  • Chapter 1-3, Part 2: Fighting Forever!

"Two... Four... Six... Nine. This is bad."

Asher counted the approaching Doduo, and the census was not a good one. Nine against two were lousy odds, but in pragmatic combat, the enemy may not exercise chivalry and try to win through sheer number. As unfortunate as it was, there was no way to avoid the angry herd.

"They may need my guidance for this battle..."

Asher issued his first attack orders as a Trainer. "Orion, when I tell you to, use Sand Attack. Atlas, stand ready for a Tackle." Both Pokemon uttered a sharp monosyllabic response as acknowledgement.

Meanwhile, Asher was focusing all his attention on the position of the lead Doduo. Too early of an attack, and the Sand Attack would settle and be useless. Too close and they'd still get run over. He watched the Doduo in a personal slow motion that he had honed from his dodging and blocking of the Dojo's Hitmonchan's Mach Punches.

When they neared the optimal range, Asher shouted, "Orion, go!" Flapping his wings madly, Orion kicked up a sizable dust cloud that blinded the oncoming Doduo. They screeched and squawked as they tripped over themselves and one another, and by the time they reached Asher, the mob looked more like a fluffy Tangrowth than a knot of Doduo.

Asher continued the instruction: "Orion, dive and Poison Sting! Atlas, go!"

Orion quickly looped in the air and dived toward the cluster, firing poisonous needles like a mad dogfighter. Simultaneously, Atlas rammed into the knot at full force, sending the birds scattering.

Some of them had been poisoned, and got up more slowly than the angry ones, who either charged at Atlas with a Peck, or leapt up to knock Orion out of the air. Not having wings, Orion didn't expect a Doduo to attack from the air, so the Doduo that did reach him caught him off guard and easily pinned him the the ground, all the while fiercely Pecking at his head. Goliath temporarily in dispose, Orion saved himself by firing a Poison Sting right up at his assailant. The Doduo screamed and jumped off, but a replacement was not far off... Meanwhile, Goliath was holding back a charging Doduo with his horn. Four others circled around the two, occasionally reaching in to snap at him.

Seeing Atlas literally surrounded by enemies, Asher called out, "Orion! Help Atlas!" Orion flew overhead, spraying a few of the circling Doduo with more Poison Sting. They temporarily scattered, but the leader was still struggling to try and overpower Atlas. Applying the redirection of forces he learned in Aikido, Asher ordered Atlas to, "Roll back!"

Still pushing with all its force, the Doduo fell forward when Atlas stopped pushing back. By rolling backwards, Atlas effectively redirected all the Doduo's strength into a rolling throw.

Orion had already picked a poor Doduo to clamp down on, and as it ran around frantically trying to shake him off, it was rammed in the side by a brutal Horn Attack. It cried out and collapsed. Meanwhile, more of the Doduo had been poisoned by Orion's air raids, and they were losing their vigor fast.

Asher continued to lead his troops against the army. "Atlas fall back, Orion use Sand Attack!" When Atlas was safely behind him, Orion whipped up another dust devil to keep the Doduo blinded. As the sand settled, Atlas had already sent the nearest Doduo flying with a Horn Attack. Orion circled overhead, weakening the Doduo with poison before Atlas finished them off with a powerful Tackle or rib-shattering Horn Attack. The last three Doduo charged, and likewise were met with potent synchronized attacks.

As they removed the last of the Doduo, Asher noted that Orion was better suited for distraction, having not learned any moves yet that utilized those massive claws. Atlas, on the other hand, packed a punch with his Horn Attack, but couldn't deal with multiple enemies at once. In a way, the two made a perfect team.

Although Orion's Sand Attacks had been useful, the Doduos' violent thrashing meant that both he and Atlas had suffered a lot of damage. When the immediate area was safe, they both collapsed in the grass. Asher was already waiting with two Potions for them, and after the application, he took the rolled-up tarp out of his bag and spread it on the ground. He picked up the two Pokemon and placed them on the tarp so that they could rest more comfortably.

He didn't like having to wait, but the break was necessary if he was to reach the volcano.

  • Part 3
Totodile stared in awe at the PokeBall as it shook back and forth. Will the Starly be caught this time? Soon the PokeBall slowed and then stopped all together. Starly was caught. Totodile looked at the ball and then at me. "Yes, you can pick it up," I said. Totodile picked up the ball and looked at it. He began to shake it, up and down, back and forth. He then turned it to the front and stare at the button, wondering what it was for. He slowly and gently pushed down on it. The ball quickly opened and released Starly in a flash of light. Startled Totodile fell to the ground. After the light faded Starly was in full view. Seeing her Totodile jumped up quickly and threw the PokeBall at her head, scoring a direct hit. Starly was knocked off her feet and fell onto the ground from the blow. Shocked, I ran over to Starly and cradled her in my arms. "Totodile! Don't do that!"

"Totodile Dile!" He complained as he pointed towards Starly.

"I know that you just came out of a fight and all but now Starly is on our team. Try to think of her as a friend now, okay." Totodile looked at me a little puzzled, and then looked over at Starly. I wasn't sure he fully understood what I said.

"Dile," he said while nodding his head. Showing that he at least got the point. Totodile walked up towards Starly and patted her on the head, showing he was sorry. Starly turned her head and pecked at Totodile's hand, angry at what he had done.

"Star!" She yelled at Totodile and rested her head back on my chest.

"Totodile!" He said pointing at Starly.

"Well you did hit her first," I said chuckling. "Okay, lets get you all patched up Starly," turning my attention back to Starly. I reached into my bag and took out a potion. "This might sting a little, Starly," I said as I sprayed some potion on her wing. Starly winced and pulled back her wing, and examined it to see if there was any damage. When she saw none she relaxed a little, but I could tell she was a little wary. "It'll be okay," trying to reassure her. I sprayed some on her chest and cheeks and I gave her an Oran Berry to eat. As I sat there and watched her eat my stomach growled. Just then I realized that I had gone almost a whole day without food. I was starving! I took out a small can of fruit from my backpack, along with a can opener, a plastic fork, and a napkin. Before I opened up the food I looked towards Totodile, he was sitting by himself just a couple feet away. I wondered why he was over there by himself, staring into the sky. I walked over and sat next to him. "So, you hungry?" Totodile turned his attention to me at the word food. "I'm guessing that's a yes," I said smiling at him. Just then it occurred to me, I didn't have any Pokemon Food. Did pokemon eat anything other than that and berries? If they didn't I couldn't give them all of the ones we had now, I needed those in case someone got injured. What was I supposed to do! I thought quickly, trying to find the answer to my question. Starly! Since she's lived here she must know where to find food. "I think if you ask Starly she'll tell you where to find food, Totodile," his excited expression quickly vanished into disappointment; he obviously did not like the sound of that. "C'mon Totodile, is it really that bad? I'm pretty sure if you ask nicely she'll be more than happy to tell you," Totodile gave a thoughtful glance over toward Starly.

"Totodile," was the only thing he said before he got up and walked towards Starly. I couldn't hear what they said over from where I was, but I could tell they weren't getting along. Totodile looked angry, and so did Starly. Just looking at them I could tell that this teamwork thing wasn't going to work out too well, or at least for now. After several minutes of fighting, Totodile stomped off into the woods, frustraited and angry. I hope he'll be okay.

It had been hours and Totodile still hadn't come back. The sun had nearly disappeared over the horizon, it was nearly nightfall. I was worried, and still hungry. I didn't eat when Totodile left, I was taut that it was rude to eat in front of other people while they were without food. Is he okay? I knew I couldn't just sit here; I had to go find him. I got up and looked towards the woods.
"Starly," she looked up at my call, "we're going to find Totodile."

    Totodile

I sat down looking up at the stars, thinking about all that had happened today. I would say the day had gone well. Everything was perfect except the fact that that Starly was here. I hated her, she was so annoying. All she did was complain and argue. I don't know why the kid told me that I had to be her friend. We just fought a while ago and now we have to be friends? That didn't make much sense to me. The kid to me, probably wondering why I'm so far away from everyone else. He sat down next to me; I continued to look into the sky.

"So, you hungry?" He asked me. I quickly turned my head. I had been hungry since our battle. "I'm guessing that's a yes," he told me smiling. He sat there silently for a while, thinking I guessed. I felt a wave of anxiety hit me. What's the matter with him!? I didn't change my expression so he wouldn't know that I noticed. "I think if you ask Starly she'll tell you where to find food, Totodile," what little happiness I had left quickly vanished. Of all pokemon in the world why did it have to be Starly that I'd have to ask? "C'mon Totodile, is it really that bad?" Yes! "I'm pretty sure if you ask nicely she'll be more than happy to tell you," I thought about this some. It does make sense, when you ask nicely usually you'd get a nice response.

Fine, I'll do it," I got up and walked over to her. Every step even more painful than the last. When I finally got to her I let out a long sigh. She looked up and frowned angrily.

"What do you want?" She said coldly.

"I just wanted to know if you could tell me where to find good places for food so I can bring some back and we can eat."

    "No, I won't"

"Why not!" I said a little angry.

"You've got a nose! Use it!"

"How is that supposed to help!"

"Use your nose to sniff out the berries!"

"Why can't you just tell me were they are!" I was enraged now.

