What if Ash did wake up on time?

    What if Ash never overslept and got one of the three starters. How do you think the Pokémon series would of played out? Without Pikachu as it's 'Mascot'.

    The idea of it just popped into my head.

    Wasn't his first choice Squirtle? That's probably what he would have picked lol.
     
    His first choice was Squirtle, and honestly I don't think the show might have been too different. If not Squirtle to be the mascot then some other Pokémon just might. Actually it was said that before Pikachu, Ash was supposed to get a Clefairy instead.
     
    Well, he would've been able to get through the first gym very easily, but he may have had a lot more trouble getting through the second gym. Misty's sisters said Ash would've won with Pikachu if he used it from the start, they probably wouldn't have been able to say that with Squirtle.
     
    It might have had a major impact on certain parts of the show. Plot changes would have occured as well as Pikachu not even one of Satoshi's Pokémon.

    It would be difficult to imagine a Generation 1 starter to be the mascot though.
     
    Yeah, he would've gone with Squirtle.. but I bet you Pikachu would've found a way to squeeze it's way into being his main Pokemon somehow. xD; I can just see it happening, for some reason.
     
    He would get Squirtle as stated in the above posts, But Gary got it so he didn't get to, I can't really imagine what it would be like without Pikachu, But hat would be because I am use to Pikachu so much and love Pikachu's actions and personality a lot, but I don't really think their would be much difference, just replacing Pikachu with a Squirtle.
     
    He would have probably still ended up getting Pikachu by catching it.
     
    I do not think he would of had a specific friend pokemon in that case i think he would of just got brand new teams every region starting with a starter lol or so i think
     
    I've just thought, is there a designated day that you can become a Pokemon trainer, or is it on the exact day of your 10th birthday, meaning 4 people in Pallet Town were born on the same day, in the same year? I can't remember if they explained that. But if it is an actual day, then perhaps Oak should've known there would be 4 trainers since there would have to be preparation for the day. Perhaps I'm looking too much into this..
     
    Perhaps it just happened to be Ash's ten birthday. But then it would weird that Dawn (and probably May, I never saw the episode she debuted in) along got their Pokémon on their 10th birthday.
    I know some one with the same birthday as me (and born in the same year). The odds of some one being born on the same day (but not the same year) as you in a group of 26 people is 50/50. So with that likihood it doesn't seem too odd that 4 people share the same birthday. Who knows, the people who picked Charmander and Bulbasuar could of been twins.
    Or perhaps they just happened to get their Pokémon after they were ten.
     
    Well, the series would get really messed up if you know what I mean. If Ash never had Pikachu, he would never have met Misty which in turn triggers more unexpected events since without Misty, the series would go chaos.
    Remember how Pikachu was disobedient at the start to the point that Ash and Pikachu got attacked by Spearows? Well if he had Squirtle/Bulbusaur/Charmander. He wouldn't have been pursued by a flock of Spearows which in turn he gets caught by Mistys fishing rod while trying to run from them in the river.

    This may be a bit confusing but remember, even a tiny change in the past can result in a different future.
