd advise Platinum.

Thus, I'm closing this, because yeah, you're going to get a lot of input, but really, it's a lot of the same. :[