"Because I'm not going to tell you everything!" I was tempted to just attack her right then and there, but I couldn't, we had to be friends.

"You know what! Fine! I don't need you help!" I stomped off into the woods, frustrated at Starly. How could she act like that! One simple thing I ask and she makes like it's a big deal. That bird will drive me insane one day. As I walked into the woods I noticed how close these trees really where. I hadn't even notice till now. I looked into the bushes and trees, making sure no pokemon were there to make an attack or ambush me from behind. I listened hard, hoping I could here a nearby pokemon sneaking up on me. I walked deeper in the woods, still looking for berries. Who new that they were so scarce! I couldn't find a single one anywhere! I looked up into the sky to see how much time has passed. Not much, but it was getting dark. How could I find food, I had no idea where it was. I was starving and I couldn't find any food. I remembered what Starly had said. I had to use my nose. I new this would be hard I have never found food with my nose before, just other pokemon. I lifted up my head and sniffed the air, nothing. I put my nose to eye level and sniffed the air, still nothing. I then out my nose to the ground and inhaled as deeply as I could, I got something. I followed the scent, moving faster with every step. I was moving so fast that I was running on all fours! Are Totodile even supposed to do that? The scent finally stopped at a bush. I looked all around it; I even looked inside and found nothing. Was my nose just tricking me? Was I just so hungry that I made up a scent? I inhaled one more time, making sure I was right, I found it again! I breathed in harder, trying to figure out where it came from. Circling all around the bush, I found where the scent was strongest, right under the base of the bush. A pokemon must have buried it there to save for later. If I took this it'd be stealing, I wasn't one of those rouge pokemon that went off stealing food, but I was starving, and I needed to bring something back. What choice did I have? I dug my claws into the soil, ripping at it to get to the food. As I dug I saw the dirt uncover something, it was pink and as it moved down to the base faded into a light orange. The fruit was almost heart shaped and round. It was a Pecha Berry! I found food at last! I grabbed the Pecha Berry as fast as I could and gobbled it down. Berry after sweet berry made its way into my mouth. When I finished I had eaten six or seven berries. Not many were left, but there was still enough for a meal. I picked up the rest and carried them in my arms. This whole experience was much easier than I had thought. Guilt washed over me, but I had to do it for the kid. Suddenly I heard leaves rustle behind me, I looked back to see what it was. In the tree perched on a branch, its icy stare boring into me, stood a Sperow.

"You just made the wrong choice," the Sperow let out a long, loud, high-pitched screech that could be heard from miles away. The noise was deafening. I couldn't think strait, I had no idea what was happening anymore, and I had become confused. I looked to the side and all I saw was a wing and feeling massive amounts of pain before being knocked out.

As I regained consciousness I heard mumbling. I couldn't quite make out what they were saying but I knew they were close. I opened my eyes and looked around. I was in a daze so I couldn't figure out where I was, all I really knew is that I was laying on the ground. I turned my head to the right. I saw two Evee talking to each other at the end of the room. They seemed a little worried, but I couldn't really tell. I turned my head upwards toward the roof. There I saw a Spinerak playing with some web. It must have had a lot of time on its hands. The Spinerak stopped what it was doing and looked down at me.

"Ah, he's finally awake," the Spinerak scuttled away, taking its piece of web with it. I sat myself up against a wall and let out a grunt. The two Evee that were talking across the room stopped and looked towards me fearfully. They whispered to each other urgently, and walked over to me with caution. As they approached I could see that they were both boys, very young too. When they thought they were at a safe distance they stopped and examined me.

"S-So, wh-what are you?" The first Evee said. I was surprised that they had never seen a Totodile before. I opened my mouth to answer but the second one cut me off.

"It probably doesn't understand you," this made me somewhat angry, but he was young do I didn't hold too much against him.

"I can understand you perfectly," I said casually. The Evee stepped back, obviously afraid.

"Y-you can talk?" The first one said.

"Of course, aren't I a pokemon just like you? Why would I be so much different? Other than appearance we're exactly alike."

"No we're not," the second one responded, "We would never steal another pokemons food." The guilt came back even stronger than before. I opened my mouth but no sound came out, I couldn't speak. The first Evee looked angrily over at the second.

"Now look what you've done, Claud, you've made him sad, now say sorry."

    "But Theo!" He wined.

    "Now I said,"
"I'm sorry," he said with his head bent down, "I hope you can forgive me."

"It's alright," I said, "I'm guilty of the crime."

"I'll take that as a confession," a voice said. I looked to the left and saw a large Staraptor about six feet away. He was accompanied by a Sperow, a Pigey, and that Spinerak I saw earlier. "Hello, my named is Arcerdus; I will be one of the pokemon to set your punishment." He looked towards the two Evee, "And why are you two here. You know you aren't allowed to talk to the criminals."

    "But-" Theo began.

"But nothing! Instead of trying to come up with lies to make me believe you were talking to him for an important reason, maybe you should be setting a good example for your younger brother!" Theo, put his head down. "Riton, please make sure these two make it back to their den, and give their mother a full report about their shenanigans."

"Yes sir," The Spinerak, who was Riton, scuttled over to the Evee and led them down a corridor. Arcerdus turned his attention back to me.

"Your trial will begin now," he then turned around and went down the passage. The Pigey and Sperow ran over to escort me to a larger room. There I saw one row of pokemon on each side of the room, each with a cold stare that seemed to penetrate through my skin. Near the back, in the center of the room I saw Arcerdus, accompanied by two other pokemon, a Fearow, and a Pigeoto. Just to the side of them was a small Weedle that stared directly at me, anger in its eyes. The two guards walked me further into the center of the crowd, and proceeded to run back to guard the entrance. "We may now begin. This Totodile was accused of stealing another pokemons food. He was found guilty earlier today through confession." Soft murmurs began to build. "We have found that the food belonged to Fredge." He pointed his wing towards the Weedle. "Now Fredge, please explain to us why you stored that food." Fredge stepped forward.

"I stored them their so I could eat it later. It was my secret stash after all," he said stepping backwards. There were nods of agreement.

"Now," Arcerdus began. "Tell us young Totodile, why did you take the food. Please state your name before you answer."

"My name is Eppidus. I took the food because a friend of mind was injured and we were both starving. I was asked to collect some berries for us to eat." I looked at Arcerdus, trying to find anything from his facial expression, I found none.

"And what kind of pokemon is this friend of yours?"

"She's a Starly." There were gasps in the audience.

"Okay, you've heard what you needed to; now let us make a decision. You are all dismissed."

The guards came up and escorted me out of the room. Soon the audience came pouring out. How long will I have to wait before I get to leave? The kid must be worried about me. If only I knew how much time had passed. It was a long time before the three birds came to announce their verdict. "This was a very hard decision; there were many strong points, with and against him. In the end we couldn't make a fitting punishment, but we did think of something. Theo will have a test of strength. If he is strong enough to defeat an opponent of our choosing he'll be able to go home freely, but with one condition."

"What is it?" A little Starly asked.

"That you will find out if he succeeds, but if he doesn't, he'll have to clean up the whole forest, and never be allowed to leave."

"What!" I blurted out. I couldn't stay here! I had to get back to the kid!

"Oh but yes, young Totodile! Did you think that you'd be able to just walk away no harm done?"

"No, but I didn't think I'd have to fight for it."

"Maybe next time you'd better think about that before you go off and start stealing." I had thought about the consequences but I didn't think they would make me fight!

"Would you like to begin now?"

    "You're giving me a choice!?"

"Why of course! You'll be stuck here till you fight, so, if you decide not to fight it'd save me a lot of time."

    "Fine, I'll do it now."

"Great! Let us begin." I was led to an enormous room, it was maybe two times bigger that the last. Just like they did in the last room the two guards ran back and stood at the entrance. I stood there for a while, waiting for the opponent. I wanted to get this over quickly so I could return. Finally my opponent came. He entered through a rectangular hole high in the ceiling. He was a Yanmah. When he made it to the ground he circled around me, probably seeing if I was even going to be a challenge. When he stopped he looked towards Arcerdus.

"I'll make quick work out of this one," he said maliciously. Arcerdus walked in between us.

