I think that one way its possible is through government funding. Gym Battles and Tournaments are very popular and they would generate alot of money, through food sales, ticket sales and also entry fees for participants.
With that money it could be used as a small income enough to support trainers if they are actively battling although if the trainer is not very good and not getting badges in a suitable time. the government would cut their funding. :(
Just look at all the big wages professional sport players are paid in the real world.

I wondered about the same thing too. If such means of income actually existed, think of all the trainers Ash would challenge, not to mention all the different PokeBalls, and stat-boosting vitamins he could buy. Anything for him to win a Pokemon League (for once)!

In the game you get money for batting so I guess this could be it. They would find most of their food loose or be given it though.

I don't think they have money nor do they need it. I think Pokémon Centers offer free supplies for Trainers. Who knows. Brock and Cilan were always pulling things out of their bags that apparently have infinite volume. Maybe they packed plenty of stock before heading out on their journeys. But I don't remember seeing any episode when we actually see Ash or a friend buying something with currency.

Meowth sneaks into their camps in the night when they're sleeping and uses payday to create an infinite amount of funds so ash and co can continue on their journey and give team rocket more attempts at capturing their pokemon and ash and co are too ignorant to really notice the infinite money that comes from nowhere.

This makes me think, imagine if football were government funded.

I think their parents give them monies for their journey. Like going to college. Tuition and food. It's probably not all that expensive to be in a Pokemon journey anyways, and its reasonable to think Pokemon Center services are public.

I think they get everything for free, for real, who stays in a hotel for free IRL, I think only in games you have Pokedollars

Unless the hotels are homeless shelters, and in the anime pokemon trainers are all homeless who are having to fight for food and money to survive. all the events in the anime are hallucinations of a starving or diseased ash

You don't see them pay for it, but in the fist ten episodes, Misty leaves Ash with the bill at a restaurant.

I can't believe I remember this, but: in DP039 "Steamboat Willies"/"Pikachu's in Charge" Brock specifically asks for somewhere that sells Pokemon food supplies and an old man replies there is a Pokemart near them, so they go there and buy some stuff. So Ash and co. do have money...the plot thickens.

I imagine though that Pokemon centre's are funded through taxes like the NHS (because who needs human hospitals...Pokemon are more important! XD) and that they give out meals etc to Pokemon and trainers.

I'm assuming that Ash & co get their money in much the same way as player characters do in the games. As for exchanging, I believe funds are transmitted 100% electronically. Any show of physical cash is limited and put in just for show (I remember an episode where Ash dug into his pockets, and complained he had no money.)

What if the pokedex was something like their wallet, keeping track of money as well as pokemon? Makes it easy and makes the pokedex important to keep.

I generally believe they have as much money as the plot of that specific episode demands for. Being a show aimed towards young children, it's not something the writers want the viewers to think about, just like the GS Ball.

I always believed that for people that wanted to compete in tournaments and collect badges, the Pokemon League is some sort of government funded entity, and trainers/gym leaders recieve stipends..

Fruits and vegetables don't require money, as they could grab from trees and stuff them into their backpacks when travelling. As for other things, I'm not too sure about that... though, I do like Wobbu's idea of Pokémon Centers providing trainer supplies. :b
