Heavy metal popular songs aren't that bad compared to mainstream pop or country. There's stuff like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Nightwish and Nirvana, whose most well-known songs are actually good. While I can say the same about Gangnam Style, The Fox or Let It Go, I can't say the same about Gentleman, Hangover, or any of JB/1D/Taylor Swift/Miley Cyrus/Nicki Minaj songs. Speaking of Nicki Minaj, I mean... even the name of the songs are just stupid. "Beez in the Trap"? "Stupid Hoe"? REALLY?!
few things I take issue with here -- namely, Nirvana isn't metal. I'd argue that most of their Nevermind material was pop filtered through multiple layers of fuzzy guitars and some mild screaming. regardless, that was one half of the pop landscape in the early '90s, but your list of metal groups is so disparate that it's hard to even make a comparison with any of the other bands you mentioned. REGARDLESS. okay, I got this far and now I'm not actually sure the argument you're making, but song titles are not, will not and Never Will Be an accurate representation of the sounds contained within; that's just one thing. also Taylor Swift has some absolutely incredible tunes.

1. ooooo fucked up

2. nah, not really. Metallica and Iron Maiden are decently similar (though Maiden today is starting to resemble classical a litlte bit - go look up Empire of the Clouds) while early Nightwish had excellent power metal songs (kinda like Maiden and Metallica which I both consider power metal) and the new one has soft metal songs that are very beautiful (Elan, Endless Forms Most Beautiful [no pun intended],...).

What I really mean is that there are good and bad songs in metal (not a big fan of Maiden's Where Eagles Dare song for some reason), just like in any other genre, like rap, country, etc. The difference is the bad songs in mainstream pop are REALLY awful... the popular Harlem Shake was just a part of the actual song, but man what do people do with it? Just moving crazily around the floor... wtf. Gentleman? It might be a parody but it's a bad one (unlike Gangnam Style) since it makes fun of women... dear PSY, you're not a South Park character. Hangover is something I don't need to explain.

Of all those mainstream pop artists I mentioned only 1D writes their own lyrics, but they're not very good at it.... "couple billion girls, find another one cause she's mine"... meh. For me the capability of writing your own song, unless it's a parody or something, matters quite a bit, though there are some songs where I'll let it slide (Khaled - C'est la vie).

Song titles aren't something to be ignored imo. "Beez in the Trap" is a ridiculous title and you know it... IT'S ABOUT BEES IN YOUR BUTTHOLE!!! If Nicki has something like that in her ass, she should see a doctor, not rap about it. Also since when do bees make their homes in your ass? Not gonna extend this further lol...

"Stupid Hoe" - ok, this is less disturbing, but it still seems really stupid to me.

And one more... "Best Song Ever" by 1D. I get it, it's about "dancing all night to the best song ever"... but the title chosen makes you think "did 1D just make a song and think it's the best song ever?" and that's how some go on and say "more like the worst song ever" lol.

not gonna break this up because this post is LOng and I Can't Be Arsed rn; Metallica was thrash metal first then kinda segued into heavy metal with the black album, and Iron Maiden was pretty much standard heavy metal but also kind of NWOBHM if you really wanna get Technical with the genre names; but that helps no-one. power metal's more like Helloween or something. much more fantastical than either of those two groups were. I'll at least concede that they're both metal, and I can see the similarities between 'em. I guess Nightwish is kind of power metal but it's very watered down. granted, I'm not a fan of (most) power metal nor Nightwish, so perhaps I'm biased, but still.

and I think you're looking at the wrong mainstream songs. 'Harlem Shake' was basically a meme even though I think it moderately bangs, and PSY is hardly indicative of today's pop landscape considering he was chiefly an internet sensation that I'm not sure anyone actually unironically enjoyed. that's a strawman, but alas.

also One Direction is a boy band and I think if you're gonna chastise them for not writing their own lyrics then you're kinda picking the wrong things to criticize about them. they never said anything to the contrary, they're not staking their claim on their originality or so-called authenticity. and Nicki Minaj's tongue is firmly in her cheek, I think, but maybe not. I don't particularly like her music but I definitely understand the appeal. additionally I haven't heard "Beez in the Trap" in awhile but I remember it being okay. ALSO, if you're gonna poke fun at her nonsensical lyrics take a look at these killer Nirvana lyrics: "a mulatto / an albino / a mosquito / my libido / yeah." poetic genius. Kurt Cobain is notorious for pretty much spitballing a lot of his lyrics when he went in to sing with no plan in mind beforehand, and it shows through songs like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' where the lyrics are kind of, well, absurd. and I'm not knocking that approach -- Nirvana has some killer lyrics, and they're dear to my heart, of course.

if you want modern pop that absolutely rips, listen to this, for example. the song slays. I'd link more but my computer will crash if I try to load more chrome tabs. LOL.