"When I give the signal you will start, not before, not after, do you understand?" He said looking straight at Yanmah. He must've had a record for early starts. He nodded his head. "Good," Arcerdus said pleasingly. He then flew up and perched onto a stick that was hanging out from the walls. Seconds passed, then minutes, when was he going to start? Yanmah looked pretty agitated, maybe Arcerdus was testing him. Arcerdus let out a screech signaling us to begin. The Yanmah threw its body onto me, pinning me down. It was so fast I didn't even have time to react. His mouth began to generate a purple glow; he was getting ready for a poison sting. Just before he got to use it I opened up my hands and scratched him in the face. He wasn't expecting this. When my attack struck he fell back, hitting the ground with a thump. I got up quickly and stood over him before he had time to recover and slashed at his cheeks. As I was doing this, thoughts rushed through my mind. Was this battle really going to be this easy? I expected a challenge and yet I have gotten none. But I can't think that yet I suppose, after all it just began. When my mind came back to the fight, Yanmah has charged up a Poison Sting and shot it right into my face. I felt sharp pain rush through my body, especially on my cheek. Am I poisoned? I waited a few seconds for my answer, nothing happened. I guess I hadn't, I didn't fell like I was weakening. That was a close one, I thought, I might not be so lucky next time. The Yanmah had just gotten up; I used this chance for another attack. I stared straight into his eyes, making sure they'd lock with mine. When I was sure I had him I quickly changed my expression to an evil and sinister look. He stepped back and just when he did I charged towards him and threw out my claws scratching him again. This time he stood his ground and rammed his body full force into my stomach, knocking my backwards four feet away. I looked up from the ground and saw Yanmah wince in pain. I stood up and charged toward Yanmah, taking out my claws to ready myself. Just as I reached him Yanmah flew into the air, moving back and forth with great speed. I skidded to a halt and looked up at him, how was I ever supposed to reach him? He could easily dodge my attacks with that speed. Yanmah began to glow a light gold, and I felt the Earth shake. What is happening! Chunks of rock and dirt began to levitate in the air hovering around me. Suddenly all of the rocks hurtled towards me at high speeds. One hit me in the back, and then one from the side, soon all of the rocks made a tight circle around me and all at once, hit me dead on. I felt massive amounts of pain shoot through every inch of my body. After all of the rocks fell to the ground so did I. Weakly I looked up towards Yanmah and saw his glow fade. How did I survive that? It didn't matter now, I had to win. I slowly got up, trying to ignore the pain I felt. Maybe if I use Leer enough I can weaken him, giving me and easier defeat. I stared into his eyes once again, changing my expression when the time was right. He faltered some, but quickly flew back into place. This has the same effect as it had on Starly! This would be good for me. I used Leer again, and again. On the last one he fell head first into the ground causing large puffs of dust to rise. I was still in too much pain and could barely move. The Yanmah flew back up in the air, anger in its eyes. It launched itself at me at an incredible speed. I could barely even see it. He made contact with my body, making me stumble to the side. It banked sharply and came back around hitting me again. It did this several more times before it briefly stopped. I was so weak that I couldn't stand. One more of those and I'd be finished, I had to think of a plan. I thought through everything I knew, everything I had been taught. I noticed that the Yanmah was getting weaker with every blow, this would help me. I made a plan. The Yanmah flew towards me with the same speed it had used before. Seconds before it hit I threw myself down on my back, just after I hit the ground the Yanmah flew over me. Just at that moment I raked my claws down its stomach, causing it to land with a crash. I rolled myself over to see if the Yanmah still had some fight left. It just laid there on the ground unmoving. Without any warning Arcerdus landed just behind Yanmah and examined him. After he was done he looked towards me.

"It seems as if the lad has fainted." Happiness washed over me when he said those words, I was finally done. "You may go now, unless you want to stay here to rest."

"No," I whispered weakly, "I can make it home."

"I doubt that," he said looking at me seriously, "I'll have two of our guards to bring you back to the spot you were first seen. There you can find your way home." Just as he said that, almost as if it had been rehearsed the two guards took me away. It turns out that I was underground the whole time, and I had been under there for hours, the sun had completely gone down when we emerged. It took us a while, but I was safely put back at the base of the bush were I found those berries. The two guards nodded to me before running off back into the woods. I was still weak, but I had regained some strength when the guards took me back. Sniffing the air, I found the scent of the kid and followed it all the way back. When I passed the bushes that lead to the clearing I felt happier than I ever had before. I was out of the woods and I felt safe. I walked to the area we rested in, there I saw a triangular shape sticking up from the ground, and perched on the very tip was Starly. She must have heard me approach because one of her eyes shot open.

"Welcome back," she said quietly and closed her eye once again. I walked into the triangle, I saw the kid laying down inside his hat placed into a corner. I was so happy to see him again. I quietly walked in and lay down next to him. Just then I remembered Arcerdus said something about a condition if I won. I wonder what it was. That was my last thought before I closed my eyes and drifted off into sweet sleep.
    Forest
I woke up with sleep still in my eyes. I had been up nearly the whole night the previous day searching for my Totodile. I looked to the side of me and saw him sleeping soundly next to me. I became surprised, excited, and happy at the same time.

"Totodile!" I yelled as I swiftly picked him up and held him in my arms. He was startled awake of course, but calmed down when he realized it was me. Now with my new companion returned to me, I was even more motivated to continue our journey. I stepped out of my tent ready to leave. I quickly took it down and put it in my backpack, and then we were off. Totodile walked beside me while Starly perched on my head. She wasn't heavy so I didn't mind. We walked maybe twenty minutes before I saw a break in the trees. I started to run, throwing Starly off my head, forcing her to fly after me. I stopped when we reached the end, giving Starly a chance to get back on my head. As I looked out I saw a plain that seemed to stretch on for miles "Wow," I said in awe, "I wonder what kind of pokemon live out here." I took out my map to see if there was a name for this place. There was, it was called Long Valley. I put my map back into my pocket, and we set out into the plain.

    Part 3: Continued
As we walked I noticed that the grass seemed to get taller and thicker, right until it reached my knees. I looked towards the mountains. They were a great distance away, but luckily for me they were closer that I had thought. There weren't many trees here; in fact I only saw one. We walked for about three hours before we heard a rustling in the grass. We all got ready for whatever there was to come. The noise got closer, soon I saw the grass blades move. Suddenly a Vulpix jumps out of the bushes and runs behind my leg, scared of something. Starly jumped off my head to comfort the Vulpix.

"Totodile?" He said looking at the Vulpix.

"Vulpix Vul!" It replied. Totodile looked towards the grass and growled, tensing himself. Soon a Poochyena jumped from the grass. This one looked like any regular Poochyenas I've seen; only this one had a scar on its nose. The Poochyena growled at us when it came. Perhaps this Poochyena was what the Vulpix was running from.

    "Poochy!" It yelled at Totodile.

"Totodile!" He yelled back. The Poochyena became angry; he must have said something to anger it. They began to yell at each other. And by the sounds of all of it, nothing was nice. Then, without any warning the Poochyena bit Totodile in the leg. Totodile cried in pain. He then took his claws and scrapped then across the Poochyenas back, causing it to cry out too. The Poochyena let go of Totodiles leg and jumped back. The Poochyena ran towards Totodile and tried to tackle him, but Totodile dodged out of the way and scratched it in the back again. At this point I didn't think I needed to say a thing, Totodile seemed to have it under control. The Poochyena quickly turned around and tried to bit Totodile again, but was only scratched in the face. Totodile scratched the Poochyena on its side, causing it to fall onto the ground. Totodile pinned it down and used Leer. After a few moments Totodile released Poochyena. I expected it to run or try to make another attack but it didn't dare move. Totodile looked towards me. "Dile Totodile!" He said to me. I didn't get what he was trying to say until he pointed towards Poochyena, he wanted me to try and catch it. I took out my PokeBall and threw it at the Poochyena. It was sucked in by a flash of red light. The ball sat on the ground gently moving back and forth…

(OOC: I hope the Totodile part was okay.)

  • Scarecrow1113:

The forest began to thin out as they reached the exit, Shelby could tell. Though she wanted to exit the forest as soon as possible, she also wanted to make sure Pidgey evolved and Charmeleon stayed in good shape. She did some calculating and figured that Spinarak was probably the weakest on the team. So I'll find a double battle for Pidgey and Charmeleon, Shelby mused while they walked, and I'll find another Pokémon that Spinarak can take on…maybe with some help. When Shelby broke out of her musing, she looked down and noticed that Charmeleon was looking at her curiously. She grinned and rubbed the back of her head, telling the Pokémon not to worry about anything. Charmeleon gave a small shrug and they continued on.

My feet hurt again, Shelby thought as they hopped over a small stream. Shelby told Charmeleon to stop there. Charmeleon sat down on a rock, watching Shelby and observing his surroundings. Shelby grinned at the Pokémon. I'm really glad I chose this guy, she thought. She leaned against the rock Charmeleon was sitting on, simply basking in the small sunlight that shone through the dense leaves of the trees. Shelby thought of something, and then let all of her Pokémon out of their pokeballs. Pidgey flew up to a tree, Charmeleon stayed on its rock, Spinarak set itself on Shelby's shoulder, Yanmega flew up to a separate tree, Vulpix curled up near the stream (half glaring at Spinarak), and Abra sat near Shelby. Abra was asleep, but it didn't seem to mind too much.

    "Sccccyyy."

The single sound alone made Shelby's eyes snap open. Charmeleon was on instant alert, as well as Yanmega and Vulpix. Spinarak looked half scared. Pidgey looked rather disinterested. Abra was still sleeping comfortably against Shelby's shoulder. When Shelby looked back from the direction that they had came from, she saw the very same Scyther…along with another. Oh no, Shelby thought. She looked at Pidgey, who now seemed more interested. Spinarak looked frightened, but Shelby knew that if she told it to he would battle. Shelby stood up abruptly, causing Abra to snap its eyes—well, no one could really tell though—open and wake up.

"Spinarak use string shot to bind those Scyther up! Then Pidgey you use gust attack on them!" Shelby called, pointing towards the Scyther. Several strands of string shot out of Spinarak's mouth and wrapped around the Scyther, pinning them together so their blades couldn't cut the string. Pidgey swooped down towards the Scyther and created a gust of wind, sending it slamming into the bound Pokémon. They got slammed into a tree, but the momentum of the attack wasn't as bad as it could have been if there was just one Scyther. They struggled to break free. "Spinarak use poison sting on them!" Shelby called. Little white needles flew out of Spinarak's mouth and slammed into the Scyther, creating bruises and small marks.

