Hey, I just started playing pokemon HG, but I don't know which pokemon are essential for completing the game without too much problems.

right now, i have a lvl 10 cyndaquil and a lvl 10 hoothoot, do I need to change hoothoot for a pidgey? should I have picked a different starter? what type of pokemon do I still need? seeing that hoothoot is psychic/flying, i suppose I don't need kadabra. please help (:

PS: I do not have the option to trade pokemon or recieve pokemon from other games like diamond or pearl.

To be honest - there's no set Pokemon team or the like which are 'essential' for completing the game easily - as long as you don't skip battles and train your team enough, and keep your moveset varied (so don't have 3-4 fire-type moves on your Cyndaquil for example by the time you hit the E4) then you'll be fine - go for Pokemon that interest you really is what I recommend. All the starters are fine although Cyndaquil/Totodile do give you a somewhat easier time with gyms and all in the first part of the game. Note also that HootHoot is fine (when it evolves it's fairly defensive) but it's only Normal/Flying, not Psychic. It'll do about as well as the Pidgey line for you so no need to worry about that either.

I will mention a few specific Pokemon e.g. Heracross (headbutt trees in Azelea once you get that move), Mareep line, Drowzeee line, Dratini line (game corner if you want or after 8th badge for one with Extremespeed - would need some training), Swinub/Jynx/Lapras (latter google to find out how to get that/help thread sticky), Magmar, Tangela line, Zubat line, Poliwag line, stuff from the safari zone (magnemite line, murkrow line), the Gyarados you will encounter later... tbh the list goes on and on. Plus there's thee stuff you can get from the Pokewalker courses!

If you want a team rate later when you have more of an idea who you will use and what moves as well try the In-game Team Help section, but as there's nothing much to rate here and all, I'll close.
