Will Pokemon shift away from the 3DS?
With the announcement of the new Nintendo NX, do you think it's likely to replace the 3DS as Nintendo's portable console? If so, the Pokemon games will probably follow suit.
Of course at this point, it's all speculation. Just looking for opinions. I just bought an N3DS and am hoping it won't become obsolete too soon..

Don't worry the 3ds may be old, but there's still plenty of games to play. I think S/M might be the last games for the 3ds although the NX might have potential for pokemon games.

Nah, it's too much of a lucrative franchise to pull the plug at this stage. The main series games have all sold beyond 10 million units per set and Pokemon GO has become the most downloaded app in the first week rivalling apps such as Tinder, Snapchat and even Twitter which are all extremely popular. Pokemon is up there with the likes of Mario and Zelda for Nintendo's highest earners so it wouldn't really make sense to end it just yet.

At this stage, we don't know if the NX is the 3DS successor at all considering what little info we have about it. The 3DS is something I think still has life in it and even if the NX is confirmed to not be either the Wii U or 3DS's successor and just released as its own entity we could maybe still see a Pokemon game on NX.

Yeah, I doubt Pokemon will stop soon, if ever. As the title suggests, I am more concerned with it ending on the 3DS and shifting to a different console.

Nintendo have confirmed the NX is not a successor to the 3DS or the Wii U, instead it's seen as a brand new console. With that in mind I think the main series Pokemon games will stay on the 3Ds for the time being, with a few spin offs coming to the NX, although personally I would love Pokemon on the big screen :)
Apparently they said the same thing about the DS when the GBA was still around. If they openly admitted that the NX would be a successor their sales for the 3DS and Wii U would drop significantly, no?

Yeah but I'm not saying anything about the sales I was just mentioning how Nintendo said it wouldn't be a successor so I think the main series Pokemon games would remain on the 3DS :)

I meant to say that Nintendo might be lying about that in order to protect their current sales.

ScoSap's link has proven the NX will be a separate entity to the existing consoles altogether so main series Pokemon games will be staying on the 3DS. So yeah, I conclude Sun & Moon will not be the last Pokemon games.

I think the main attraction for the 3DS is Pokemon, if you look at the top selling games for the console then #1 and #3 are both Pokemon X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire respectively. I do think if they did shift over to a new console then the 3DS sales would significantly decrease, though.

It looks like the NX is a separate console and there's been no news of any sort of successor to the 3DS so right now I think they'll be sticking to that. The 3DS still has good capabilities for a handheld and I think they can manage to get another 2-3 years out of it at least. The Nintendo DS lasted for about 7 years before the 3DS was released in 2011, if the 3DS has a similar lifespan then that would mean it would be around until atleast 2018.

I feel like its pretty logical that they would reboot the franchise after S/M, but as someone else said, I don't think they would just end such a huge franchise.