"Scy!" one of the Scyther said angrily. They both began to thrash about, eventually snapping part of the string before finally slicing it in bits. The Scyther leapt away from the poison sting attack, and went to each of Shelby's Pokémon. She quickly told Pidgey to fly up in the air to dodge, and told Spinarak to keep the poison sting attack going. As the Scyther thudded into Spinarak, Spinarak got tossed back. Pidgey dived in and slammed its beak into the Scyther in a quick attack.

"Spinarak use poison sting!" Shelby called. Spinarak sprang back and shot needles at one of the Scyther yet again. They carefully dodged the attacks. One was battling Pidgey specifically, until it used a false swipe and sent Pidgey slamming into the ground. Pidgey fought to get back up. Shelby told Charmeleon to grab hold of Pidgey and make it stay. Pidgey struggled, but eventually cooled off. Shelby turned to Spinarak and saw that both of the Scyther was slowly advancing towards it. She turned to Vulpix. "Ember!" she called, pointing to one of the Scyther. Bright flames burst out of Vulpix's mouth, forming a double attack on them. They eventually drove both of the Scyther off, making them run back into the forest.

"Good job!" Shelby said. She grinned at her Pokémon and recalled both Spinarak and Vulpix. Abra was asleep again, so she recalled him as well. Yanmega flew down from the tree so Shelby could let it rest. She returned all but Charmeleon and Pidgey, and when she looked at them she noticed that Pidgey seemed to be sulking. She bent down so she was eyelevel with the little bird. It looked sad as well. She patted Pidgey on her small head, "You can't win them all. You did great Pidgey, I promise." Pidgey looked up and cooed. Shelby set Pidgey on her shoulder and then looked down at Charmeleon. "Ready to go?" she asked him. Charmeleon nodded, and they set off again.

  • Part 3: Continued: Continued

Back and forth it went, never seeming to end. The ball calmed. I caught it!?! No, the ball suddenly popped open releasing the Poochyena. Totodile jumped back to create distance between him and the Poochyena.

"Totodile," he looked towards me, "could you switch out with Starly? I want to see what she can do," He nodded and ran back to my side. "You ready Starly?"

"Starly!" she said with slight uncertainty. She hopped off my head and onto the field, ready for any attack. I think I'll let her do this on her own. I want to see how she does with a different pokemon. The Poochyena ran towards Starly. Just before it hit Starly moved out of the way. He tried again, but Starly did the same thing. Again and again the Poochyena would try to attack and Starly would simply move out of the way. It was like she was taunting it with her speed. One last time the Poochyena tried to land a hit, but again Starly moved out the way. Once clear of its path Starly tackled the Poochyena to the ground.

Quickly the Poochyena lifted its head and bite Starly right on the leg. Surprised by this action starly flew into the air, forcing the Poochyena to let go and drop to the ground. Starly went into a nose dive straight to the ground and pulled up at the last second, then without warning, stopped abruptly and began pumping its wings, sending dust into the Poochyena eyes, blinding it. While the puff of smoke was still in the air Starly flew into it and tackled Poochyena while it was immobile. Now on the other side, Starly pumped its wings once more and created another puff of dust, completely surrounding the Poochyena. Starly went back through the dust clouds and tackled the Poochyena again, and again. Turning around once more Starly came in for a tackle, but the Poochyena was more alert. The Poochyena jumped out of the dust cloud. Startled, Starly veered off to the right and crashed to the ground. The Poochyena charged towards Starly and bite down hard on her shoulder. Starly let out a screech of pain.

Just then Starly pushed back, knocking the Poochyena over. As the Poochyena rose up, Starly pumped her wings and let out a strong gust that pushed back the Poochyena. While it tried to stand up to the strong winds, Starly rushed in for a tackle, catching the Poochyena completely off guard. Starly rushed and landed one last tackle before the Poochyena lay on the ground fainted.

I threw my PokeBall at the Poochyena and watched it move back and forth…

(OOC: Sorry it's so short. I just wanted to get finished quickly so I could catch up with the rest of you all.)

  • Pidgey settled itself on Shelby's shoulder as they walked. Charmeleon lit the way through the dense forest, though Shelby knew there really wasn't any need for it because the forest was beginning to grow lighter and lighter with each step they took. Shelby said they could take a break after another bit of walking, so they sat down near another stream and drank water and relaxed some more. Charmeleon seemed to be training itself, using a metal claw attack to slam its claws into a big boulder. Shelby and Pidgey looked on as Charmeleon's sharp claws made slashes in the rock.

"Charmeleon, you can take a break buddy," Shelby said to her Pokémon. Charmeleon looked at her and nodded, but thrust his claws into the boulder once more, sending it shattering to bits. Shelby blinked rapidly, but didn't comment on this large amount of strength that Charmeleon just exerted to the boulder. Pidgey cooed sadly, her head lowered once more. "Aw, Pidgey," Shelby began, "you're just as strong as Charmeleon! Just because you lost one time doesn't mean you're weak." Pidgey looked at her and then flew off of her shoulder, landing on a branch and settling down once more.

Shelby grabbed Pidgey's pokeball and returned the Pokémon, grabbing Abra's pokeball this time. Abra came out in a flash of light, and instead of looking sleepy it actually looked more awake. Shelby looked around, and then looked back at Abra. She was about to say something, but then an Exeggcute plopped down from some tree branches and appeared directly in front of them. Shelby scrambled to her feet, and Abra looked as calm as ever. It almost looked playful, so Shelby thought she'd try out battling with her newly caught Pokémon.

"Alright Abra, use focus punch!" Shelby called. Abra stayed absolutely still for a few moments, storing energy. Exeggcute looked at Abra in slight confusion…that is until Abra teleported in front of the Exeggcute and punched it right in one of its faces. This caused the little eggs to begin to scramble around; causing what appeared to Shelby as an uproar attack. "Abra focus punch again!" Shelby said. This time the Exeggcute weren't going to let that happen. They used a barrage attack on Abra, so it was frozen instead of getting pumped. The attack continued, until Abra finally snapped out of it and teleported away from the attacks.

"Exeggcute!" the Exeggcute called. They began to bounce around again, looking for Abra to appear. Suddenly it appeared in a tree, storing energy for an attack once more.

"Now use that energy to attack, Abra!" Shelby called from the ground. Abra teleported behind the Exeggcute this time, punching another one of its little egg-like heads. Exeggcute slammed into the ground face first. Each of the heads cried out in pain and then angrily turned to Abra. Abra teleported away, just behind them. Every time Exeggcute would turn around, Abra would pop to a different place. Shelby blinked as she watched. Exeggcute began to finally get dizzy from all the moving around and trying to find Abra.

"Exeggcute!" the Exeggcute cried out angrily.

"Abra, that's good!" Shelby said to Abra. Abra merely looked at her, and then teleported over to where she was. The wild Exeggcute began to move off into the forest, looking rather sick and dizzy. Shelby snickered and recalled Abra, a big smile on her face. Charmeleon looked pretty amused himself. "Ready to go, buddy?" Shelby asked, looking at Charmeleon who nodded.

They walked until they were a little ways away from the mountain. Shelby looked for two wild Pokémon. All she wanted was just one more battle here, and then they could move on and camp out. Then we start up the mountain tomorrow, Shelby thought, looking at it. As she was so close, she saw that the mountain looked much bigger now than it had when they had been so far away. A pair of Venonat popped through the bushes, perfect for the final battle. Shelby grabbed Pidgey's pokeball and then told Charmeleon to get ready.

"Char!" Charmeleon said, getting into a bit of a stance. Shelby threw Pidgey's pokeball, watching as the small bird Pokémon appeared in a flash of light. The Venonat watched, but other than that didn't move or do much of anything else. Pidgey was flapping its wings, ready to battle the Venonat.

"Charmeleon kick things off with ember!" Shelby said, pointing to one of the Venonat. "Pidgey you help by using a gust attack!" Flames spurted out of Charmeleon's mouth, slamming into the wild Venonat. A small tornado came at the beating of Pidgey's wings, and Pidgey sent it careening towards Venonat. The Venonat got sent flying, while the other one got a small burn mark on it. "All right! Good job guys, just keep at it!" Shelby said.

"Geo!" Pidgey said, flapping her small wings harder. Another gust was kicked up, although this one was considerably larger than the first. It slammed into both Venonat, knocking them back. Charmeleon rushed in with a quick metal claw attack from Shelby's command.

"Char!" Charmeleon said, slashing one of the Venonat with his claws. The Venonat ran away from Pidgey and Charmeleon, hiding in the dense brush of the forest. Shelby glanced at Pidgey and then almost recalled it. Before she did though, Pidgey began to glow. Pidgey grew larger and larger, forming into a shape Shelby recognized as Pidgeotto. Shelby instantly thought of the time she saw her brother's Pidgeotto evolve into Pidgeot, but dismissed that thought from her head. Then she smiled and told Pidgeotto that it did a great job before recalling it. She and Charmeleon walked a little ways more, until they were at the base of the mountain. Shelby set up camp and then curled up on her sleeping bag with Charmeleon at her side. They fell asleep, tired after another day's hard work.

