Someone today told me that none have been found yet. I can guess somewhere in America for most. There must be 1 hiding somewhere in the UK. Mew will be hardest and will probably be somewhere in the world people rarely go.

Legendaries haven't been released yet so unfortunately they aren't hiding anywhere for now :( They'll be released in a later update, most likely in the form of a big event of regional distribution like with the event Pokémon in the main series games, but for now we have to make do without.

If legendary Pokémon are not part of some future Niantic/Pokémon Company hosted event, I would be very, very surprised.

The whole point of Pokémon GO is to make people go outside, have fun, and socialize if possible. An event would certainly accomplish all of that.

The only concerns would be region, safety, accessibility, etc. But I'm sure there's a team in place somewhere that's getting paid to figure it out.

This sums it up pretty well. I imagine it'll probably be something generic like "Mewtwo will appear at several GAME stores throughout the country" and basically just rip-off the main series events entirely. I never bother making the trip for the event Pokémon like that usually but for Go I think I'll be happy to - especially if it's something awesome like an Articuno.

Ugh... you know I'm not a big fan of idea to make some kind of events to catch legendaries. Especially if they're like one time only chances. Also they'd have to have these event's pretty much everywhere. I'm not going to travel to another country just to get a pokemon... I could easily go a 100-200km within my country if I have the time, but it would cost too much to go abroad.

maybe add a "legendary egg" with 100km hatch rate :D

I've also heard of competition events between the teams, not sure how it'd work, most gyms being held at the end of the event or something maybe? and the winning team receives the opportunity to catch their team mascot or maybe an egg?

Granted that was pure speculation I was reading but something like that would be pretty cool I must say, though it may be hard to pull off.

Highly doubt that will happen for one reason:

    Hotheaded people.

People who are overly competitive can end up duking it out with fists if they can't get what they want. There's a good reason why the Pokémon we encounter all show up for everyone in the area (minus incense ones) and everyone gets his/her own chance to capture it. Imagine it's first come first serve? A wild Raichu showed up at the lure? Oh, only five are available before it disappears? Someone late to the party and bitter might break your phone.

As much confidence as I have in organizing a group of high level players, I am not comfortable with the fact that so much would be put on the line with no guarantees. At least with a public event, all you need to do is physically be there.

Ahahah I like this idea. Watch the first person's egg finally hatch 2 months after they're released XD

That's interesting, where did you hear about that? I feel like that could have been a good idea but with how dominant certain teams are compared to the others it'd feel a tad unfair to anyone in Instinct especially. I think it'd be a lot more interesting to make it a competition or an event where you actually have to achieve something to find the legendary but I can only really see it being a GAME distribution thing like normal for the time being.

And that's a fair point. I don't think that it will happen either as it could get really contested and heated very quickly with most likely some people getting hurt, which is so unfortunate that there are people who get that much into the game.

Honestly, I can't remember the link, It was one of those things where you start on article and then start following links and next thing I know I'm reading a speculation article about this idea. He didn't have much backing himself up, it was more like "this would be a pretty cool idea if it happens and adds a little bit of competition to it all as well as team camaraderie"

I like the idea of completing and event though with some kind of achievement, like catching 250 Pidgey in X amount of time or hold a Gym for at least 12 hours consecutively (though thats beginning to become easier, at least in my area #TeamMystic), or events similar to that and the more difficult the event, the more rare the Pokemon egg/Pokemon you can receive

Niantic revealed at Comic-Con this weekend that the Legendary Pokemon will be added in game in the next several months (along with the other generations! yay!). I'm assuming like in all Pokemon games they will be distributed via an event. In the announcement video, there's a scene where a bunch of people gather at the same place at once to catch a Mewtwo, so I think they might be distributed only at a specific location where you have to actually go there to get it.The game is very location based and uses a lot of real life monuments and attractions for Pokestops, so maybe they'll be distributed at the most important monument in a town or city? For example, in New York City, you'll have to go to the Empire State Building or like the Statue of Liberty to get Mewtwo. That or they'll just distribute the legendarys the same way as the other games.A place like Gamestop, GAME or some other video game store. Either way you're probably gonna have to go out to get the Legendary Pokemon.

I heard someone say a Zapdos was found at Disney world. I can only assume if there are or will be legendary's they will be a pain to catch
