you can use savestates or pick in Config<Savetype Flash 512 then save normally, but there will be some lag while saving normally using the one ingame.

My desmume does not lag, maybe only at the start and saving for Pokemon White, While Pokemon Black does not lag at all yet. Maybe you need to get another ROM?

I think Linux is the only one supported..I never saw anyone try to run Vista. And I thought replacing the HDD doesn't void the warranty... it's in the instruction manual on how to replace it.

Try running it on XP or Vista compatibility mode.