  • Kyo and turtwig watched the shaking pokeball nervously as it continued to rock back and forth, when it looked as if the wild Yanma was about to break free of the pokeball, it stopped shaking, and all went silent, as turtwig and Kyo let out a sigh of relief, and headed towards the pokeball that now lay on the ground, where the large ferocious bug pokémon once was. Kyo stood by turtwig, and picked up the pokeball, and dusted it off. "Well turtwig, I don't know what were going to do with this one. I think it would be a good addition to our team, especially if it evolves. But I really fear for your and the rest of the parties safety. What do you think turtwig, should I keep it?" Turtwig shrugged, not knowing the answer to the difficult question. "I think I'll keep it, it shouldn't be too hard to make it friendly. But I'll try and make sure of that before we meet up with the rest of team Volcanous, I want them to see that I am well fit, to take care of my own pokémon, I don't want them babying me." said Kyo as he kneeled down to turtwig's height. "I guess I'll send Yanma out last, I need to make sure that vulpix, and pidgey are up to full health, they really took a beating in their fights with Yanma." Said Kyo as he released the two hurt pokémon from there pokeballs. They both came out of their pokeballs dazed, tired, and still nearly fainted from their last battle. Kyo pulled out some of the potions he had from his bag, and healed both of his pokémon back to full health. After Kyo was finished however, they both looked confused, because they wanted to know how the battle ended. "Alright, I'm probably going to regret this, but come out here Yanma, I want you to meet everyone." said Kyo as he released the large bug pokémon from its pokeball.

Yanma came out of the pokeball with a burst of undying rage, and ferociously flied up into the air above him to observe its surroundings, and to find out what had happened. Pidgey and vulpix both had surprised and scared looks on their faces, when they saw the once wild Yanma that was released from Kyo's pokeball. Turtwig sighed, when Yanma took its battle stance to fight with the other members of its team, pidgey and vulpix, who also took their battle stances to do the same. Turtwig tried to reassure his friends that Kyo had everything under control. But their faith in turtwig and Kyo trying to resolve the matter was over when Yanma let out a large screech like sound that hurt everyone's ears, and then charged at vulpix and pidgey who were now ready to take this pokémon down, together. "Alright Yanma, return." said Kyo as he took out the pokeball and aimed it at Yanma. A beam of red light launched at Yanma, but wasn't quick enough as Yanma easily avoided the beam, while keeping at its same pace, and heading towards the same target. Right before pidgey and vulpix could launch their own tackle attacks, and before Yanma could hit them both, turtwig stepped in trying to stop the attacks. It didn't work however, and turtwig ended up getting hit with three tackle attacks all coming from members of its own team. Kyo ran over to where turtwig had gotten hurt, and knelt down beside it and used one of the leftover potions he had in his bag, to help turtwig regain some health. "Can't you guys just get along, if this fighting keeps up our entire team will be split up. And I don't want that to happen." Pidgey and vulpix came to their senses and looked up at their trainer, signaling that they understood. However Yanma only turned away from them all, being as stubborn as it is. "Come on Yanma, you're a member of this team, and you have to contribute and work well with everyone. Please it's not that hard." Yanma only continued to ignore Kyo and it flied down near a soft patch of grass and started loafing around, about ready to fall asleep. "Fine be that way, return Yanma." said Kyo as he returned the bug pokémon back to its pokeball.

"Man, what am I going to do with this one?" Thought Kyo as he took the pokeball, and securely attached it to his belt. "Alright guys, we've got about a day ahead of us to get out of this grassland, if we can move fast. I guess if we work hard enough we can reach the end by nightfall. So are you guys in?" said Kyo as he looked down to his three pokémon. All three of them nodded their heads in agreement, to their master's words. Kyo and his pokémon took off at a slow walk, and continued to enjoy every minute of the time that they had in the beautiful grassland. Every minute they got closer to the end, the land became more leveled, getting flatter and flatter every time, it almost felt as if they were on a plateau, the picked up speed as they continued down the grassy fields ahead of them. After about a half an hour, a small grouping of pokémon was visible out in the far north of the fields. There was a large grouping off Doduo, that crowed around a small area, while Kyo and his pokémon watched them carefully, the Doduo completely ignored them, being to preoccupied with what they were doing. "Come on guys; let's go see what's going on over there." Kyo's pokémon nodded their heads in agreement, as they headed north towards the large grouping of pokémon. It was hard too see, but as they made their way closer to the group of Doduo, they saw A small Mareep crouched down in the middle being pecked at a bunch of the Doduo. "I don't understand, why doesn't it just use its thunder shock attack to scare them away, it would be very effective. Oh man the poor thing looks hurt, and it looks too scared to try and stop them. Alright Vulpix lets help that little Mareep, use ember on those Doduo." said Kyo as vulpix jumped into a battle position and used its ember attack. The ember flew across the empty field and hit a bunch of the Doduo on the south side, severely damaging them. This time the Doduo didn't ignore them, after being attacked by Vulpix, about five of the Doduo came running down the field, in a fit of rage.

"Alright, all of you get out there and face those Doduo, vulpix is going to need all the help it can get if we are going to win this battle." said Kyo as he pointed a finger towards the opposing pokémon. All of his pokémon took off in front of him and took their battle stances, just as the group of wild Doduo was closing in. Kyo hesitated as he put a hand on Yanma's pokeball, He though about the outcome, and decided not to put him in this time, and wait till later. As the Doduo got closer, they used their quick attack to cross the field faster. Once they were done, they were only a few yards away from Kyo's pokemon. "Alright, Turtwig use absorb on the two on the right. Vulpix use ember on the two coming down the left side. And Pidgey, use your tackle attack on the one coming down the middle. The pokemon did as they were told, and launched their attacks upon the wild Doduo. Turtwig's absorb nearly hit the wild Doduo as they tried to dodge the oncoming attack, and took some of their health. It was able to stop the two from charging, but it didn't finish them off. Vulpix's ember hit home, and brought the two Doduo down to their knees. As they tried to run around Vulpix and attack from another side, Vulpix launched another ember, which hit and fainted one of the Doduo as it was going back around. Pidgey was able to get a hit on the other Doduo as it used tackle, but it was hurt as it got hit by a peck mid flight. The two Doduo near Turtwig used quick attack trying to hit him from the left. Turtwig stood his ground, and was able to knock one of the Doduo off its balance and faint it. But he was hit by the other quick attack, and it sent him flying back about two or three feet. The Doduo near Vulpix was able to get behind it, and attacked using peck. It was able to do this until Vulpix was able to break away, then it attacked with ember fainting the wild Doduo, but taking quite a bit damage from the rapid pecking. Pidgey came back around after its semi successful tackle attack, and attacked with sand attack. It nearly blinded the wild Doduo, which gave Pidgey an opportunity for an attack. Pidgey hit home with its tackle attack, sending the still nearly blinded Doduo to the ground. In a fit of rage it trashed around on the ground trying to Pidgey with an attack, which was still in the air watching. Pidgey slammed into the wild Doduo with another tackle attack, making it faint it on the spot. Turtwig got up before the wild Doduo could attack it, while the wild Doduo was focused on Turtwig, pidgey swooped down and finished it off with a tackle. After all the battles were done the three pokemon regrouped back near Kyo. "Good job you guys, now Vulpix send the rest of those Doduo away using your Roar attack." Vulpix did as commanded and let out a huge roar, it was so devastating that not only did it send the rest of the Doduo running away, but Kyo's pokemon were almost returned to their pokeballs. After that, all that remained in the field ahead of them was the small Mareep, which was cowering in the field with its head down, still frightened by Vulpix's roar attack.

Kyo and his pokémon carefully walked over to the small electric pokémon, waiting for it to get up. After what seemed like several minutes, the little Mareep calmly got off the ground and turned its head towards Kyo. It receded back, frightened of Kyo and his pokémon. "Don't worry were here to help. Vulpix only did that to scare away the Doduo." said Kyo trying to reassure the pokémon. The Mareep let out a smile, and jumped towards Kyo with new hope and enthusiasm. Kyo's pokémon were happy as well, and crowed around Kyo. "Say Mareep, we could really use a good electric type on the team. How would you like to join me and the rest of my pokémon?" Mareep signaled its agreement with a nod, and then leaped backwards about two feet, getting in a battle ready position. "Ah, so it seems you want to battle. Well then let's do it, go turtwig." Turtwig ran up in front of Kyo to face its next opponent on the field of battle. Mareep stood up on its hind legs and launched a thunder shock. Turtwig braced itself and took the attack head on, and received almost no damage at all. Turtwig used its time after to run around and hit the wild Mareep with a tackle from the other side. It hit on target, dealing the Mareep a good amount of damage. Taking an opportunity for an attack, Turtwig ran up and slammed into Mareep again, dealing it more damage and nearly fainting the small pokémon. Turtwig backed off as Kyo through his pokeball from a distance, and it landed on Mareep. Mareep was let in after a burst of white light, and the pokeball shut. Kyo wondered to himself, if the Mareep still had some fight in it. It probably would since in looked as if it were only a baby.

