when pokemon evolve....

    I know they Change what pokemon they are, but do there personailitys change and do they understand or rember who they were before, Take ash's Piachu if he evolved in to Raichu, would pikachu rember who he was before?

    Just wondering
     
    I think their personalities stay the same, and they remember what Pokemon they were before, but I'm not exactly sure. I'm just guessing. Sorry I couldn't help much.
     
    Nope, they don't change. Their memories and personalities are completely intact, otherwise they'd become disobedient from not knowing why they were where they were and why they were being made to battle and all that...they would have no memories so they would have to act on instinct, and since they would not remember any past experiences with their trainer they would feel no obligation to do anything that the trainer wants them to do. Besides, we have seen from the anime that personality traits are carried over when a pokemon evolves. Take Ash's Chikorita, for example. It was still overly affectionate toward Ash when it evolved. Ash's Pidgeotto was still loyal and serious about battling when it evolved into Pidgeot, doing what Ash wanted it to do even up to the time when Ash released it...there are a few other examples, but this ought to be sufficient information for now.

    the first thing that came to mind wen i read this was charmeleon:P.
     
    Chikorita is a good example of how Pok?mon's personalities don't change after evolution, she was still extremly giddy over Ash as a Bayleef the same when she was a Chikorita, but poor thing just didn't realize straight after evolving how much stronger she was so I believe after evolving it takes time for a Pok?mon to get used to it's new stronger power but still retain all it's personality and memories from it's previous form.
     
    It does say in the extremely old Pokemon Handbook that Pokemon stay the same during evolution. It's just thier outer appearence that changes.

    I'll take the official's word for it!!
     
    And Charmeleon did change personalities when it evolved, but didn't lose who it was when it was a Charmander. It was just cocky because it was so powerful, which would be natural for anyone who gained such immense strength in an instant...it was going through a phase, as it did learn to respect Ash in the Orange Islands, so the change wasn't permanant.

    not to mention stats, power, movepool, or maybe even type ;p

    but in terms of the inner self, there is no change... it remembers everything and most likely has the same personality. Although some argues that Charmeleon was disobedient in comparison to Charmander, it did remember who Satoshi was as a Charizard eventually. Plus its first battle as a Charmeleon is against a Paras who can't even withstand a tiny power-nerfed water gun... pride is scarred for life ;p It evolves to help Satoshi win battles, and the first task it got was "please lose to this pathetic bug who has a x4 weakness against your STAB move." Well in situations like that, Charmeleon may mistaken Satoshi to think that Charmeleon is useless or something... until as a Charizard when it realizes that Satoshi still cares for it deeply, the misunderstanding between the two is most likely the reason for Charmeleon/Charizard's disobeidence.
     
    The memory stays I think.

    Though they might feel surprised when they found their trainer a lot shorter than they remembered.

    Heh, I bet!

    I do believe that everything everyone said was true, but I still don't know about one relationship. Remember when Jessie traded Jame's Victreebel for a Weepinbel? (James had no voice in this decision) The Weepinbel was all sweet (since it is a female version, I think), but it evolved later in that same episode, and became quite violent, just like Jame's Victreebel.
     
    I just saw an episode, at the end Ash's charmander turned into Charmelion and they hugged at the end, so pokemon only hug people they know (i think)!
