3rd Gen What language is this?

Okay so, my friend gave me a gba game for free and naturally, I put it in my gba.
It looks like emerald in Japanese, but he says it is Chinese (he is Chinese)

It might well be Chinese. The Japanese kanji writing system is, after all, derived from Chinese in the first place, so it's very likely the two will look awfully similar in places.
