What if Ash did wake up on time?

That's a good factor, of Oak seeing Ash when he was a young kid from Pokémon Forever and making sure he had gotten a Pikachu. Nice use of reference on that one! :)
 
Well, If Ash made it on time, and got the pokemon he's wanted, a squirtle {{or maybe one of the others, if he wasn't first pick, but lets assume squirtle}}, He would have a pokemon that'd stay in its ball, so it wouldn't have been injured in the beginning, and he wouldn't have rushed on Misty's bike, and he wouldn't have Team Rocket on his tail, and He wouldn't have met misty, and he wouldn't have a pokemon to destroy the bike of every ten-year-old girl he comes across,

Or.

He would have a squirtle that refused its ball, riding on his shoulder, a squirtle that destroys every ten-year-old girls bike he comes across, and a squirtle with exceptional power, a squirtle that Jesse and James are after.

the series would be the same, except with a squirtle with the exact same power and personality as Pikachu 8O

Or.

He'd catch Pikachu sometime soon after, and stuff the starter he got in the PC/with prof. oak >:
 
^ I don't think he would have stuffed his starter in with Oak, it wouldn't make much sense seeing as the anime seems to be deeply connected with a trainer's first time Pokémon.

Though, he could have still met Misty except in a different way. For example, it could have been getting late in the show and the temperature was seriously dropping. Squirtle was still being ignorant against Ash, and shoots out a water gun, aiming it a fire site that was being used by Misty. Then they get into an argument or so, and they end up traveling together...or something along those lines. Basically, even if Ash got one of the starters it still would have been possible for him to meet Misty. Even a water gun, flamethrower, or razor leaf (depending on the starter he chose) could have ruined Misty's bike, causnig them to meet up. Just listing the possiblities of it all.
 
Hmm.. interesting points, especially the Pokemon4Ever reference. If Ash didn't get Pikachu, do you think his Team Selection would be based on 'Red' out of the gameboy advance series?

It's a possibility. Actually, if Ash did not get Pikachu, the writers could have actually made the manga the actual anime instead for Ash's journey as 'Red'.
 
This has got to be the best discussion since the Kennedy assassination.

Going back to the 4Ever theory, wouldn't little Sammy Oak encounter Ash with a Squirtle in tow had he woken up on time? Thus he would make sure Ash got Squirtle rather than Pikachu. The way you've been explaining it, its as if Ash goes back in time after meeting Oak and wakes up on time, and Oak must make sure Ash gets Pikachu rather than any other starter.

I don't think he would have abandoned his starter either, but its still a possibility
and unlikely one, but possible >.>

I Also agree with meeting misty statement,
His Squirtle/Bulbasaur/Charmander/Shoe could have easily been just as destructive/powerful as pikachu was xDD
 
The writers could have had many different ways in Ash meeting Misty. Team Rocket could have also still been involved thinking that Ash's starter is Uber strong. xD

I understand Flamethrower burning the bike and Razor Leaf slicing it up, but how would Water Gun wreck a bike? All it does is get wet. Unless it rusts a bit...

Well, if Ash had woken up earlier and had potentially chosen Squirtle,:t007:it would've had a harder time against Raichu (or Blastoise, that's for sure). Also, Ash would have more difficulty beating Misty and an easier time beating Brock. Brock might've stayed at Pewter Gym since the battle could easily have gone Ash's way with a 4x-super effective attack, bringing no real significance to the battle.
Squirtle would also have an easier time defending itself from the Spearow with its shell, so Ash might not need Misty's bike at all and would not need to meet Misty for any real reason.

Squirtle might have a harder time taking down the Spearow flock with only Water Gun, since it isn't super-effective and would not be a simultaneous hit as was the case with Thunderbolt. Maybe Ash's awesome "declaration" scene could still be present in some form, though...

Team Rocket might not see Squirtle's potential for a long time, since Ash probably would have left the Pokemon Center before Team Rocket attacked. Additionally, no Blastoise or Wartortle appears until much later episodes for the Squirtle to prove its worth and power against...

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Squirtle would have more difficulty evading Mewtwo's Poke Balls. Plus, it'd have a much tougher fight against the Blastoisetwo.

In Pokemon 4Ever: Voice of the Forest, Pikachu would be replaced by Squirtle so Prof. Oak could give Ash one in the future, unless Pikachu was destined to be Ash's starter :t025: (which fits better, I guess :))

Pikachu's Goodbye would technically occur in Here Comes the Squirtle Squad!, except it would be "Squirtle's Goodbye" instead. :(

Water Gun would be overrated even more than it is now in the anime, and Thunderbolt would make seldom appearances.

Most likely, we would not have the Pichu Bros., Pichu, Plusle, Minun, or Pachirisu (or Ashachu, for that matter :P Instead we'd have Ashsquirtle?, Ashtortle, or Ashtoise, I guess. :/) Volt Tackle might not exist either. We'd also have Squirtle mini-movies instead of Pikachu ones. However, all of these could occur whether Pikachu was prominent or not.

Squirtle would gain an unfair popularity status in comparison to the other starters. :(

We'd see Squirtle either evolve to Wartortle (or further to Blastoise), or it would repeatedly attempt to evolve and stop once it gains a "level".

Blastoise would not be in Super Smash Bros. 64 (or Melee), Squirtle would be a veteran fighter, and "Pokemon Trainer" in SSB Brawl would need some new starter Pokemon (or other Pkmn, I guess)

Hmm...I guess these are the most major changes I can see, along with what everyone else pretty much said in other posts. Otherwise, the anime's plot would either be similar to the current anime except with more Squirtle, or many key events would be altered.

P.S. And we would not have the classic and awesome "AIM FOR THE HORN" meme, because Rhydon would be KO'd in 2 seconds flat with Water Gun! :t112:
 
Maybe the storyline is gonna be similar to FRLG??
 
I think it would mess up the Anime, I wouldn't like Pokemon because I thought Pikachu looked really cute, and cool when using an attack. So, my life would change dramatically.
 
If Ash woke up on time...

He would have been hit by a truck on his way to Oak's lab, a truck hijacked by Jessie and James no less.
Destiny is a fickle thing huh?
 
Ash would have Squritle.
Ash wouldn't have a Pokemon follow him always.
Ash might have seen a Pikachu Squad instead of a Squritle Squad.
Ash would have left Pikachu at Oak's lab (if he caught one)
Gary would have had Bulbasaur as his starter, not Squritle.
Jessie and James might have not followed Ash.
Brock might have not joined the group.

I'll add more as I think of more.
 
I love how all answers fall along the lines of "team rocket would STFU, brock and misty wouldb't follow blahblahblah"

in the end, the series would just have a squirtle or whatever puttering behind him
just replace all the attacked with water based ones and change the mascot to a squirtle ouo

assuming its squirtle.
Then the games would be, Red, Yellow, and Green, + Special Squirtle Version
 
It'd be cool to see Ash get other pokemon, but I'm so used to seeing Pikachu and its cute yet tough personality I wouldn't bear imagining it!

Anyway, if he did get a bulbasaur, charmander or squirtle, anime creators would probably remove this pokemon from his journey (e.g. we wouldn't see the squad leader super cool squirtle, the aloof but loyal bulbasaur, the adorable charmander and the defiant charizard)....The whole show would be so different.
