try change the options NDS cartridge Backup Media->512k FLASH or 256k, what's not now. and be sure you have all the files needed (and the sound not disabled, at least in diamond/pearl you should)

I suppose it's because you haven't activated sounds. Go to the options and switch them on, (if i remember well) no$gba need them.

can't be a messed up rom? try some simple scripting on a clean rom. if neither that is working, try reinstalling... and go elsewhere asking for help, this is not the right section (i suppose rom hacking in general is)
