Where in the source code can I edit or remove the “PLING” that occurs after every ‘a’ button action?

I love pokemon music but the sfx are usually terrible. Starting a rom hack now and i really want to get rid of this or change it to a more subtle sound. Working on emerald.

An easy and painless way to go about it is to open sound\songs\midi\se_select.mid with a program like Audacity, Ctrl+A to select the entirety of the track, Del key to delete it, then File -> Export -> Export MIDI, and then build a ROM.

Keep in mind that you might want to preserve the sound effect in X or Y place. In that case, you'd have to add the muted version as a new track and replace the usages of SE_SELECT in the codebase with the constant of the new, muted version on a case-by-case basis.
