    Hey guys

Im brand new to TCG so i have a question.
Why is that the card game series and the video games share the same name? For example sword and shield cards vs sword and shield games why are they both called sword and shield?
They are 2 seperate games arnt they?...
Or do they do this because its gen 8?
So to keep the cards with gen 8 pokemon they just called it sword and shield as well,is that why?
Also i tried the video games on switch the modern pokemon games changes to much its not for me but i do love TCG and the anime still..
    Anyways i was curious

It's because they're eighth generation sets. The TCG has followed this naming pattern ever since Gen. 4, and some of the Gen. 3 sets were also named after games (as was the first Gen. 2 set in Japan). The video games are the core of the franchise after all. Even most seasons of the anime are named after the games.

Ah sorry i just recently came back to pokemon i didnt rly like the direction of the modern games on switch but i do kove tcg and anime still,
So if i understand it right they use the same name because its the same generation and probably share the same pokemons?
Otherwise the TCG game and video games are pretty different IMO

Despite being named after the games, not every Pokémon or character that appears in the Sword & Shield sets are obtainable in or even transferable to the Sword & Shield video games. Surskit and Masquerain from Sword & Shield—Rebel Clash and Bruno from Sword & Shield—Battle Styles, for example. Most of the sets predominately feature Gen. 8 Pokémon though.

The TCG is obviously inspired by the video games, but the actual gameplay is vastly different.

It's just something they do to coincide with a new release

    In English Sets we've seen

    Ruby and Sapphire ex
    Emerald ex
Fire Red and Leaf Green ex
    Diamond and Pearl
    Platinum
    Black & White
    X&Y
    Sun & Moon
    Sword & Shield

they don't always do it for a new game, and in more recent years its always to usher in a new era of the tcg to go alongside the current gen of games (we'll be getting Scarlet & Violet in the new year for instance)