  • Chapter 1-4, Part 1: Strike of the Ninja!

Asher awoke with the sun and began his daily stretches. He knew that he wasn't as flexible as he could have been, and had decided to replace his tree-punching exercises with extra stretching. His fists were calloused enough as they were. He turned to look down a the tarp, where Orion and Atlas were still curled up sleeping. Torn between impatience and empathy, Asher graciously decided to let them rest a bit longer. Besides, they hadn't reached the point in their training where they were capable of committing to such vigorous and regular exercises. He continued his handstands and forms until the sun had reached its peak brightness before calling out to his Pokemon. The two responded without hesitation and were immediately by his side. Asher rolled up the tarp and put it back in the bag before continuing through the plain.

Much to Asher's surprise, instead of leading straight up to the volcano, the plains suddenly sloped downward terminating in a wall of trees: there was another forest between him and the volcano, and the uneven terrain hid the woods quite well from a faraway observer.

As the three travelers approached, Orion was the first to notice that there was a giant Gligar sitting on one of the foremost branches. He soared off to greet it, excited from not having seen another of his kind in a long time. The "giant Gligar" raised its pincers and hissed defensively, but Orion's happy chittering told it that he meant no harm. Orion landed on an adjacent branch and began talking to his new friend. The Pokemon, now identified as a Gliscor, didn't seem very eager to answer Orion's rapid-fire questions, but responded occasionally with clicks and monosyllabic truncations of its name.

Asher and Atlas watched the two converse, ready to respond if the Gliscor decided to attack- with its oversized fangs and snake eyes, Gliscor can understandably look quite threatening. It didn't attack, however, and after satisfying its interviewer, flapped off to continue its surveillance. Based on its behavior, Asher concluded that it was a scout for Team Volcanis. Selena did mention that she would be watching them...

The trees were not as dense as the first forest, meaning that Asher and Atlas wouldn't have to knock any trees over to progress. As they advanced, they passed the typical forest-Pokemon fare: a few docile Venonat, some Exeggcute, and a pair of Pinsir latched onto a tree. Although the Pinsir looked strong, they were minding their own business and Asher passed them by. His priority was to reach the volcano, not fight every Pokemon that came his way. Orion didn't have to give any overhead guidance, as the peak of the volcano was beginning to peek over the tops of the trees. Although it may have just been a distortion due to the sloping of the land, Asher felt that he must be getting close.

Trained to always be aware of his surroundings, Asher suddenly felt uneasy and ordered Atlas and Orion to stop. He looked around cautiously, trying to figure out what was wrong. He didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and he didn't hear anything either...

After some processing, he finally noticed the cause of his subconsious alarm:

"There are no wild Pokemon in this area.

    Why?

    Fear?

There's something in this area that the Pokemon are scared of?"

He closed his eyes and assumed a defensive stance, and following his example, his Pokemon readied themselves. They found it strange that a human was so adept at noticing things that their animal senses hadn't picked up. Behind his back, of course, the two had a recurring joke in which they imagined that Asher may very well have been a Pokemon, probably a Machoke in disguise. Either way, they trusted his instincts... and once again, they served him well.

Asher had picked up movement nearby. Something was circling around them, watching, judging. The threat was remarkably quiet, extremely intelligent for a Pokemon, but the lack of background noise amplified the sound of its footsteps in the grass. By monitoring the rhythm of its steps for any sudden changes, it is actually quite easy to predict an incoming attack.

The enemy continued circling, watching Asher and the Pokemon. Keeping the pulse in mind, Asher slowly resumed walking. He had barely taken two steps before he heard the pulse jump: his still-unseen enemy had turned and taken a quick step in a different direction. Asher reflexively raised his forearms to block the... blade? With the sharp "ching!" of metal striking metal, something glanced off of his kote and flew past before it could be clearly seen. Asher immediately remembered his dojo's rivalry with Koga's ninja academy in Fuchsia City, and for a moment he thought that he had been followed by a Fuchsia ninja. He turned in the direction that the assailant disappeared, and shouted, "Come out here, you coward!"

The response was a scream of "SCYYYYYYYTHER!"

  • The next day Shelby woke up with a small yawn. Charmeleon soon woke up after, and they (once again) began to pack up together. Shelby grinned and playfully chucked a rock at Charmeleon. It cried out and then tackled her to the ground. They laughed for a little while, and then stood up and looked at the cave opening. Charmeleon looked up and then hopped on in the cave. Shelby shouted out and scrambled after her Charmeleon, poking him when she caught up.

She noticed that there seemed to be many stairs. As they walked, she saw ledges and different things where an occasional Pokémon would be lying or sleeping. While they ascended the steps, Shelby looked down and saw that they were made of small bits of rock and limestone. She found it interesting to count them, that is until Charmeleon stopped dead in front of her, almost making her fall backwards and back down the large cliff. Shelby peered over the top of her Pokémon's head and saw a Geodude standing in their way. Shelby told Charmeleon to be on his guard and be ready to fight.

    "Geodude!" the wild Geodude said.

"Charmeleon use metal claw!" Shelby said. Charmeleon dashed in, claws sharp and shiny. They slashed across the Geodude, hurting it pretty bad. Geodude popped back though, sending rocks towards Charmeleon in a rock throw attack. Shelby told Charmeleon to dodge as many attacks as it could, which Charmeleon managed to do. "Now try to finish it off with dragon rage!" Shelby called, wanting to see his new move yet again.

A strong attack burst from Charmeleon, hitting Geodude straight away. The wild Geodude then gave out a cry and hit the rocks. Shelby grinned a bit as the wild Pokémon slumped slightly. She and Charmeleon watched as Geodude bounced away, almost creating small earthquakes as it did. Shelby then turned to Charmeleon and gave him a high five. Charmeleon gave her a happy look. Then they both looked back towards the long road ahead of them. I wonder how much longer it'll be before we even actually get there, Shelby thought. With that thought in mind, they continued walking.

A short while later they came upon a small group of Machop. There were about four or more there in total. Shelby looked to Charmeleon and nodded. Charmeleon got ready for battle. Shelby ordered a quick ember attack on one of them, just to get their attention. The flames licked one on the shoulder, causing it to get burned slightly. The Machop that had gotten hit turned around. It looked to be very annoyed and mad that it had just gotten attacked and burned. Charmeleon motioned with his claws, almost saying 'Bring it on!' Shelby blinked a few times. Oh boy, she thought.

"Chop!" Machop called, running towards Charmeleon. The wild Machop formed its hand into something that was almost a straight line, perfect for a karate chop. It slammed its hand down on Charmeleon's head, looking rather painful. Shelby's eyes widened slightly as Charmeleon staggered back, rubbing the spot on his head.

"Charmeleon use ember again," Shelby said.

"Char!" Charmeleon said, the fire on its tail burning rather brightly. Flames then spouted from Charmeleon's mouth, slamming into the single Machop. The other Machop were watching intently, almost seeming to want to fight Charmeleon themselves once this was over. Shelby ordered a metal claw attack. She watched as Charmeleon's claws became deadly, sharpened points. Then Charmeleon charged at the wild Machop and slashed it along its side. The Machop cried out and fell to one knee. "Char! Charmeleon char!" Charmeleon called.

"Now finish it up with a simple scratch attack," Shelby called. Charmeleon once again charged at the wild Machop. Though Shelby ordered a scratch, it almost looked stronger. She thought this was probably because Charmeleon had grown so much. The attack slashed across the front of Machop, knocking it to the ground. It was clear that Charmeleon had won the fight. The other Machop stirred as another one stepped up for a battle. "Come back, Charmeleon," Shelby said automatically. She didn't want Charmeleon to get too worn down—she was almost out of the good food kind of berries. Charmeleon trotted back over to her and stood at her side as she grabbed Spinarak's pokeball. I hope this is a good idea, she thought.

"Spinarak!" the little Pokémon called as it appeared out of its ball. It seemed very small compared to the Machop it was going to battle, so Shelby figured that it would be a good idea to fight from a distance.

"Spinarak use string shot!" Shelby called. Sticky string shot out of Spinarak's mouth and wound around the next Machop. Spinarak was able to drag Machop to the ground. "Next use poison sting," Shelby said. Sharp white needles shot out of Spinarak's mouth and slammed into Machop. Machop was able to take the attack, although it looked a little bit more tired than it had earlier.

"Choooop!" the Machop called. Shelby began to notice that it was storing its energy to focus. Suddenly the Machop broke the string and charged at Spinarak. Shelby quickly told Spinarak to dodge, but before it could the Machop and aimed a karate chop attack directly on Spinarak's back. Spinarak cried out, and Shelby gasped. Spinarak looked very tired just from that single attack.

"Spinarak let's try to finish this with a quick poison sting!" Shelby called. Spinarak shot those white needles out of its mouth once more. They repeatedly hit the Machop until it was crouched on one knee. Shelby then saw what she had missed—the Machop had gotten poisoned from the previous attack and its health was dwindling. "Use one more poison sting!" Shelby said. Spinarak continued with the attack, looking a little bit more confident in itself. Suddenly, Machop went down. The poison sting attacks (well, and the poison that was working its way through the Machop's system) had finally resulted in a fainted Pokémon.

