One could always pin things to the start menu, to the same effect, since before Windows 7, so that's what I still do.

I have nothing on my Taskbar, because I use Launchy. Probably one of my best computer decisions ever.

I have internet explorer, play music, google keep, pocket, word 2013, powerpoint 2013 and excel 2013 pinned to my taskbar. Play music, keep and pocket are ie apps. Very helpful if I want to listen to music via all access in the background.
