Cat Dog, feel free to lock if you see problems....
Also, yes, I did just write a blog on exactly this, but in a thread it may warrant more responses...

Everyone in their life has had at least one song that they love the sound of.... Not the lyrics or anything like that.... But then when you start paying attention to something other than the beat, or the instruments or the mood the song misleadingly gives.... The first thing you think is "WHY THE HALIBUT DID I LIKE THIS SONG?!"

An example for me would be "Forgive me love". It's the bonus track from Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill album. I never paid much attention to the lyrics... Which is weird, because it's only her singing you hear. No instruments or anything like that... I never really payed attention to what she sang, just like the mood it gave the song.... Well, Lemme post the song, and do your best to NOT PAY ATTENTION to what she is actually saying. Try and feel the mood.

    Spoiler:

Now, regardless of if you succeeded in not actually listening to her.... Here are the lyrics....

    Spoiler:

Yeah. She went into this guy's house while he wasn't there (why the door was unlocked... I'll never know) and went all stalker-licious, and realized he moved on from her and.... yeah.... It took me many years to pay attention... Though once I did it wasn't exactly pleasant...

So, do any of you have songs like this? Where you like them until you pay attention?

Oh my... Gosh... What the... That's freaking creepy >< I mean, I suppose if the letter had been to/from her it'd be slightyl romantic (but still f'in creepy), but oh gosh... o.o

I had a similar thing with two songs. I used to love Many Of Horror by Biffy Clyro, it's got good music and his voice is great in it making it sound all romantic, but then when I actually read the lyrics it turns out its all about domestic abuse! Infact, it's the same case with Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley now that I think about it o.o The other one is A Team by Ed Sheeran, I liked it mainly for the guitar, I don't care much for his voice, but it turns out that song is about a prostitute getting money for drugs. Really can be surprising when you've been singing along to the song for years and it turns out that THAT is what you've been singing!

PS: Would you forgive me love if I lied in your bed? ;o <3

    (so did not CP this)

  • The thread's fine Lacreya... I mean Kirozane! It's a perfect fit for C&M.

I've just come across an example of this fairly recently. An episode of the TV series Community heavily featured the song 'Kiss From a Rose' by Seal. I could remember the song vividly from the '90s, but never really paid attention to the lyrics, until now! I suppose it sort of makes sense in a poetic way, but thinking about it literally just makes my head spin. Combined with the fact that it was a phenomenally successful song makes me think that I wasn't the only one not paying attention to the lyrics!

There are a lot of songs from the 90's like that.... If I am allowed, as this actually pertains to the topic... This guy actually points this out too inthe latter half.

Oh my god Kiro. That's the first time in a while that I've laughed out loud at something I've seen on the internet...

I feel like there was a similar thread to this a while back and I'll repeat what I said there. I loved the song Don't Stand So Close to Me as a kid. I don't know why, I just did. And then I started listening to the lyrics when I grew up. Let's just take the first verse.

    Spoiler:

I think you get the idea of what it's about just from that.

    Wow...
That Alanis Morissette song is good. And it's fiction, it didn't really happen.

Don't Stand So Close To Me has good lyrics as well; far better than the 'play it safe' (lol) unrequited love song; make it about a school girl!

    Controversial lyrics improves a song...
Here's one you guys might like!

When I was 13-15 I was obsessed with System of a Down, Slipknot, Linkin Park, and others of that ilk. Listening to it now, the stuff is so musically one-dimensional, trivial, and utterly uninspiring - I'm embarrassed almost a decade later to have enjoyed it so much back then.

let's just say if i had a 13 year old daughter and i found that CD in her room, i'd feel really, really weird o___o; table for two, that song especially, lmao. i used to skip over the moaning part thinking it was annoying.

MILF by Chunk! No, Captain Chunk.

I was listening to it for awhile and thought it sounded alright, then I heard a key word from that song and instantly my attention was brought to the lyrics and only the lyrics. It went from amusing poppy post-hardcore to very creepy instantly. It's not a bad song, but the lyrics are just creepy to me... instantly deleted the song from my library. I'll pretend it doesn't exist. :P

Linkin park, for me. Seriously, how did I like that?

As for the lyrics thing. It happened to me with Pearl jam's Jeremy.

  • I use to like a whole lot of pop punk music in Year Seven which I can't stand now. I liked a lot of lame grunge and hair metal in year eight that I don't like now. There are also a whole lot of mediocre indie bands that I liked throughout Year Ten through to now (eg. Lykke Li).

My music taste changes over time. I use to pride myself on the fact that I could listen to both indie/hipster music and not succumb to hating early AC/DC (Bon Scott era) like everyone else. In the past few months I've realised I just don't enjoy the album Highway to Hell anymore, so yeah.
