The first pokemon that I kept in my party was Scraggy, who replaced Timburr. On the subject of replacing pokemon, I actually trained like 3 guys who never made it to the end of the game. Not to mention I didn't have a full party until the 8th gym.

I picked the Plume fossil (Archen) because I needed a flying pokemon on my team before I beat the Elite 4. He actually was very useful in my playthrough, with his sky-high stats, and I didn't have too much of a problem with his ability. Although that isn't to say that I wish he had a better one.

I personally hate the thing. It changes the dynamic of competitive battles, because now there's this whole healing thing. Not to mention if you accumulate points you can get your pokemon a free belly drum - the HP loss. Whenever me and my friends play we don't allow it's use.
