If Black/White didn't have any new Pokemon, they would have been 4th gen. Generations specifically refer to the addition of new Pokemon. If Black/White didn't have anything new, I would have passed on them probably, because the region and story were both overall lackluster.

The only time I have done this is when I used to use Crobat in my team for 3 o 4 regions, but I have since found replacements for it and only use it in my Sinnoh team. I love to try Pokemon I've never used before when a new generation comes out; once I find 6 Pokemon per region, they are permanent.

I enjoy the surprise of finding a random shiny. I used Masuda Method one time for my shiny Azumarill, and even went through the trouble of getting good IVs, egg moves, and a preferable nature onto it. I'm happy with the results, but probably will never do that for another shiny. It kinda burnt...
