Seeing all these threads lately about moves and Pokemon (ahem), it has made me stop and think. Were each Pokemon created with a purpose? I mean, if Arceus created all the Pokemon then do you think that it did because of something? Basically, do Pokemon have destinies?

I'm not really the fatalistic type, but I do think that each Pokemon were created for some reason. However derpy-looking that Pokemon may be, they were still created hence, they have a purpose in life. Sometimes, however, I see Electric-type Pokemon wandering around giving energy through wires for electricity. xD

I'd think if Arceus was going to create pokemon then it would be done for a purpose. Meaning that pokemon has a purpose too it. Or it's the pokemons job in life to find meaning and purpose. I think every pokemon has a purpose, it's just up too them to find that purpose.

That's asking were the starter Pokemon bound to be starter Pokemon?

I don't think so, it's just how the society created a niche for them instead. Although I believe legendary Pokemon to be an exception, for they are legendary for a reason.

Well its easier to see the purpose of legendaries, for example, the weather trio. Groudon has the power to make continents, Kyogre can make an ocean. Also Dialga manages time, while Palkia is the being of space. Mesprit, Uxie and Azelf are apparently the emotions of humans and Pokemon. That being said, I have no idea on the purpose of stunfisk! (my least favourite Pokemon)

Arceeus created Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf to teach the humans knowledge, emotion and willpower, respectively. It also created Dialga and Palkia to control time and space. (as above said).

It could be assumed that Arceus also created multiple Mew which eventually "evolved" into the 640+ Pokemon we know of now.

Well, if you put it that way, I guess that they really don't have any set destiny. When Arceus created them all, I doubt he actually had a goal in mind. I do think, however, that he had human influence in mind while he created them, seeing that Pokemon and humans are very compatible. But overall, I don't think that they had a real destiny. I think that they just found themselves, and each Pokemon can find their own destiny through their choices and interactions. This could also apply to a few legendary Pokemon, such as the Eon Twins. They really do act like normal Pokemon, just as an extreme rarity when in captivity.

I think that while arecus was creating pokemon, they where in eggs and when a cosmic exploxison happened they all seperted (like the legendary dogs) and roamed the pokeworld, each to find there own destiny...

Well, apart from the fact of the legendary Pokemon's destiny what about normal Pokemon? Do you think that they were destined for a trainer and that trainer only? And that they met for a reason? That's what I would think.

So you mean that every pokemon that trainers have are destined to met that trainer? to put it that way, that is possible. But what about the wild one? are they don't have destiny? In my thinking, of course they do. All of them have destiny, but only few have very definite destiny.

I don't believe in destiny when it comes to Pokemon, sorry. Sure, each and everyone of them has some unique trait that depicts something, but as far as their masses go, I don't think that pulling such a thing as 'destiny' is possible.

In other words, since we have gotted used to the mass type (for example, there are a lot of Caterpies out there, and they're all beings from the same gene, how different can they be from one another?), it's hard to imagine that certain pokemon carry a destiny, and if they would, they must have been restrained by rarity (or uniqueness-meaning, the legendaries).

Well, at first I was thinking that pokemon, like animals, do serve a purpose in a food chain; like Pidgeotto eating and hunting for Caterpie, Caterpie eating lettuce, etc.

I guess now looking at these responses, I suppose that since there is easily a "bond" between pokemon and human, the pokemon do have a purpose on bonding and working with humans, I suppose.

In the ecosystem, each organism has a "niche" -- its role in the environment. In that way, each plant or animal has a destiny, and it wouldn't be surprising for Pokemon to take the same route. If you take the concepts of ecological niches and extend them to roles such as Voltorb providing electricity, Slugma living on volcanoes, or Cofagrigus attacking graverobbers, then it all makes sense. But if you mean something else by "destiny", then I'm not sure what you mean, but I probably don't agree with it.