"Spinarak!" Shelby heard Spinarak call happily. She grinned at her Pokémon and then recalled it back into its pokeball. The other Machop eyed Shelby wearily. Shelby grabbed a berry that cured poison out of her backpack and set it next to the fainted Machop. She vaguely hoped its friends knew what to do as she began to walk away, Charmeleon still trotting along happily in front of her.

(OOC: Phew, finally got this up)

  • Chapter 1-4, Part 2: You can Fly?!

The "ninja" emerged, a vicious insect Pokemon with reverse-curved blades in place of hands. The scorch marks on it legs told Asher that it must have just lost a fight and was taking out its frustration on everything that crossed its path. The Scyther was blind with rage, there would be no reasoning with it... and with its speed and sharp blades, trying to run would be suicide.

Orion snapped his claws to remind the Scyther that he was outnumbered 3-to-1, but it had no effect. The Scyther took one threatening step towards Asher... and was promptly hit in the face with a well-aimed Sand Attack. The Scyther screamed in rage and tried to wipe the sand from its eyes, but with its lack of real hands, its attempts were in vain.

Orion laughed loudly; Sand Attack was quickly becoming his favorite technique, as it caused all sorts of fun mayhem without seriously injuring anyone.

If the Scyther was thinking rationally, it would have waited for its eyes to clear before attacking again. Instead, it began dashing and slashing around wildly, screaming angrily as it went. Orion wasn't an easy target, but with the impredictability of his opponent's moves, it wasn't long before he was hit with a Pursuit out of a blind spot. As soon as he had connected once, Scyther went berserk again, focusing its mad attacks on the last known position of its opponent. Orion scurried along the ground in an attempt to escape the threat, but by pure chance, the Scyther made an awkward turn and gashed Orion on the back.

Orion screeched and fired Poison Stings up at Scyther's face, but fell prey to a short-range Quick Attack that knocked him away a good distance. As soon as he was able to stand, Orion tried to repair his shell with Harden, but Scyther's vision had returned and it struck with another Quick Attack. It stood over its fallen enemy, and was ready to issue a lethal blow aimed at the head, but before it could even raise its blade Atlas appeared on the scene ramming the Scyther in the side and knocking it to the ground.

Atlas swung his horn around defensively before issuing his battle cry of "Hera, cru!" The Scyther screamed in response before dashing around Atlas and trying to strike with Pursuit. Atlas had been paying attention to its moves, and knew that it would try to strike from behind, so he successfully blocked the blade with his horn.

The failure of its opening attack only served to make Scyther angrier. It jumped back and tried to dash forward into a Quick Attack, but ran right into a high-powered Fury Attack. With so much forward momentum, the Scyther wasn't able to escape before suffering five sharp blows.

The Scyther never seemed to repeat the same movement more than twice, always adding some rage-induced twist that made it difficult to predict its attacks. It would veer off with Quick Attack and run right past Atlas, only to twist around and strike with an unexpected Pursuit. Atlas was doing much better in defending against attacks than Orion, who had already been recalled to his PokeBall, but this was only delaying the inevitable. Scyther never stayed in attacking range for long, always darting past and slashing every once in a while.

When Atlas realized this, he resolved to stop trying to block Scyther's attacks. He would just keep being ambushed 'till death if he didn't create an opening. When Scyther broke off from its safe orbit, Atlas lowered his horn and tripped Scyther as it passed with a Quick Attack. Besides immediately shattering its ankle, the Scyther flew forward, rolling headfirst through the brush and glancing off of a tree.

Atlas' shell split, and a set of fine wings appeared. Flapping in typical insect fashion, he hovered up at treetop level. If there ever was a good time to use his secret technique, it was now. Using instincts that could never really be expressed in human language, he carefully calculated his height above the ground and angle of descent. Meanwhile, back on the ground, the Scyther was standing using one of its long blades as a support; seeing that Heracross had taken to the air, it readied itself to launch an aerial Quick Attack. Its wings revved up like an engine, and it slowly rose up off the ground, but with one wing sprained from crashing into the tree, it wasn't able to go very high.

Atlas dived, only pulling up at the last possible second with its belly grazing the tips of the grass. It zoomed along the ground, slowly rising to meet the Scyther who was rocketing forward at ridiculous speed in a desperate Quick Attack.

The two Pokemon collided with force that made the leaves on the trees tremble, and they hung in the air for a brief eternity before falling to the ground. Although it took some time to recover from the impact, Atlas soon rose, smiling widely with pride. A precise Aerial Ace to the thorax had temporarily stopped Scyther's heart, sending it into a deep unconsciousness.

Atlas raised his arms and shouted, "Hera, cru!" He looked over at Asher, who was watching the battle intently. Remembering his manners, he bowed his head to his instructor, who bowed back. Atlas was very pleased with himself, as this was the first time that he was able to apply the things he had been taught in a serious combat situation.

Asher was less interested in the victory, and more focused on Atlas' new technique. All he could say was, "You can fly?"

  • The ball slowed to a stop, confirming the catch. I ran over to pick up the ball, excited that I caught it. I began to release Poochyena, but stopped when I remembered the Vulpix. I walked towards it and crouched down to get at a nice level with it. It looked at me with uncertainty, wondering what I would do.

"You alright?" I asked it smiling.

"Vulpix!" It said cheerfully. It got up and turned around running into the grass. Just like that? I thought to myself as I watched it run off. I stood up and looked towards Starly and Totodile. They were both happily chatting with each other. Maybe they will get along better than I thought.

"So, you guys ready to get better acquainted with Poochyena?" They both turned towards me, Totodile had anger in his eyes, Starlys were happier. Simultaneously they chanted their names and then looked at each other with astonishment. They began to bicker with each other, getting louder as it progressed. I let out a disappointed sigh, why did everything have to end up in a fight? I pressed the button on the PokeBall letting out a flash of white light that faded out, revealing Poochyena. This distracted Totodile and Starly as they looked toward him. Poochyena let out a low growl as Starly approached him.

"Starly Starly," she said greeting Poochyena.

"Poochy," he said turning his head away from Starly dismissively.

"Star!" She said stepping back surprised. Totodile laughed at Starly, enjoying the scene. Starly turned around and began to yell at Totodile. Poochyena lay down to watch the action. This is horrible, I thought, why do they have to act this way? I'm going to have to find out how to get these guys together.

"Poochy! Poochyena!" He said to both of them. They turned towards him with some confusion. "Poochy!" He went on almost lecturing them. After a few moments of Poochyenas' lecturing Totodile and Starly calmed down and sat down, finding nothing to do. Relief went at me like a flood. Now we could continue on with our journey. Starly perched herself back on my head and Poochyena walked a little ways behind us while Totodile took his position beside me.

We walked for hour across the seemingly never ending valley. We then rested and had a snack before we set off again. It began to get dark; we had to rest soon. I felt tired after a while and I got lost in my thoughts. As I was walking I tripped on a rock buried in the ground, causing Starly to fly off while I fell forward and landed on something soft. I looked down and saw a Doduo underneath me. It jumped up knocking me off and onto the ground and onto my back.

"Duo!" It called out. Two more Doduo popped up from the grass in response. The three Doduo looked towards us angrily. "Duo!" They all screamed as they advanced on us with amazing speed. Totodile and Starly rushed towards the two Doduo; Poochyena just lay down in the back and watched everything unfold. The Doduo closest to me began to peck at my legs. I tried to back away but the Doduo only needed to take a step to catch up. Every peck caused great amounts of pain to flow through my body. I had to get out of there if I didn't want to sustain bad injuries. How am I supposed to get out of this? I looked towards Poochyena, Why isn't he doing anything? Without thinking I quickly rolled onto my back. Not my best idea. The Doduo now had on head pecking me in the back and one pecking my in my head. I was getting a headache and the pain in my back was terrible. I jumped up, startling the Doduo momentarily, and ran as fast as I could. Recovering, the Doduo chased after me as if it hadn't eaten for days. I don't know how, and I don't know why, but I, somehow, was running faster than the Doduo. Maybe it was the fear of being attack again. Whatever the reason, I wasn't going to ask questions. The Doduo was just inches behind me, if I were to slow down for even a second I would be toast. I ran around and wide circles, I don't think I could keep this up. I looked over at Poochyena. There was sleep in his eyes as he lazily sat there and watched us.

