Or more specifically, whoever wrote the dialogue for sailors and swimmers.

    Here are some examples.

    Suicidal swimmer

    Before the match
"I've led a life of woe and misery...
I've been cast away, and this is where I've drifted..."

    After
    "A life adrift...
    I don't want it anymore!"

    Lonely swimmer
"In the deep blue sea, my shattered blue heart finds comfort among waves."

    Frustrated swimmer
"The sea... The sea... The sea...
The sea as far as these eyes can see!
I'm sick and tired of the sea!"

    Self pitying swimmer
"You thrashed me... I want to disappear in a wave of despair..."

    Another lonely swimmer
    Before match
"Here I am swimming by my lonesome on this wide, beautiful sea.
There's no other word for it. This is pathetic!"

    After
    "I'm feeling blue.
    Blue as the sky..."

    Poetic sailor
"Thea sea is just so vast... Could the sea have been made by the tears
    shed by POKEMON?"

Yep, ten bits of script out of hundreds is definitely meaning the writers were depressed.

Maybe, just maybe, the people are depressed instead?

I mean, I'd be depressed too if I had to sit in the ocean forever.

I think some of those translators had a bad day.

So you had a bad day. You take it all out and make some swimmers commit suicide.

Man , the guy with the "shattered heart" is like @_@ .

I always had fun with dialogues in this game ! :]

    I think you're onto something....

Although they are swimmers....trapped in the open sea forever with no hope of seeing landfall...and with weak pokemon.

Their morale is destroyed further when you blow through there with a lvl 75 whatever-mon sending their delusion of a chance at a league battle adrift...just like them....

Haha. To be honest, my favorite dialogue is the Team Rockets of Gold/Silver*. But these trainers seemed to follow a theme, so I took note the last time I played through that area. It's a pretty awesome part of the game, reading all the inane dialogue.

*Scientist: I don't even care if Pokemon are hurt in my experiments!

    ^Yup.

My sister and I discussed this the other day actually. Never getting to move except for that one time that a trainer comes along and beats you, your team is generally made up of multiple pokémon of the same type (boring much?), and you just have to stand there, day and night, forever... I'd be pretty depressed too.
