Okay but in the add/remove button you can type open and see open office on there but I know it's not the same but Linux is better as you don't fall into the OS hands. You buy a Mac and you fall right into a monoploy. Mac software is the only software you can get for Mac. Mac holds all the power when it come with software you can run on Mac. You buy a Mac and you just gave Mac absolute power over what software you get and how much you pay for it. Linux is far better in that respect. Has you can get software basically from all over the world and form others. Not just Linux.

actually with this logic that you just gave, you would be implying that all Microsoft Windows software is the same. Mac does not make all of the software that runs on a Mac, they sell it, but they do not make it. individual companies like Adobe, Blizzard, and Electronic Arts all make Mac compatible versions of their products. Even Microsoft itself makes Microsoft Office for Mac. Not to be taking a shot at you or anyone for that matter, but the best piece of advise I can give anyone looking to get a new computer/OS is to really do your homework and do the 'Math' to find the right computer for yourself.
Back to my original argument, contrary to popular belief, there actually is many software options out there for Mac, and not all of it is made by Mac. Yes Apple does produce iLife, iWork, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, and many other applications, but really to be honest most of their software products (aside form Aperture, and Final Cut Studio) are really some of the best out there. iTunes is basically unparalleled except by a couple of music programs made for Linux.

Okay but you can't get free software for Mac then. Buy have to buy it.

Pricing isn't really the problem, its what you get with your money that makes all the difference.

Linux is better because you get great software for free.

actually there is a bunch of great free software, like NeoOffice, iLife, firefox, GIMP, plus many more free downloads.

Wait. Are you saying Mac doesn't make you buy software but let get it for free from a 3rd party. So their are a butch of free software for Mac from 3rd party site?

Actually there's free software for pretty much any OS, but yeah, you just got to look around out there an you'll find it. I still haven;t found anything better than iTunes though (I'm happy with iTunes, mind you)

Why does all of my friends who use Mac say it's a monopoly?

I'm not sure why, but I could guess that most of them just haven't looked around lately

I get you. Do you think the next computer I buy should be a Mac?

now for that kind of question the only person who can answer that is yourself. while Macs are the most versatile machines out there (because you could in fact install and run Mac, Windows, or linux by default), but the best advise I can tell you is spend some time researching and find out what you need it for, what you can afford and then weigh the facts you come up with.

Okay. I get ya. Is there a site where I can do research?

Quite a few, my friend. Quite a few.

That should get you started for now, I suppose.

Supertails, DMNT, I really think that we should get this thread back on track and continue discussing our favorite OS, as the title of the topic suggests, and move the debate over which is best, and where to find good info to our PM boxes. OK.

I'm still sticking with Mac OS X myself, I've used others and my preference is Mac. nuff said

Good idea Gerri Shin®. Although you have to admit, debates such as this are inevitable in a thread of this nature. ;)

You have a point and since the thread opened I have learned to appreciate Mac more but I'm still going with Linux as I have used it more.

I say we should all go back to the simple times off windows 2000

stable OS. Sort off. Cheaper. You know you want to go back to it :p

I've been using Linux for a while and I love it. It's safe so I won't ever have to worry about ID thief again
Any OS is only as safe as you make it.
and it's 100 times faster then Windows
Because people bloat Windows.

Seriously. Depending on the Linux distro, if I put a fresh install of Windows on a computer it boots just as fast. *shrugs* People are stupid, that's all.

As you can on a PC, now that we have Intel-based Macs. You could run Mac OS on a PC before that, actually. It just required more hacks.

I pick an OS depending on the application. Gaming? Windows. Programming? Unix-based, without a doubt. I'm more of a Solaris user than a Linux user, but I'm happy with both.

Linux-wise, though? I avoid Ubuntu like the plague. I don't like Debian-based distros in general. Ubuntu's aimed at complete n00bs, hides things away and makes them far more annoying to access/run, and looks ugly. Give me, oh, openSUSE with KDE any day for prettiness - for functionality, that or even Fedora Core or Gentoo (if you can be bothered) or Slackware. Aaron Seigo uses openSUSE. Linus Torvalds dislikes GNOME and picks KDE over it. (I shook his hand, by the way.) That's enough of a recommendation for me. (Don't even mention Kubuntu, it has the ugliest implementation of KDE I've ever seen. I don't know how they did it.)

How do you bloat windows? It must be easy because that thing runs like slugs in no time. You probably have to install that thing once ever 3 months or something just to have run normally for year. You only have to install Linux once and it's fast for the life of the computer. Windows has like 5000 times more virus then all other OS. What does that tell you?

How is Solaris compared to Linux because I was going to try it but Sun never answered my Email?