"Poochyena! Why aren't you doing anything?!" I yelled to him. He slowly turned his head towards me and let out a huge yawn. I tripped on a rock while I was distracted by Poochyena. I was trampled by the Doduo, causing it to stumble. I lifted my head up, almost in a daze. After a few seconds I came up with a plan. If Poochyena wouldn't do anything then I would just have to do it myself. I stood up, ran over, and jumped on the Doduos back. It collapsed under my weight, but then stood up and began running around franticly trying to throw me off. I realized that this may have been the most idiotic thing I have ever done. I was thrown around, left and right, it was beginning to get me dizzy. I was thrown off the Dodos back and into the ground. This made me really dizzy and confused, I couldn't even think straight. The Doduo walked towards me slowly. When it reached me it slowly pulled back its heads to get ready for another peck. I'm not sure what happened next but the Doduo began to cry out and toss itself around. I looked up and saw Poochyena clamped on the Dodos neck, holding on with all his might as he was tossed around. Finally Poochyena was thrown off Dodos neck, and let out a loud whimper as he hit the ground. Now focused on him, the Doduo ran towards Poochyena furiously and began to peck him. Whimpers escaped from Poochyenas lungs with every hit that contacted him. I watched as the Doduo pecked him almost to death. I was immobile and couldn't do a thing to help. Seemingly out of nowhere Starly flew into the scene and tackled the Doduo off Poochyena. The Doduo was thrown a few feet away and let out a cry as it dragged on the ground. Starly landed next to Poochyena to check if he had any serious injuries. Poochyena growled and snapped at Starly when she got close to him, and she let out a cry of surprise. Starly began to chirp in argument as Poochyena rose to his feet. Poochyena looked towards Starly and growled at her, cutting her short, he then barked commands to her and ran off towards the other Doduo, jumping off the one that was previously attacking them. Starly flew after Poochyena in a hast as they went off to assist Totodile. Totodile scratched the Doduo in the chest, injuring it greatly. Another Doduo came from behind Totodile and tackled Totodile in one swift movement. The Doduo stood above Totodile and readied themselves for a peck. Suddenly Poochyena jumped up onto one of the Doduos back and jumped again to clamp onto the Doduos neck. The Doduo franticly threw itself around, knocking over the one standing next to it. Starly landed next to Totodile to help him up and chirped to Totodile, probably telling him what Poochyena told her. Starly flew over to help Poochyena with Totodile behind. When the Doduo recovered Poochyena ran around them barking, herding them together. Starly pumped her wings forcing dirt into the air, then she moved to the opposite side and pumped her wings again. She then circled the dust cloud in an effort to keep it all in a tight ball. Totodile ran up, and extending his claws, disappearing into the dust ball and slashed at the Doduo. Squawks of pain rose from the cloud of dirt as Totodile attacked them. Starly then flew in tackling them over and over again, she was then followed by Poochyena who disappeared into the dirt cloud behind them. The shrieks of pain grew louder as it went on. Soon the two Doduo ran out of the dust cloud and into the distance. Poochyena chased after the Doduo, determined to finish the job. Starly cut Poochyena off a pushed him away. Angry, Poochyena turned around and ran towards the last Doduo. He lunged forward and bit the Doduo in its leg waking it up. The Doduo looked around and saw its companions running in the distance. It ran towards them as fast as it could in an effort to catch up to them.

Totodile ran up to me hastily. He bent down and sniffed me in the head. He took out his hand and tapped me on the head.

"Totodile?" He asked. I raised my head and rested it in the palm of my hand.

"I think it's time for a rest, Totodile," he looked at me with a confused look. I chuckled and rolled over on my back before closing my eyes and drifting off to sleep.

    Part 4

I felt a cold breeze as I drowsily woke up. It was early morning, and the sun hadn't fully risen over the horizon. I let out a yawn as I began to get up, but cringed when I felt the aces of the previous day. I looked around and saw Starly sleeping on a nearby log, and Poochyena a few ways off curled in a tight ball with his nose neatly tucked under his feet. I looked to my side and found Totodile sleeping by my side. I stood up and worked out my arms and legs; hoping to dull the pain. I reached into my backpack and took out my binoculars to see if I could get an estimate of how far I had to go. In the distance I saw many trees that were closely packed together; it seemed as if I had a long way to go. I sighed, How am I supposed to find my way through that? I thought sadly.

"Totodile…?" I looked down and saw Totodile wiping the sleep from his eyes. His opened his mouth and let out a huge yawn, and looked up for an explanation for what I was doing.

"Hey, Totodile. Since you're awake, can you wake up everyone else?"

"Dile Dile…" he said sleepily. Totodile walked over to Starly and tapped her on the head.

"Star?" She said as she gently aroused from sleep. Totodile walked over to Poochyena, and patted him on the head. Poochyena looked up at him, and then put his head back down. Totodile tapped him on his head harder, trying to get him to get up. Poochyena growled at Totodile and closed his eyes, showing that he wasn't ready to get up. Totodile yelled his name to Poochyena. Poochyena threw up his head quickly, and growled at Totodile. Based on the reaction I guessed it was an insult. Poochyena jumped up, and barked at Totodile. Totodile grunted and walked away from Poochyena, not wanting to get into a fight this early in the morning. Poochyena barked after Totodile as he walked away; growling and baring his teeth at him.

"Let's go guys. We should leave now if we want to get deep into the woods before nightfall."

"Totodile," Totodile replied rubbing his stomach, he must've been hungry.

"Can't you wait until we get into the forest before we eat?"

    "Totodile Totodile," he wined.

    "Fine we can eat now."

"Toto Totodile!" He chanted with excitement. I reached into my bag and took out a can of beans, along with some berries. I really need to get some Pokemon Food, I thought sadly. I gave four berries to Starly and Totodile, and they ate it cheerfully. I walked over to Poochyena, and handed him some berries. He sniffed at them, took a bite, and then spat them out. He must not like berries too much, I mused.

"Poochy," he said and walked away from me. As he walked I noticed that he had an injury in his left hind-leg, and had a slight limp. He probably got it when he was fighting with the Doduo.

"Poochyena," he looked back at me, "Come here for a sec, I want to see your leg," he walked over to me, curious. I examined him, and noticed that he had a deep cut in his leg. It was cleaned out thoroughly; he must have cleaned it over night. By the looks of it I could tell that it would leave a scar when it healed. I took out a potion and sprayed it on his leg to help speed up the healing process. Feeling the sting Poochyena quickly turned around and growled at me, showing he didn't want my help. He then turned around, and stalked away. I let out a long sigh, and stood up. What am I supposed to do now? I mused I can't just let him go around with a wound like that, and if I try to hold him down and could make it worse. Not to mention that, well, whatever trust he has in me, will go away. What am I supposed to do? Until I figure it out we'll have to keep on moving. I just need to keep a close eye on him. "Okay guys, let's go," Starly flew up, landed on my head, and closed her eyes drifting back into sleep. I chuckled a little, and walked onward with Totodile and Poochyena walking behind.

The sun had fully gone up by the time we arrived at the forest, making the air much warmer than it was earlier. I stood at the edge of the forest, and stared into it. There was a dirt path that moved into the forest that made it, luckily for me, easier to get through. I felt Starly stir on my head, waking up.

"Star…" I heard her say. She flapped her wings to wake herself up, and flew off my head into the sky and flew in circles. I took off my book bag and dug inside it, looking for my map. I took it out. Looking at it I could see that the forest before me was called the Forgotten Forest. I thought about why they called it that, and just figured it was because it was rarely visited. I looked into the air and saw Starly hovering in the sky. I figured she was just looking at something. She quickly folded her wings tightly to her sides, and made a nose dive into a nearby tree. The tree rustled, and then suddenly stopped. It was still for countless moments before Starly flew out followed by a Gliscor close behind. Starly and the Gliscor flew down, and landed on the ground next to us. "Starly! Starly!" Starly told us proudly. I really didn't get what she was saying, but I smiled with gratitude anyways. Totodile walked over and greeted the Gliscor happily. Poochyena walked up to Totodile, and said something to him. I didn't know what since most of the things he said was usually just made up of the word "Poochy," but whatever it was it wasn't anything too nice because Totodile shot back something angrily, but Poochyena just brushed it off and turned towards the Gliscor. Poochyena barked something at the Gliscor, and it nonchalantly replied back. Poochyena was taken back, but then growled at it, and barked again. Once again the Gliscor sent back a reply. Poochyena ran towards the Gliscor, readying himself for a fight. I took out my PokeBall, and returned Poochyena in a flash of red light just before he came in contact with the Gliscor. I looked at the PokeBall, shook my head, and let out a sigh. Why Poochyena?

"Okay guys! Let's go!" I said enthusiastically, pointing at the woods. I looked over at the pokemon and saw them all looking at me with weird faces. "What?"

"Okay, let's have a rest here." We had been walking for quite some time thorough the forest, and my feet began to hurt. Starly flew off my head, and perched on a tree branch. Totodile laid down on his stomach, and let out a long breath. After I sat there for a few moments my stomach growled, telling me that I needed to eat. "Is anyone hungry?" Starly and Totodile quickly lifted up their heads, and chanted their names. When I looked at both of them something seemed wrong. 1..2, I counted in my head, something's missing. There's supposed to be three of them, right? So where's Poochyena? Just as I finished my sentence I remembered that I put Poochyena in his PokeBall. It had completely slipped my mind! I reached into my pocket, took out the PokeBall, and released Poochyena. When he appeared he shook his head, and sneezed before looking back up, and growling at me. "Ummm….are you hungry?" I said hoping that the situation would get better. Poochyena lifted up his ears quickly, and let out an eager bark. I guess that's a yes. Totodile walked up to us.

"Totodile," he said happily. He then marched off into the woods in search of food. Poochyena turned and went the other direction. Before I could say anything he disappeared into the woods. I guess he liked to find food for himself. I took out a can of beans, and opened it quickly with a can opener. As I ate I heard rustling behind me. I turned around and saw two little feet sticking out of my backpack. It stood up slowly, it was a Venonat. In its hands was a PokeBall. It brought it up to its mouth and bit into it, causing red light to escape from it, making the Venonat disappear from site.
    "Star?"
